Default From Magura to No.1 : Another Cricinfo article on Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan
From Magura to No. 1
The world's top-ranked allrounder is a Bangladeshi who has oodles of self-belief to go with his undoubted talent

Utpal Shuvro
February 6, 2009

Shakib picks up yet another match award © AFP
It's one of cricket's ironies that one of its best allrounders of the moment might have been lost to football instead, but for several turns of fate. Like every other boy in the provincial town of Magura, 170 miles from Dhaka, Shakib al Hasan was a regular on the playing field whenever he got a chance but the big draw was always football. His father had played the game for Khulna Division and a cousin had gone on to represent Bangladesh, so football more or less ran in the family.
Cricket was on the sporting curriculum though, and the fashion among the youth was "tape-tennis" cricket. Shakib was fairly proficient and was often "hired" to play for different villages. One such game changed his life.
A local umpire called Saddam Hossain was impressed by the kid's prowess and called him to practise with the Islampur Para Club, one of the teams in the Magura Cricket League. Shakib turned up and, as was his wont, batted aggressively and bowled fast. That was what he knew best. Then, suddenly, inexplicably, he began bowling spin - and had the batsmen totally flummoxed.
He made the cut for the Islampur team and picked up a wicket with the first ball on his Magura Cricket League debut - his first-ever delivery with a proper cricket ball.
It could sound a bit too pat but Shakib's journey from Magura to the top of the ICC rankings for allrounders - the first Bangladesh player ever to top any ICC ranking - hasn't happened overnight, nor has it been the result of any one dramatic or magical moment. It's been a long journey, with its share of ups and downs, happiness and sorrow, laughter and tears, since he first held a bat eight-odd years ago.

Hmm, read it; top player, top article but top frustration as well that he couldn't get into the IPL; but i'm really sure it in no way will distract Shakib from his determination, he's a tough guy!

BDFlag Utpal Shuvro: A true journalist for BD Circket.

Utpal Shuvro is a wonderful professional journalist in the not-so-long Bangladesh cricket history. His abundance in intellectual foresight, sports insight, wit, and humor in his endless, relentless and splendid writing on Bangladesh cricket is simply mesmerizing and being recognized in and abroad with a wonder. But his journey at the beginning was not for ‘granted’ and smooth when Bangladesh cricket was just blooming.

Utpal Shuvro went through some challenging situations in the early days of Bangladesh cricket but because of his firm determination and love for his country and cricket, he is still there with splendor and glory where he started his journey as a ‘power sports journalist’ – he never changed as a true patriot.

He never backed off either and put his country down even when some foreign sports journalists threw some cheap comments on slow but steadily developing Bangladesh cricket on different occasions especially one in the Eden Gardens of Calcutta a few years back. Later, he successfully proved that his pen is surely mightier than those comments. ‘We recognize your tough fights in those difficult times and your brilliant writings with adorable and imitable professionalism and integrity’.

Ponting thinking of not playing in IPl this year. Kolkata Knight Riders are looking for a replacement from the Auction list of players. Other than Shakib, is there any batsman, who missed out on the auction? Shakib as a batsman - not a bad choice - also he'd provide good spin option to the team.

"Joy Bhattacharya, Kolkata's team director, confirmed the franchise will seek a replacement. "We are looking for a replacement and are bargaining hard with two or three players already. We are looking for a batsman who will be an able replacement," he told Cricinfo. "The rules for a replacement says that if for any reason a player is unavailable for the entire season, only then a player from the auction list [the original auction list of 110-odd] can be picked."
