আনন্দময় সেই স্মৃতি




১৪ এপ্রিল, ১৯৯৭। দেশজুড়ে চলছে বাংলা বর্ষবরণের উত্সব। কিন্তু বর্ষবরণের উত্সব ছাপিয়ে সেদিন ঢাকার মানুষ পালন করেছিল অন্য রকম এক বিজয়োত্সব। এ দেশের ক্রিকেটকে অন্য উচ্চতায় নিয়ে যাওয়ার উত্সব। পয়লা বৈশাখের উত্সব মিলে-মিশে একাকার হয়েছিল দেশের ক্রিকেট বীরদের বরণ করে নেওয়ার আনন্দের সঙ্গে। আইসিসি ট্রফি চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয়ে বিশ্বকাপে জায়গা করে নিয়ে ১৯৯৭ সালের এই নববর্ষের দিনই দেশের মাটিতে পা রেখেছিলেন আকরাম-মিনহাজুল-আমিনুল-এনামুল-আতাহার-নাঈমুর-রফিক-সাইফুল-খালেদ মাসুদরা। এক ক্যারিবীয় গর্ডন গ্রিনিজ সেদিন সিক্ত হয়েছিলেন এ দেশের লাখো-কোটি মানুষের ভালোবাসায়। মানিক মিয়া এভিনিউয়ের বিশাল চত্বরে লাখো মানুষের সামনে রাষ্ট্রীয় সম্মানে সম্মানিত করা হয়েছিল সেই সময় পর্যন্ত এ দেশের খেলাধুলার ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে বড় সাফল্যের নায়কদের। সারা দেশ ভেসেছিল এক অন্য রকম আনন্দে। অন্য রকম উন্মাদনায়।

১৯৯৭ থেকে ২০১২। একেক করে কেটে গেল ১৫টি বছর। এই কেটে যাওয়া ১৫ বছরে বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেট এমন উচ্চতায় চলে গেছে যে অনেকেরই হয়তো ’৯৭ সালের সেই আনন্দময় দিনটির কথা মনে নেই। মনে নেই সেদিন আনন্দের আতিশয্যে বাড়ির অসম্ভব গম্ভীর, আপাত নিরাবেগ মানুষটিও নীরবে, গোপনে চোখের পানি ফেলেছিলেন। হয়তো অনেকেরই মনে নেই, সেদিন পুরো দেশের মানুষ বিহ্বল হয়েছিল অনেক না পাওয়ার মাঝে, হঠাত্ অনেক বড় কিছু পেয়ে যাওয়ার আনন্দে। আজকের প্রজন্মের কাছে বাহুল্য মনে হতে পারে। কিন্তু, সেদিন আইসিসি ট্রফির ফাইনালে কেনিয়াকে হারিয়ে দেওয়ার সেই আনন্দ অনেকের কাছেই তুলনাহীন। পরের সময়গুলোতে বাংলাদেশ টেস্ট মর্যাদা পেয়েছে, টেস্ট জিতেছে, একাধিকবার হারিয়েছে বিশ্বের শীর্ষ সব ক্রিকেট দলকেই, বিশ্বকাপে খেলে জায়গা করে নিয়েছে দ্বিতীয় রাউন্ডে। কিন্তু আইসিসি ট্রফি জয়ের সেই আনন্দ, সেই অনুভূতি আর কখনোই দেখেনি এ দেশের মানুষ। সত্যিই অন্য রকম একটা সময় ছিল সেটি। প্রথমবারের মতো পুরো জাতিকে এক সুতোয় গেঁথেছিল আইসিসি ট্রফি জয়ের সেই মুহূর্ত.
রাজনৈতিকভাবে বিভক্ত একটি জাতি সেদিন খুঁজে পেয়েছিল ঐক্যের পথ। সেদিনই এ দেশের মানুষ আবেগের বন্ধনে আবদ্ধ করেছিল ক্রিকেটকে। সেই আবেগ আর কখনোই আলগা হতে দেয়নি বাংলাদেশের মানুষ।

আজ ক্রিকেট যে পর্যায়ে রয়েছে, তাতে পেছনে ফিরে তাকাতে যে কারেরই ভালো লাগবে। কী অসাধারণ আবেগময় দিনগুলো ছিল। আইসিসি ট্রফির গ্রুপ পর্যায়ের প্রতিটি ম্যাচে জিতেই নিজেদের বিশ্বকাপের জন্য ফেবারিট প্রমাণ করেছিল বাংলাদেশ। দ্বিতীয় রাউন্ডেও হংকংকে হারিয়ে সেই ধারা অব্যাহত রাখে বাংলাদেশ। বিপত্তিটা বাধে আয়ারল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে দ্বিতীয় রাউন্ডের দ্বিতীয় ম্যাচটি বৃষ্টিতে পরিত্যক্ত হলে। সেই ম্যাচে পয়েন্ট ভাগাভাগি হয়ে যাওয়ায় নেট রানরেটে কিছুটা পিছিয়ে থাকা বাংলাদেশের জন্য হল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে তৃতীয় ম্যাচটি হয়ে যায় ডু অর ডাই। চরম উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ সেই ম্যাচ ভুলে যেতে পারেন না কেউই। ভুলতে পারেন না সেই ম্যাচে বাংলাদেশের জয়ের নায়ক আকরাম খানকে। কঠিন এক পরিস্থিতিতে তাঁর ব্যাট থেকে বেরিয়ে আসা ৬৭ রানের এক ইনিংস এক লাফেই ঢুকে পড়ে বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেট ইতিহাসের। আজ ক্রিকেটের যে ঐশ্বর্য, যে ডামাডোল, সাফল্যের যে বর্ণচ্ছটা, তার সবেরই মূলে ছিল আকরামের সেই অনবদ্য ইনিংস। হল্যান্ডকে হারিয়ে সেমিফাইনালে উঠে যাওয়া বাংলাদেশ এর কয়েক দিন পরেই সেমিতে স্কটল্যান্ডকে সহজেই হারিয়ে কোয়ালিফাই করে বিশ্বকাপের আসরে। আর বৃষ্টি বিঘ্নিত ফাইনালে ডাকওয়ার্থ লুইস পদ্ধতিতে কেনিয়াকে হারিয়ে নাম লেখায় টেস্ট না খেলা দেশগুলোর বিশ্বকাপ-খ্যাত আইসিসি ট্রফির রোল অব অনারে। এরপর বিশ্বকাপ খেলা, বিশ্বকাপে গিয়েই পাকিস্তানকে হারানো, টেস্ট মর্যাদা পাওয়া—এগুলোতে এসেছে সেই সাফল্যেরই ধারাবাহিকতায়।

কিছুদিন আগেই এশিয়া কাপ জিততে গিয়েও জেতেনি বাংলাদেশ। ফাইনালে পাকিস্তানের কাছে ২ রানে হেরে গিয়ে ছুঁতে পারেনি মর্যাদার শিরোপা। কিন্তু ভারত ও শ্রীলঙ্কাকে হারিয়ে বাংলাদেশ প্রমাণ করে দিয়েছে আভিজাত্যের পথেই রয়েছে এ দেশের ক্রিকেট। অস্ট্রেলিয়া, ইংল্যান্ড, দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা, নিউজিল্যান্ড, ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ—সব দেশই অন্তত একবার করে হলেও মাথা নুইয়েছে বাংলাদেশের সামনে। ১৫ বছর আগের প্রেক্ষাপট বিবেচনা করলে তা একেবারেই কম কিছু নয়। এ দেশের ক্রিকেটাররা এখন উইজডেনের সেরা হন, বিশ্ব র্যাঙ্কিংয়ের শীর্ষ স্থানে থাকেন অহরহই। মোটকথা বাংলাদেশকে দুর্বল, শক্তিহীন বলে তাচ্ছিল্য করার ধৃষ্টতা বলতে গেলে কারোরই নেই। বাকি কেবল টেস্ট ক্রিকেটে একটি শক্তি হিসেবে নিজেদের প্রমাণ করা। সে ব্যাপারটিও যে খুব দূরে নেই—তা বোধ করি বলে দেওয়াই যায়।

১৫ বছর আগের সেই আনন্দের দিনটি এসেছিল এই নববর্ষেই। আজ আরেক নববর্ষে দাঁড়িয়ে সেই আনন্দের স্মৃতি মনে করে শপথ হোক এগিয়ে চলার। বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটকে আরও অনেক দূর এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়ার।

The forgotten anniversary

"Oh was it today? I actually forgot all about it," said Khaled Mashud who was taken aback by the question: "So, do you have any special plans for today [Friday], the 15th anniversary of the ICC Trophy win?"

The match -- Bangladesh versus Kenya in Kuala Lumpur -- actually began on April 12 but due to persistent rain, a Malaysian speciality at all times of the year, the umpires decided to take the Bangladesh innings, after Kenya had made 241-7 in 50 overs, into the reserve day with Bangladesh needing 166 runs in 25 overs. So it transpired that it was on April 13, 1997 that Bangladesh played out their (at the time) greatest sporting moment.

Surprisingly, it was skipped over by many. Is it because there have been much bigger moments in Bangladesh cricket? It is for many, especially if one considers the standard of cricket that is being played by the national cricketers now. The first triumph, however, holds a special place for everyone.

After recovering slightly from the surprise of overlooking such a momentous occasion, Mashud said that it was a special group that won that day.

"It was the best moment for me, certainly. It was the best team combination at the time and we had great teammates," said the former national captain.

"We have all remained friends. Obviously those who are still related to cricket are people who we see regularly but even those who are not within the circuit, I stay in touch with them," he added.

Mashud also remembered another man who had a huge role to play in Bangladesh's ascent into the 1999 World Cup, the primary destination after the ICC Trophy win.

"The last time I met Gordon Greenidge was probably a long time ago, but he certainly was a man who had a huge influence in our cricket," he said.

"Above all else, Gordon was a good human being. I think the only regret is the manner of his exit in 1999. We should have given him more respect," he added.

The single memory that Mashud carries to this day is the six he hit off Martin Suji in the final over. "Nobody would let me forget that six, everyone wants to know about that six," he said.

Mashud however rued the lapse. "If only I remembered it two days ago, we could have held a nice get-together."

Totally forgot. Indeed, that was the most memorable day of our cricket till today. I remember, even Asia cup final or NZ white wash wasn't that much exciting..... Will remain to be the most memorable for a long time for me....
