Why? Wonder what's the reasoning for this. If Rongpur qualifies to be a division then so does Mymensingh, Noakhali and Comilla.

Only 8 districts and a population of a little over 1 crore - I'd be very interested to know why.

Ireland has a population of 4.4m and that is for an independent country. What is then wrong with a division with 10.5m population ?
Rangpur is one of the oldest Municipality in Bangladesh ."Rangpur" declared as a District Head quarter on 16 December, 1769. Rangpur Municipality Website

Rangpur totally deserved to be a division. It is very difficult for a person travelling Rajshahi from Panchgarh and nearby district. Now it will be more easier for them to travel to divisional town.
Next district deserves to be a division is Comilla. But it is not that urgent as Rangpur

There's nothing wrong with it. I was just wondering what the reason might be. One crore is not a large number in the context of Bangladesh.

Human lives are undervalued in Bangladesh. All of us who live in the civilized democratic world , should not abide by the devaluation of human lives under the present norm in Bangladesh which you have described as" Bangladeshi context". Population is never the only one criterion in the administrative decision making process. Rangpur should have been the divisional HQ instead of Rajshahi at the very first place. Rajshahi became a district HQ in 1772 while Rangpur in 1769. Under representation at the national politial level caused this negligence throughout Rangpaur's history.

we can think of converting all the districts to division... that will surely calm down the people of the respective districts.
anyway, IMO it is a good decision to declare Rongpur division.
considering history i think greater comilla and greater mymensing deserves to be declared as division too.

bigger than barisal, sylhet, slighter lower population that khulna.
rajshahi pop wise was 2nd largest and north bengal was particularly hard pressed for better adminstration as poverty rates were always rising without any industries etc. now that there is a rangpur division, more focus can be paid to local issues (atleast in theory) now north bengal ppl dont need to travel to rajshahi for any govt services. etc etc 13 mil ppl can be served way better by having their own adminstration
do not forget how many countries in this world can boast a population of 13 mil?
dhaka should be broken up 2 along with chittagong for same reasons

Heh, that's undeniably true.
But that's not what I meant. I think the main motivation of creating a Rangpur division would be to concentrate more government effort on the region so that some of the serious problems (like Monga or severe unemployment.) could;d be solved.

i think thats the main reason why rangpur has been made a division. monga affected regions are usually too far away from most govt service center places.

Bhai, you're putting words in my mouth for no reason. It was a genuine question and I was looking for a genuine reply like Slysaint's.

Yeah I am convinced that Rangpur deserves to be a Division. Sorry for the earlier skepticism. My choto khalu is from Rangpur. So no hard feelings guys.
On the other hand does Barishal really deserve divisional status? They can't even field their own cricket team. But I doubt the government would want to upset anyone by merging divisions. Maybe BNP will merge Sylhet with Chittagong as they failed to win a single seat there
