9 Bangladeshi UN Peacekeepers Killed in Democratic Republic of Congo
9 UN Peacekeepers Killed in Democratic Republic of Congo By VOA News
25 February 2005
The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo says up to nine peacekeepers have been killed in an ambush.
The U.N says unidentified gunmen attacked the troops earlier Friday, during a patrol in Congo's volatile northeastern region of Ituri. All those who died are from Bangladesh. Several other U.N. troops are wounded or missing.
Thousands of U.N. troops are in Congo to help oversee the transition from a five year long war which ended in a series of peace deals in 2003.
Although the war is over, eastern Congo remains volatile with sporadic violence among various ethnic groups and the Congolese army and dissident soldiers.

I was just wordless hearing this news from my friend first.
Captain Shahid Ashraf Khan, the officer in charge was my friend.
He was a Cadet of Rajshahi Cadet College and joined Bangladesh Army in 1992/93 batch. After just 2 days of the day the incident occurred, he supposed to be in vacation and traveled Europe. He had the air ticket and everything was ready to get him back to BD after travelling Europe. But the Congo militia put him to death. He was from Bogra. He was just 30.
May Allah rest his/their souls in peace.

Thanks Dr. Z . The pics definitely put things more in perspective.
But also, being atypical of myself, I have to ask, where the SHAMS K. mourners of this board are ?
But lets not get distracted !

Pundit, how would you scale your personal sadness/respect for the following kinds of people?
1. A rickshawala caught in a crossfire while earning his living.
2. A peacekeeper troop killed in an ambush.
3. A lawmaker assasinated by terrorists.
Are they (they= the particular "measurements" of your respect) all equal? Is there any precedence? Why or why not?
