GOD help them. I've been to Chile several times on business and have good friends in Santiago. Concepcion, close to the epicenter of the quake, is a well developed city of close to a million and a half people, and I'd be surprised if there's no large scale damage there.
Chile has rapidly developed into the "second world" pushing first (Spain, Korea level) with a standard of living close to Greece and Turkey's ever since their transition to democracy. That makes them better prepared than many other countries but they'll still need help to deal with a quake of that magnitude, now being reported at 8.8! They had one even bigger than this in 1960 with close to 1700 dead. This time the death toll may be less.
GOD help them all. Following the story on Twitter ...

SANTIAGO, Chile – A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and a half and setting off a tsunami.
Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine. At least 6 people were killed, President Michele Bachelet said.
The quake hit at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST) and was centered 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Man I was just hanging out at the beach this arvo, the weather's been nuts anyway. So far people have just been warned to stay away from the beaches and coastal area. Apparently they'll know more info after the 'tsunami' reaches Hawaii. Supposed to potentially hit the Queensland coast at 8:15am and NSW at 8:45.
I think 122 confirmed dead in Chile so far, hope it doesn't go much beyond that.

Sad to hear this. Thank God, no lives where lost. And worst of all, I live right near some fault.
Edit: Just read mona's post. 122 dead? Tragic. Innalillahe wa inna ilahe rajeun.

Very sad news indeed.
Whats going on underneath us??
Too many earthquakes at terrifying magnitude lately.
May Allah protects us all.

This is very sad. I was pretty surprised - and relieved - earlier to hear that there were no casualties off an 8.8 magnitude earthquake. Looks like that was just wishful thinking.
I fear for Bangladesh - the country has been on the radar for a while now and has practically no defense against an Earthquake of much smaller magnitude. Especially the cities.
