I don't think it's a forced decision. Mahi has been dropping hints for a while that he no longer enjoys the longer version.

Whatever the reason, Indian cricket is saying goodbye to one of it's modern giants. Wicketkeeping-captaincy-batting all together (in every team he played for) was a tremendous workload and Dhoni managed it like no other. I'm certain if he gave up any one of these three, he could have played tests for another 4-5 years.

Looking forward to seeing a refreshed Dhoni in the ODIs.

Modern day giant he is for sure. Averaging close to 40 while keeping and captaining is no joke. Unfortunately for him and other keeper batsmen, Sanga has set the bar so high everybody expects the species to average 50+ these days. His replacement wicket keeper batsman will have a hard time filling in his shoes but I think he got the timing right. He's still a beast in limited over formats and not going anywhere anytime soon.

^I agree. However, the bar for wicketkeeper batsman has been set by the likes of Flower and Gilly long before Sanga.

Dhoni should've dropped the captaincy and stayed on as a WK batsman on the Test team imo. His averages might not be great but he's still the best WK batsman they have. I would understand if they had a young promising keeper on the sidelines but they really don't. Saha is 30 and Patel is 29 while Dhoni is 33. So he's not that much older.

Anyways, I respect his decision. He should be good for the next WC even. Good luck to him. I'm not a fan of India but have always liked Dhoni

I like him a lot as a player as well as a captain.. India gonna find it hard to replace him in Test..

So it will be Koheli, Dhoni was a good guy but not a good overseas Test captain I guess,

Sanju Samson is very very promising, they should pick him imo.

This is a cricket forum. We discuss every team. If you dont want to talk/read about Dhoni's retirement thats fine. Just ignore the thread and dont post in it.

Gilly and Sanga certainly set the bar high, I think in terms of consistence performance Dhoni lived up to that expectation. More so in the subcontinent than other continents. This decision is good for him but I cant see him playing for India in the shorter format after the wc. He will just keep playing in IPL in a year or two. India will quickly move toward younger wicket keepers in the shorter format. T20 WC will be right around the corner in 2016 and they will want to start preparing for that.

Dhoni wasn't much of a test player, will hardly be missed, but he's still a beast in LOIs..

Not good test player. But showed enormous mental strength though he didn't have technique to score big in tests outside India.

Great one day player, ok test player but got more matches due to being the best choice captain, with a new captain ready it's time to properly fill India's test keeper batsman role, I hope they go with a youngster for a long term choice, Sanju Samson the best candidate imo.

After Dhoni retirement...I can see only dark future for indians....without Dhoni I don't see hope ...especially his leading skills is marvelous...which India will miss it big time here....I'm already dreaming about beating India in june up coming test match in bd.

They have plenty of talent I think it's more to do with managing the personalities, I expect Kohli to become India's greatest test captain, reckon they'll start winning a lot more overseas during his tenure because they're in pretty good shape with himself, vijay and rahane and pujara should get it eventually as he has played some big innings outside of SC. Kohli will probably lead the fast bowlers better than dhoni did and that should help a lot.
