Planning A New Dhaka
Here's an interesting broad plan of forming a new Dhaka City...a better livable, environment friendly capital city.

রাজা (সরকার) আসে রাজা (সরকার) যায়,
পাখিদের (জনগন) তাতে কিছু যায় আসে না।

Dhaka City needs to expanded for it to be livable. It is way too congested. With the development of Purbachol and other parts of Uttara the expansion process has already begun. In a few years time the Dhaka we know today will be "Old Dhaka."
Other cities need to be developed so that people stop migrating to Dhaka.

One of the things that often disturbed me is no greenary is left. The lakes which had (very few to begin with) most of them went to high official housing projects. Now what is the way out of this?
1. The suggestion I have is remove the (Old airport) Airforce base from the middle of the town. Make Jessore a better base. The land and runways can be utilized on ONLY park, connecting roads, lake and greenary. May be traffic will ease up a little bit as well.
2. We have to move the train lines which runs through the city. That is what is holding up the traffic in many stoppages. The train line itself can be converted as a link road. There is also a semi unloading area in the industrial area (tejga) where the railroad runs in between mohakhali and mogbazar. That can be converted as bus stands for people.
3. An outer ring or by-pass road around the city. This can also have monorail attached to the road.
All these projects are expensive but essential. Otherwise 20 years we can't live in this city. Our children will blame us.

1.Move out every single resident of Dhaka.
2. Demolish the city.
3. Rebuild it. Better planning this time

Since that's infeasible, there's really no hope for this city.

Yup.Things are only gonna get worse for this city till it just implodes.
All these plans are great and what not. But i dont see any of them making any drastic changes.

I really like the idea of building an alternative train line and convert the existing train line within Dhaka city as some kind of an expressway. There are plenty of good ideas, but there is very little action

What are the main reasons behind Dhaka's present traffic mess:
1) Rail lines criss crossing the city, as Tiger Eye pointed out
2) Lack of enough east-west express roads
3) Too many people and vehicles crammed in too small an area...
It could have been worse though if our inter city terminals were not located in the suburbs of Gabtoli/Saidabad....
Many 3rd world cities have a traffic mess because their man bus stations are in the city center, we have a mess inspite of the fact that our bus terminals are far from the city centre

Unless population goes down the city let alone the country has no future.
For a country like Bangladesh, the population shouldn't be any more than 5 million. And we got like 150 million plus.

Certain things in Dhaka should be outsourced to Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna and other cities to ease the burden on the capital.

BK, I have to say it to you:
"Population is Bad" is a western propaganda. The west has deep problems with keeping the population levels up. This is one reason the USA has a homogenized immigration policy. Without the immigration, USA population would also be on a decline as Europe.
There are many countries in Africa with plenty of natural resources with very low population. Their hope of ever prospering is close to zero. Bangladesh is the 8th largest country in the world. Our rate of growth is high and will reach fever pitch in the next two decade. Bangladesh is also a model for LDCs to follow. Our population and the spirit of our people is a Mercy from Allah.
If it were not for this population, we would have been the next Sikkim of India a long time ago.

The Netherlands I think is a good example of a country that, albeit its relatively high population density of about 400 people per sq km (high compared to other developed nations), does well to cater to its people.
The term "overpopulated" in Economics is actually relative to a region's resources. You're not overpopulated if you have enough resources to sustain a high population. The absolute number of people is irrelevant.
