Miserable form of English batters continue. I guess they are thinking they can turn around against Bangladesh.

Default Telegraph (13 May): Shahadat is on fire

By Simon Briggs at Fenner's
(Filed: 13/05/2005)

Shahadat Hossain, an 18-year-old fast bowler from Dhaka, has been a revelation in this match. And not just to the spectators but to his team-mates as well.

Until this week, Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore had only seen film of Shahadat, who was discovered through

a talent-spotting contest in Narayanganj. Despite some encouraging performances in the nets, no one could have expected him to bowl with such sustained bounce and venom, finishing with figures of 15-2-33-4.

"He really wants to play in the first Test," said Whatmore. "It may be that he has leapfrogged everyone."

Like Mashrafe Mortaza, the only other bowler of any pace in this side, Shahadat comes from a family who farm chickens. Poor nutrition, especially a lack of protein, is a problem for young Bangladeshi seamers, but Shahadat has grown to 6ft 3in, a giant among his countrymen.

When he reaches the bowling crease, Shahadat releases such a piercing grunt that the support staff have already dubbed him 'Sharapova'.

The game drifted to a close yesterday after the Universities had inched past their follow-on target of 232 with nine wickets down. The figure was irrelevant in any case as Bangladesh were looking for batting practice.

I actually meant to write about Rajib's grunt when he bowls but totally forgot about it when I wrote the blog for day 2. He really does let a Monica Seles/Sharapova style grunt when he releases the ball, something not very common among bowlers in the game of cricket.
