Feeling so sad for them. They were once a WC semi finalist team

I really liked Kenya. They were the 3rd major african team that the cricketing world desperately needed. They were the best associate team in the 90s and early part of 00s. Had Kenya been a full member, along with Ireland, Cricket would've been a world sport. I think it's safe to say that Kenyan Cricket is over!

Without Steve Tikolo, it is just another team.

I don't think they would have been able to do much even if they were given test status which they did deserve.

Kenya cricket is in a true downward spiral unlike WI, Zim or Lanka.

It was bound to happen. Kenya is a poor country and maybe didn't have enough fans. It's a failure of ICC too. They should have been awarded Test status after WC 2003 but ICC did least to help them.

Dude. You are implying that WI, Zim and SL are in a sort of downward spiral, right?

But SL just beat Bd, so what does that say about Bd? We too then should be in a sort of downward spiral. Do people STILL believe we are on the up? We are not on the up. Our core already peaked, they are on the decline. We need to find a couple more Shakibs, Tamims and the young Mashes, or we are done for. Circling the drain.

it was ICC's fault that kenya got lost from World Cricket. in a sport where teams are so little in number, losing kenya was a crime

After Kenya reached the semi-finals of the 03 world cup, they should've been given every support into developing their Cricket. Instead, what we saw was the exact opposite. They should've been given at least a dozen or so ODI games per annum. I'm surprised we didn't play them as much as we did against Zimbabwe back then. Kenya did have some really good players. Some were even better than the Zimbabwe players such as Steve Tikolo.

^He said true downward spiral, and then unlike. Meaning WI,Zim and SL were somewhat going down.

But anyway, as Brockely said I don't want this to be about Bd.

Yes, I am sad about Kenya. I wonder how history would have unfolded had we lost that final against them in 1997 ICC trophy ...oops, I am making it about Bd again..

Well, Kenya will be missed...I remember the likes of Tikolo, Odumbe and even Asif Karim?
But they still have their runners winning gold at the Olympics.

I actually like these divisions in Cricket. It will be even more better if they do this on a regular bases. I'm all for promoting teams to the top tier, and having full one-day status. Ideally, I would like to see 16 teams having full one-day status. Associates should regularly get at least 6 ODIs a year against any full member.

Kenya as a whole has so much potential. Use to be a great country for tourism until poor security got the better of things. Always wanted to go there. They're very strong when it comes to athletics. I'm a strong supporter of Kenya, and still remain hopeful that they will come back strong in the cricketing world though that looks extremely unlikely now.

People need to understand that Associates can't improve until they play big or main teams.

How can they make a leap to play big or main teams?

There has to be an intermediate stage where they play A Teams of big teams...

Do you want to see them getting destroyed at the main level?

Use some common sense.

What a shame! It's too bad Kenya never had a Mullah-like player on their side.

Well none of the FMs do anything like that. I remember when PNG got status, CA were saying that they will organize a series against them and guess what, not even a single series and they are playing in a grade cricket tournament in South Australia. They have hardly played any ODIs while they had ODI status and will 20% of the ODIs in WCQ.

Even Pak didn't organize any series or a match against UAE when they use our ground all the time (well I don't care about UAE at all). I hope if Nepal gets the status, They will be helped by India

This is why we need an intermediate stage desperately...

I almost 2003 wc games live on sky. Kenya were brilliant. 2003 wc in SA I have good memories off, it was the first wc I truly watched cricket with better understanding of the game than 1999.

Kenya reached semis. Looked a decent side. Who would’ve thought they’d be where they are now, back then.

Such a sad thing really.

True Aklemalp.
Its just ICC not organised.
They need to carry a big stick.
S Africa,Australia and India play A series against eachother every year, and play no one else except England.
Its just snobbery by the big 4,its all about cash.
The A series between those 3 get television coverage, and their is money in it.

More needs to be done in the development of the game.
Would love 2 see an A world cup or an under 25 world cup,2 develop the next tier of talent.

Lots of nice sentiments here but simply wrong information too.

While the ICC certainly have not been helpful, tbf to Kenya they were the best treated of any Associate side for many many years and deservedly so. They obtained "permanent" (lol) ODI status at one point, hosted a WC and a Champions Trophy and got some cricket vs proper teams, theyve played ODI's vs India and many other sides in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Kenyan cricket is in a heap because of Kenya. They were insanely fortunate Kenya in that they produced one sensationally good squad of cricketers most of whom came from the same couple of clubs and even families as they had many siblings etc in their sides.

The issue was bad administration. The funding they received instead of being invested in the grassroots and growing of cricket in Kenya was pumped into the senior mens team and admin, therefore instead of growing the roots and ensuring long term growth, they blew it all on the top and the roots withered and died, leading to the current situation.

I cant see Kenya ever recovering from its current position. The local interest in the game is dead, the admin poor, the players poor and the youth poor also, only making the U19 WC this time round as Namibia auto qualified. Its a sad example of how NOT to grow your sport locally.

Sides like Kenya do need games vs noteworthy sides of course for many reasons, attracting interest, money and so on, but more than that they need sensible administration and a base to work with. Kenya had none of the former and due to that the latter, which was already weak, has only weakened further.

Even now tbh they cant be too critical. They regularly play vs Zimbabwe A, perfect opposition really. Issue is as they did last month, they get absolutely hammered.

Just a sorry tale all round.

Gotta agree with Donal. Kenya were probably the poor man's Zimbabwe...ie not a long term viable cricketing nation. Heck, that might even be the case for New Zealand.

Kenya in 2003 only won 2 games against top 8 sides, IIRC. Bangladesh won as many from a similar # of matches in 2007. Kenya owe their semifinal spot in large part to walkovers from England not willing to play them in Nairobi.

Not trying to knock the achievement of an Associate winning 2 games, but its not as its made out to be when people say "Kenya made the semis" in other words making it seem like they were a top 4 ranked side at one time.
