Default CI: 'Wasn't nervous in 90s' - Shamsur

'Wasn't nervous in 90s' - Shamsur

Mohammad Isam in Fatullah
November 4, 2013

Probably for the first time in his career, Shamsur Rahman, the Bangladesh batsman, didn't feel worried in the nineties. He moved from 91 to 95 with a slog over mid-on that he hit on one knee, and on 96, he tried to mow Corey Anderson over cover. The ball took the edge, though, and he walked away, not feeling too bad because it did not take away from the fact that his 96 was extremely useful to Bangladesh's cause.

Sounds good but sorry, I don't buy it.

Read it in Prothom Alo yesterday. Really impressed. He was playing for the team for sure. He can be as crucial for us as Shikhar Dhawan of India. Has very good temperament.

I did. What he claims (not nervous here, although he gets nervous in domestic matches) doesn't match what I saw, in the match of many domestic matches where I've seen him trying to get to a 100 quicker than necessary, and getting out playing a mistimed low percentage, aerial shot. He is no different from most of our others batters that way.

He did not look nervous at all. I remember anamul closing in on his century. That was painful to watch

SRS did not give any indication of being nervous. It was not an edgy innings, neither was there blind slogging. It was some real clean hitting.

"I was just trying to play my own game because if I thought about the hundred then maybe I would have played a few dot balls.
No harm in playing own game, but the shot he played to get out was rather for his own 100 than helping the team getting a 4. He got out in a crucial time when Naeem and he was building a good partnership. He got out just before bowling power play. In such situation, I would rather prefer playing few dot balls than losing a well established batsman.

Since he is new in this circuit, he can be excused this time but he should not have played that wild shot to get his 100 quickly. He could have made up those few dot balls during bowling power play.

Had played out a few dot balls in the 90s and I think the shot he played to get out was an effort to compensate for those dot balls by getting a boundary. He didn't look like he was playing for himself at any stage of the innings because we kept the required run rate under control throughout his innings. Had he been a selfish batsman he could have easily let Zia do all the hitting. I like his attitude already so lets see if he can follow up with more good performances
