The recent death of two college students have sparked protests in the country by students. We have a nasty Minister mocking these deaths to be a trivial matter. And an Education Minister taking 3 days to recognise it officially.
The fact that unfit vehicles (easily identifiable) is allowed to be driven in the street without
consequences shows how corrupt the society is.
This is all a result of syndicate that controls the bus and truck industry. New investors are resisted from getting into the business. The existing ones have no regulations to follow to operate their vehicle/business except for payment of a small sum to the authority dedicated to maintaining the regulations. Hence no fitness, no drivers licence, infact a lot of the drivers cannot even read or write.. but hey no problemos.

I call this the "That'll do" mentality.
Everything we attempted is either half assed. Look at our infrastructure a pristine example.

I also agree with vehicles need to be fit. But it is more important to get drivers trained with valid licenses, put safety precautions in speeding and overtaking areas where accidents happen, and stop jay walking.
There are reports of some of Hasina's party goons are alleging the students to be BNP and Jamaat brain washed, while someone went as far as branding the students RAJAKARs children
This is as bad if not worse than the comment a Minsiter or MP made about the Rana plaza disaster that some BNP Jamat supporters shook the gate of the plaza to cause the downfall.

It is very normal scenario in BD. Even if Anyone farts, BAL will blame BNP Jamat for this. The table will turn around if BNP gets elected. Then they will start blaming BAL for everything. Ridiculous Politics and stupid politicians

Disagree, a fit vehicle is a must... The first accident I witnessed live was a bus T-boning 2 rickshaws. It happened not because the driver was at fault but he could not stop because his hydraulic brakes gave up...
Also it is important for all vehicles on the road to be able to anticipate the movement of all other vehicles, without indicators working it is impossible. One can only blame the driver once the vehicle he operates is safe to be driven in the road.

A driver without a license shouldnt be allowed to drive at all regardless of the condition of the vehicle though.

True.. also true that you can buy a genuine licence (or atleast u could few years back) from BRTA. Just pay the money and no test required. Hope that changed (if someone can shed some light) ?
Also there are hardly any bus/truck driving schools in Bangladesh/India/Pakistan. Usually the helpers learn from the drivers and that has been going on for ages.
One of the condition for driving is that the driver must be able to read and write, but that condition was protested by the bus truck owners and drivers syndicate. Tells u all u need to know.

Bangladesh need a new face, instead of these inherited and entitled idiots
I share your sentiments however thats beside the topic. Even Khaleda would have used the same force and done the same thing.
What Hasina should do is make some heads roll from her own party to calm the situation. She is instead using police and in some areas army to get a grip.
Dear guys, what happened? I get the gist that something of extremely sad and horrible happened, a student(s) died in road accident due to reckless bus or truck drivers.
I am at work, I couldn't do a quick search, will do later at home..
But I read our BC quickly every now and then...
Thank you, bhais and apus.
May the souls of the student victims rest in eternal peace.

This is not getting strong attention outside Bangladesh.
Sad times BK Bhai. Short cut story:
- 2 college students was killed by a bus driver
- Students from the college protesting for justice for these students
- Police starts attacking students.
- Students enraged by the comments made by a smiling Minister implying this is not a big issue for kids to get killed
- Students from all walks of life demanding safer roads and licenses for drivers
- Today BCL and police attacking students and intimidating them with gun shots
Allhamdullillah no further deaths during protest period

Bangladeshi politics is kinda like Zimbabwean cricket. All the talented students are going overseas and settling abroad , and getting degrees from prestigious universities.
If a few million well educated students in law,Commerce, economics and business came back to Bangladesh, we could of formed a third party , easily strong enough to take down the uneducated and back wards thinking politicians of BNP and ALP.
Alas this we'll never happen , but one can dream. We can call it UDSP

Politics is not that easy tbh. Education especially in the sub continent doesnt have as big as a role as it does in Western countries. Before, you only needed money to win in Bangladesh, but from what I heard a newbie even in a fair election cant win unless he spends alot of time with the voters. One of BC forum members' relative in here stood in an election when BNP contested BNP. He was atleast 5 times richer than his rival and spend lots of money on the election also more educated. But he got defeated by a younger guy from his same party, as he spent more time with the local people.
Also the nature of our people does not allow good people to get elected. We had all these corrupt politicians in jail during at one time during a care taker government. But still they were allowed to contest for elections.
I often hear our PMs, ministers, MPs asking foreign investors to invest in BD. Don't they look at the infrastructure of BD and feel ashamed when they make this request to foreign investors? What impression does an investor get when he lands at our airport and comes out of it?
As I had said before, BD unfortunately never had any visionary leader. Sk Mujib was a visionary, but as he said, sobai pai sonar khoni, ami paisi chorer khoni. Thus the vision remained a vision.
Since 1990s, when parliamentary politics made a comeback to BD, our rulers, both BNP and AL, have ruled simply to maintain the status quo and use the state as a money making machine for their future or the future of their family somewhere else. They never had any sincere vision for BD. Thus, we have had development (unnoyon), but this was always unnoyon of joratali/eye wash/kaj chole type. And whatever development has happened, the true goal was percentage. But now that our economy has grown, population grown - our jora tali road infrastructure is failing to take pressure any longer. Road accidents result in more than 8000 deaths per year and many more in permanent disabilities.
At the same time, whatever system/infrastructure we have, if we the BD people were civil and well mannered, we could have done better. But like it or not, BD people in general are bad - no manners, corrupt, jealous, not law abiding....(you can name almost all negatives here). Last December when I visited BD, my driver was driving very recklessly - with utmost disrespect to rules - cutting people for no reason, honking for no reason and what not. I confronted him and explained to him that this is not right. I told him that I drive and that this sort of competition in the roads and harakiri will not reach you to your destination earlier save may be few minutes. He did not buy my logic (and my logic is true - over speeding often saves you max few minutes). He said, "afnegor kothamoto gari calaile saradin rastay boia thahon lagbno." Then he got into an accident. The accident happened outside Dhaka, and our car was about to fall into a ditch. But God saved us. Both parties agreed that we will go our ways - but local mastans gathered immediately out of no where and demanded chanda. They blocked our car and didn't allow us to leave until both parties paid those mastans to the tune of 5000 BDT. During that whole fiasco, I heard from those mastans language I never heard before.
Anyway, coming to the recent protests, these are only pixels of the bigger image about the anger public has about government. Government trying to put the fire - gave 20 lakh to each family, reprimanded Shahjahan khan but road system will remain jei lau sei kodu.
One easier solution is to Enforce Traffic laws and pedestrian rights just like the U.S.A. and other developed countries. if people violate the laws, then fines should be upheld and license suspension. if they still disobey then send the offenders to jail, no exceptions!

This guy knows how to talk sense that I will agree. His talking style is a bit like the deceased tyrant Saka Chowdhury.
