BDFlag Just in : Bangladesh donot need to play Qualifier ! 14 teams will play in 2015 WC

Associates included in 2015 World Cup

Sharda Ugra in Hong Kong
June 28, 2011

The 2015 World Cup will comprise 14 teams, a change from the original ten-team format, which means the Associates are back in the competition, ESPNcricinfo has learned. Four Associate teams will line up alongside ten Full Members in Australia and New Zealand, just like it was during the 2011 World Cup. The decision to reinstate the Associates, which was taken on the third day of the ICC's annual conference in Hong Kong, is a reversal of the ICC's heavily-criticised move to restrict the 2015 tournament to the Full Members.

On Monday, the second day of the conference, the ICC's chief executives' committee (CEC) had recommended to the executive board that there be a qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup, giving the Associates hope. It did not specify the number of slots open to Associates though, nor did it recommend a change in the competition's format. The executive board acted on the CEC's recommendation and ensured Associate participation by expanding the tournament from 10 to 14 teams.
As earlier reported, some Members believe the stretch to 14 teams is part of a deal to build support for the last major issue for discussion at the conference: scrapping the rotation policy for the appointment of the ICC president.

Pakistan and Bangladesh - the two Members who were to nominate the next candidates for president and vice-president by the rotation system - are opposed to the change. In order to pass a resolution amending the rule about the appointment of the ICC chief, eight of ten Full Members and 38 of 50 Associates will have to vote in favour of the motion. That vote could now be a formality with the Associates being placated by Tuesday's decision.
More to follow ...

They always knew it would be a 12/14 team format tournament.

The whole fiasco of 10 team was to keep the associates/lower ranked members busy while they finalise the FTP in their favour.

This way, everybody is happy.
ICC wins.

The top teams got what they wanted.
The bottom ranked teams thinking atleast we got some game plus direct world cup entry.
The associates thinking hurray!! we are in too.

Well played ICC.
One Big Happy Family.

Oh, did I mention they also managed to scrap the rotation policy in the process ?? By securing the associates votes in return of their place in the world cup !!!

Yay! The best thing about this is getting to watch Ten Doeschate play
The reason for letting them play was to get the associate and affiliate vote to end the rotation policy.
BCB are actually opposing it, so good.

However, in 2019 WC- only 10 teams. First 8 ranked teams are automatic qualifier and 2 will fight with the associates.

Game is on for Bangladesh to go up the ladder pass WI/NZ (whichever come first) and stay out of relegation zone.

Why do some people want 12 teams? Ya I know it does get boring but to globalize the game, we need as many teams involved possible. Do you see every country in soccer performing very well? A lot of those teams barely make a difference. Also if you guys don't know, the upcoming rugby world cup has 20 teams competing. And in rugby there are significant differences in team's qualities like cricket. Some of those aren't gonna compete in even 1 game. Does that stop them though? Nope. Honestly we should put the format back to what it was in 2007 WC. I don't know what was so wrong about that format.

World cup 2007 format was very good(IMO) but in that tournament India failed to go second round and it made huge loss for ICC. So India and ICC don't want that format as a result now it has been changed.

2019 would be funny. The world power can switch so much in 8 years that big fan base teams like India or Pakistan can actually miss out. Wouldn't that be funny (and a slap on the face for ICC).

wait till Tendulkar retires. India might have to play qualifier ..

We do not need to worry about 2019 coz by then we'll be #7 in the ranking inshallah....

I would love that; specially India and England, I will be so happy.

I bet you, they (ICC) will quickly scrap it off before the event or find something to include them.

i hope the BCB official brought his KY jelly for this meeting...can't imagine a bigger case of ______

FTP - BD gets screwed
rotation policy - BD gets screwed
2019 WC - BD gets insulted [we might improve enough to be out of the bottom 2, but this was directed at us]

I do not understand euphoria about not being in the qualifier! In prionciple, I do no not mind the qualifier. We must and will qualify should it happen. Howerver, the disturbing part is the indignity of having to play qualifier with the just two of the test teams included. I would have no problem if it involved two or more T10 teams (excluding BD and ZW). In other words, I am afraid that we are losing sight of the bigger picture here. One of this is that we do not have the confidence that we can beat likes of Ireland and Afghanistan with our academy team (like India is doing to WI at the moment). Second is that BCB is a collection of nincompoops who at the best have no negotiating skills and, at worse, are on the take.
