Good thread - the kind of stuff that I look forward to in the off season.

Three things:

1. Khaled Mahmud has an average of 14.36 after 77 odi's? What were we thinking?

2. Was Mashud a part of the 2007 squad? I wouldn't think so.

3. The 2003 squad seems to be the weakest, and I'm not just going by numbers here. We had quite a few nothing players in that team (whether they are "nothing" now is a different question). The 2003 looks a lot more packed with experience and more in-depth in all departments in comparison. The current one, of course, is the strongest, which makes it very disheartening to see them perform like they have done in Sri Lanka.

well hopefully all of the batsmen will be averaging over 30 if not very close to 30. the numbers roughly went from under 20 to mid 20s between WC 2003 and WC 2007 for the bastmen and allrounders (most of them) nafees and shakib have great averages but they've already dropped a bit since the WC especially shakibs average so maybe he should just focus on his batting for now because imo that's the most important atm. realistically if he can hold a batting average in the 40s and the others hold their current averages or improve on them then we should be able to open up a bowling spot for shahadat hossain in the one-day team, which would make a big difference in the bowling attack.

Good stats. ACtually looking at the batting averages of the BD squad, I always get confused who is the batsman and who is the bowler.

Hopefully, things have been changing in a positive direction after the arrival of some new players like SN, Mushfiq, Sakib, Aftab, Farhad. Statwise Tamim is still not upto his level; but hopefully he'll catch up.

What amazes me most is that we were actually allowed into the competition with a team like that.

Stats don't tell us the whole truth about a player's quality in terms of technique, luck or the cricket culture slash infrastructure he is a product of. That said, those numbers don't really lie either, and establish the real context for improvement. We need to improve a lot to do better than we ever have in 2011. Here are my expectations for the WC2011 XV and their batting averages, if we are to do better. I hope they have the opportunity to play enough matches to do this.

2. Junayed Siddique: ODI average- 35.00
3. Shahriar Nafees Ahmed: ODI and Test average- 35.00
4. Mohammad Ashraful Matin (C): ODI average- 35.00, Test average- 40.00
5. Alok Kapali: ODI and Test average- 35.00
6. Aftab Ahmed: ODI and Test average- 30.00
7. Mohammad Mushfiqur Rahim (WK): ODI average- 30.00, Test average- 40.00
8. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (VC): ODI and Test average- 25.00
9. Abdur Razzak: ODI average- 20.00
10. Kazi Shahadat Hossain: ODI and Test average- 15.00

I doubt Ashraful will ever surpass the average of 25, let alone 30 or even 35. I mean it would be a dream come true for ash to even get average of 28-30. The only hopeful one seems Nafees, Aftab, Shakib, Tamim, Mushfiq, and maybe Reza and the new players arriving into those pools.

Say he plays 100 more matches ODI till the next WC. That means he must average close to 47 in those to get his average to 35. Unrealistic expectation on the captain. Not when we have some away matches at NZ, SA and Australia.

Would be happy if Mr. Matin can get his average up 25 in ODIs and 30's in Test. Sakib should keep his average in upper 30's. For Alok, let him make the team first and play a match.

I honestly think Alok can perform that well while Shakib's batting will stabilize at about 30.00. Shakib's totally out of sorts at the moment, and needs to work very hard in domestic cricket to regain form. As much I like him, he is one of my favorite players, the 40 something average by WC2011 is highly unlikely.
