Default Proud nurse Vettori\'s anxious hospital shift

Nurse Robyn Vettori had an anxious shift at Waikato Hospital on Saturday as her son Daniel scored his maiden test century in the first test against Pakistan.

"I was trying to keep up with the score, but it's difficult when you are a nurse in a busy ward," she said. "A few of the patients knew what was going on and my colleagues kept me up to date.

"They suggested I bunk off and go to the ground, but you know what a superstitious bunch cricketers are. I'd probably walk in the gate and he'd have go out."

She managed to tune into the radio during her lunch break.

"Luckily he didn't muck around in the 90s and when he got to 100 there was a big cheer on the ward," she added.

She got to the ground just as the players were coming off for tea with New Zealand all out for 563 and her son unbeaten on 137.

Vettori, 24, has scored one other first-class century, against Leicestershire during New Zealand's 1999 tour to England.

"This one was a bit more special because it was on his home ground," his mother said.
