BCB begins post-mortem

Staff Correspondent

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has initiated a move to investigate Bangladesh’s World Cup performance and took the opinion of national players on Saturday about the batting collapse of the team, in certain matches.

All but opener Tamim Iqbal and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak appeared before the technical evaluation committee of the BCB and gave their opinion on what went wrong during the West Indies and South Africa matches.

Bangladesh collapsed to 58 and 78 all out in the two matches to suffer heavy defeats, which marred their otherwise modest World Cup campaign.

‘Players gave their opinion and we took a serious note of them,’ said Jalal Yunus, a member of the technical committee. ‘We will make a report based on their opinion and submit it to the Board for further course of action.’

Meanwhile, national coach Jamie Siddons also submitted a report to BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal about the World Cup campaign.

The BCB was scheduled to discuss the report on Saturday’s board of directors meeting, but the meeting was adjourned for some unavoidable reasons.

‘We thanked everyone for helping us in hosting the tournament successfully and then adjourned the meeting,’ said Yunus. ‘Siddons’ report will be discussed in the next meeting.’

The BCB officials said they will also decide Siddons’ contract renewal in the next meeting. ‘The present contract with the Australian coach expires in June, so we are in no hurry,’ said Yunus.

Currently, we are only negotiating the deals of fielding coach Julien Fountain and bowling Coach Ian Pont. Its seems Fountain will continue till the Australia series, but we have to sign a new deal should we want to keep Pont until that period,’ he said.

Australia will arrive in Dhaka for a three-match One-Day series on April 4 and any major changes in the team’s set up is unlikely until the period, said the BCB official.

Well, as I am sure you have learned by now from our posts in this forum, both Ian and myself are extremely passionate about developing players and helping them achieve their potential. This is why we go to work each day, contrary to one or two posters on BC we do not view these jobs as simply 9-5 work. We deal with people, and people are all different, thats the challenge of coaching. Oh and in answer to another post regarding this back room staff being one of the highest paid in the world, I can assure you, if we are . . its news to us !

This world cup has been a roller coaster for all concerned. Now its over, its time to assess the good, the bad & the downright ugly and LEARN FROM IT !!! Unless a child learns that fire is hot and burns, it will continue to play with it, and continue to risk injury or death. The morale of the story, if you make mistakes in life, you need to first of all recognise what they are, then take ownership of them (& not blame everything & everyone else) and then rectify whatever the problem is. Its not rocket science, really its not !

Coach;
I personally did not see anything ugly from Bangladesh in this world cup. I may have seen a few bad things but nothing ugly. The 3 quarter final matches I saw in the forms of WI vs PAK, NZ vs SA and SRI vs ENG are nothing worse or better than the BAN vs SAF or BAN vs WI. This is cricket and more importantly professional sports. Even if it is two games in the same world cup. I strongly believe that Bangladesh is the fastest growing "Test" country in the world and the coaching staff we have are competent, passionate and achievers. I have very sound logic to back that up as well. So cheers, and stop with this stupid witch hunt, already.

Absolutely agreed with that...

May be its just me but nowadays in ODIs, at home, I expect:

- We can win 3-5 out of 10 games against England
- We can win 5-7 out of 10 games against a full-strength WI (the WC performance notwithstanding!)
- We can win 4-6 out of 10 games against NZ

That is simply a massive improvement from around 4 years back when we were capable of the occasional upsets against teams ranked higher than us but the only one we could be counted on to beat consistently was Zimbabwe. We had one or two bats who averaged in the 30s (courtesy of Zimbabwe and other lower ranked teams) and the rest in the low 20s!

One of the other positives in the last 4 years for me has been the policy to generally persist with the same 'core' which a) means that players have been allowed to build on their early 'promise' without constantly looking over their shoulder b) gain experience and self-belief (consistently beating higher ranked opponents in close games is a tangible) and c) signaled to aspiring players that they really need to up their game and maintain it over a period of time to wear the national colours. Today as we look around for new faces we have a number of players to select from who have consistently accomplished over a number of seasons which simply wasn't the case 4 years ago.

Four years from now we will be going to Australia & New Zealand for the next world cup. I hope by then much of current core would be around (by virtue of their performance of course!) and therefore one of the more exprienced teams with a real shot at the title!

I am clearly in the minority here but I still believe that the current coaching staff - including Jamie Siddons - has shown enough results to be offered a one year contract to make their case that all the work that has gone into this team is about to pay off on a more consistent basis going forward.

BCB should certainly do a post-mortem of the WC debacle, but I doubt a governing body full of politicians can do a proper job. If they are sincere about the issue, they should hire professional sports administrators from Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, etc to tell them what are the mistakes the national team management and BCB itself are making.

I hope this view will become a majority soon and not a minority, but the players at least seem to agree with this "minority" viewpoint. I am also in agreement with you.

Just a random addition regarding the overall positive impact of the WC regarding the media outlook on BD-peter roebuck who a few days back were criticising BD and zimbabwe-is now claiming that BD will be a cricket superpower in 20 years-his piece is in the sydney morning herald titled Hosts the future as WINDIES bow out or something along those line

Judging from Coach Fountain's response goes to show the gap between what the media may report and what might be going on

I can only speak for myself and a few others but Julien, Ian and Siddons has my full backing, in my opinion to come to BD and work in such a new environment and a vastly different cricket culture will be difficult to start with. We claim and say things about coaches and players of which we have no clear knowledge and sometimes are pure speculation and wistful thinking

That's a good point, no point of having a post mortem if there aren't any experts involved

"BCB begins post-mortem",
Is there any need for this kinds of Post-mortem ? Why didn't they do a Pre-mortem ? We did not bat well, thats everybody knows. There is nothing to post-mortem here. How many ODI before the WC-2011 we have constantly score 250+, at least 200+ ? Can anybody say ? we have a very bad batting side which sometimes gives us a score to fight with our bowling which is also not so much standard without our left handed off spiner which become leg spine for most of the right handed batter in the circket world. We have a slow and low pitch in our ground, that how we try to beat other opponents. But whenever any team do home task on our poor batting and planned their way in, we can not resists.
