Default Highest number of lefties

I am sure someone has touched upon this topic somewhere in BC. If not, there were 7 left-handed batsmen in the Bangladesh team that beat the Netherlands yesterday in Tamim, Imrul, Zunaed, Shahriar, Shakib, Shuvo and Razzak. Did any team at this level have 7 left-handed batsmen? I am not aware, but would like to know.

Yes it was discussed before but stayed as speculation, no definite answer was obtained.

I do not think there is an answer readily available without asking Steven. You wanna go ahead and do that?

maybe this left-handers topic was discussed way too many times for me to ask this.... why is it a big deal to be a left handed batsman? is it considered more superior to right-handed batsman at some level?
for example orthodox bowler/bowling attacks are right handed batsman focused thus giving you more advantage if you are a lefty? Is this still true in modern cricket (odi/t20) ??

Some of the Windies sides of the recent sides had a lot of lefties too if I recall correctly. Chanders would be the only right-hander.

It does impact the bowlers. For starters, if the bowlers strength is LBWs and Yorkers, they will be impacted because the line is different. He will have to bowl over the wicket or adjust the line and it makes it easier for the batsman to pick the ball better.

It was a record to have 7 left handed batsman in any world cup during the match. I am pretty certain that it is a record for any form of the game because no ODI or Test team has this many left handed batsman.

In way it is fascinating because not too long ago, we were craving for atleast one left handed batsman and when Dickens was selected, Bashar and the team was elated to have him because they thought it will help them tremendously. Though Dickens failed in his first impression, he did comeback somewhat to the team after 5 years or so.

While conventional wisdom would say exactly what you said and is very much true, I just don't know why a right handed bowler should not be able to take advantage of the natural away (coming in to the lefty) swing of a new ball and use it to the exact advantage a lefty bowler enjoys against a right handed batsmen. Just look at the way Tamim got out by Bukhari. That ball came in too much which was why it hit Tamim on the pads and went on to hit the off stump, if it just held it's line, which was what Tamim playing for, then it would have been just another good ball instead of a wicket taking ball.
I am a new ball bowler myself and always enjoy bowling to the lefties especially at the begining of the match. And toward the end if I'm lucky to reverse.........but it is rather difficult.

Since I believe in Natural Selection theory put forward by Charles Darwin, So heres my explanation....

We had so many slow orthodox left arm bowlers (from the time of Enamul Haque sr and Mohammad Rafique), that it was only a matter of time that batsmen evolved to bat left handed to counter this threat.

If was a batter during Moni's "reign" I would have told myself, " O! I would have more of dem, please"! And the only threat he would ever pose is the Bangladeshi batsmen at the receiving end of his umpiring wonders.

Rafique on the other hand a different kettle of fish!

Not a joke, actually a fact that any laft arm players playing the domestics are actually encouraged to bowl slow left arm spin. Since bangladeshi right handers in always thought to be vulnerable to left arm spin. Even left arm pacers are encouraged to try left arm spin, just our culture.

I remember Rafique was a left arm pacer before starting with SLA bowling.
Tapash baisya in his recent interview mentioned that if his son ever wants to be a cricketer than he would encourage him to bowl SLA. Makes u wonder!!! (Ian Pont would be mighty pissed)

I will open a topic on rhb vs lhb after the world cup, but yes, we have a large number of lefties. Traditionally Australia, SL and the Windies have had more leftie batsmen. We seem to be going that way
On the other hand,. S Africa and Pakistan have had very few lefties at least in the last decade or so.

It would be interesting to know how manyu of our LHB are naturally left handed (i.e. they use their left hand for writing etc)

We now have the record to play the highest number of left handed batsmen (7) in a WC match!

Here is those matches:

First: Griffith, Hinds, Adams, Chanderpaul, Gayle, Jacobs†, McLean, Ambrose
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63880.html

Second: Griffith, Hinds, Adams, Lara, Nagamootoo, Jacobs†, McLean, Ambrose
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63892.html

And this is not the first time we are playing with 7 LHB in any ODI.

We have done it before here against South Africa in 2008.

Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Shakib Al Hasan, Mosharraf Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Syed Rasel

We actually equal the previous record set by Ireland in 2007 World Cup.
7 LHB were: Bray, Porterfield, Morgan, NJ O'Brien, Botha, Mooney, Rankin

At the moment It looks disadvantaged to me to have so many lefties in the team. it's monotonous to have so many lefties up the order. Bowlers aren't disturbed at all in maintaining their lines. A left and right combination would have made a huge difference in our top order performance.

Interestingly, their first 5 bowlers were all right handers.

Thanks faisal

A left-right combination is very difficult for a bowler. You have to change your line, etc every time the batsmen change ends. Even in baseball, teams try to put batters batting from alternate sides as much as they can.
