Default Why has Rasel not been picked ?

Please leave out the lack of pace nonsense. Rasel has the same pace as Vaas. He may not be in the same league but then none of our bowlers are.

We already have two right arm bowlers in Murtaza and Shahadat. Why a third ? And, Sharif is not exactly a world beater. I hope I am proved wrong !

Rasel's left arm bowling would have added variety. His forte is his accuracy. He also very cleverly disguises his balls. No doubt he had a good world cup.

I have the same questions. But there're no answers.

I'm afraid management's making the same mistake of considering a mediocre player with 14ish batting avg as a strong candidate for replacing Razzak. Insanity has its limits too, you know.

Rasel could be a better choice, I guess. lets hope for the best. Its a mammoth task ahead of Sharif.

Little bit? Where? I haven't seen anything. Out of 9 Tests, he scored 114. If he could bat a LITTLE bit, he would've scored 228+. This is Test cricket, not freakin ODI, that there has to be some kind of target within which he has to score some runs. Same goes for other batsmen though.

I guess it's because of Rasel's limitations with the old ball and Sharif's supposed ability to do wonders with it, something that I'm yet to witness.

When I'd seen Sharif bowl six/seven years ago, I didn't find much to say about him. There'd been a lot of fuss about him and how he could "reverse swing" the ball, but how can you ever do that if you're not bowling around 90 mph is beyond me. Besides, if he'd shown promise, so had Mafizur Rahman Munna, Monjurul Islam (the opening bowler), Safiuddin Babu, etc etc. Sure, he'd thrown down a couple of bouncers at 125 kph to Inzy, and had bowled a few maidens, but at 5'6", he hardly extracts any bounce beyond those occassional bouncers, and let's not even talk about carry through to the keeper. To add to that, he's actually supposed to be worse than what he used to be back then. My verdict - easy pickings for the Sri Lankan batsmen in the second test.

After having followed Bangladesh cricket for a while, you know a mediocre player when you see one. I hope he proves me wrong.

I think his pace is so innocent for the test match.

dude, even our best batsman can't negotiate with murali, so we really shouldn't rely on a medium pacer and his ability to bat a little bit to save our faces. if the real batsmen don't get it right, there's no point in trying to get to 160/10 from 80/7. either way we lose, and lose big.

I don't mind the selection of Sharif over Rasel. Rasel did not trouble the Indian batsman too much in his last test against India, I think he had a good stint bowling agaisnt Wasim Jaffer but that was about it. He didn't really threaten to take wickets in that test and the Indians played him with relative ease.

Also Sharif did get Karthik caught behind but it wasn't given by the "Chor" Darell Harper. Sharif also has a bit of reverse swing with the old ball with which he may be able to surprise a few batsman. Also as mentioned he bats better than Rasel and that could be very valuable to build a decent partnership at the end of the innigs if he stays in the crease for a while.

All in all, I don't think it was a horrible move to put Sharif on the team and I hope the decision will pay off.

oh come on it wasnt that bad of a decision. its like choosing paris hilton over nicole richie. Both are idiots but hey you gotta choose one(this case paris, cause of the ). same application goes to this, pretty much the same when it comes to wicket taking ability in test, so you gotta choose one blindly.

Our coach clearly said he was picked because of is ability to bat better than rasel and the reverse swing factor with the old ball...I personally think rasel is a better bowler than Sharif with the new ball..since we have both our openers healthy...sharif gets the pick because of his reverse switch ability ( we will soon find out)...the logic used by the coach/mgmt makes sense but whether he is capable of all those..is another story...

Sharif was a genuine pacer allrounder few years back, now what is left is debris, the crust of his bowling has lost all tooth.

Syed Rasel has a horrible record with SL. Also maybe they chose Sharif to create a variation of bounce.

For those who think Tamim and Aftab is fit for ODI's --------------- same for Rasel, he is for shorter version, not for TEST. In ODI power play his ball is effective.

absolutely!!... i agree 100% with that... there is no way that he wil b able to keep up to it... so it would hav been better if rassel would b in... coz he does hav some potential...
as for sharif... ive heard a lot... but im yet to see ANY good signs in his bowling whatsoever... and doin good in first clas as we all know dosent mean jack ****... so ya

lets all hope that we are proven wrong in this match...

Three things, Sharif can do a bit of batting, he can do a swinging bit with the old ball and he bowled a little better in the practice match, were crucial in drafting him in the final selection. It's now only a matter of days to see whether the decision was justified, however, we need to understand that we are not a team which would change overnight to a formidable one just by changing 2 or 3 players who all seem to be of more or less the same potential, the selection committee makes efforts only to put forth the available best combination which I don't think eventually bolster or weaken the team by a great extent!

I dont think Rasel is test material. He can be very good w/ a new ball but when u have Mash and Shahadat openning, then he's not going to get the new ball or wud he? Anyway, he cant do dang thing w/ the old ball. Now saying that Sharif is not that good either but he's ability to bat better get him in the team.

I thought ImtiazK was the man with BCB insider connection?

One simple reason why Rasel was left out - there is room for only 11 players.

I don't feel good with Sharif. But I am not willing to grey my hair over this irrelevant debate.

We need the next Talha to grow up fast.

i dont think sharif can bat at test level...they took him cuz he might have a yard of pace on rasel, and supposedly he can get the ball to reverse...

until sharif fails without doubt, rasel wont get another shot...too bad tho, cuz i think hes not bad as 3rd pacer.

i don't like this decision at all...Rasel should have been picked over Sharif. But then the selectors always know what's best.

Best of luck to Sharif ... he needs to inflict some serious damage to the SL batting line up.
