Thank you Googly Bhai and Sayed Hague bhai. Lintu's stat looked real promising. I have seen/known mostly all the other performers around that time beside him. Funny it is. Not enough exposure and forgetful minds may be a reason for that. Anyways, thanks again to both of you.

Thanks for saving my skin, Sayeed bhai. I made a lot of claims about Lintu but could not back them up with evidence. It was also great to go back to those years and see the scorecards again.
You are welcome Tiger-eye bhai.
Sorry Miraz bhai, for distracting people from your thread. May be it should have been a different thread.

I actually saw that match @ Rajshahi. My first international cricket game - had gone to visit my fupa bari and some cousin was a huge cricket fan. I have not looked back since. I remember Hunte more than I remember Lintu's Michelle.

And he is selected in the Bangladesh squad for Champions Trophy. Another SLA allrounder to feature in the national squad.
Who is next,
IMO, Nazmus Sadat, not a SLA allrounder but a very good Left handed Batsman.

Wow 4 in the 14 - Rafiq, Razzak, Saqib, Mehrab
If they 4 can make first 11 in a signle game (when Mashrafi and Forhad will need to open attack), that would be a record. Was there any other team in ODI history with 4 left arm spinner in the squad?

With so many SLAs already in the Bangladesh team, future is actually not so bright for upcoming SLAs like Nadif or Elias, even if Rafique retires shortly after the world cup.
My advice for the next generation of left arm cricketers is to try to be either a batsman or a pacer (preferably, be both). If you still want to be a spinner, be a chainaman bowler.

I see it other wise. The more competition the better by-product we'll have. If Elias, Nadif are turns out to be better than Razzak, Rafique down the road wouldn't you want them? Only the best would get a shot. With 6 nations mostly have pitches that helps slow bowlers I think this is a great asset to have. But I also agree that we need lefty fast. Not medium pacers.

Let me take back my words about Elias Sunny, he has quite an impressive strike rate for being an SLA. He was praised by journalists for being able to take wickets on unfriendly batting surfaces last NCL (a quality most of our bowlers lack). Also, as Miraz said, he seems to be a decent allrounder.
However, an overly SLA dependant Bangladesh side stays valunarable to opponents that have quality left hand bats. After the retirement of Rafique, I see only one spot for a specialist SLA in the team (certainly so if Shakib and Mehrab can cement their places in the national team), and at this point Razzak (oneday) and Enamul (Test) seem to be automatic choices for that position. Any national team outsider who wants to challange their positions has to raise his standard to an exceptional level.

It seems to me (after watching a number of Bangladeshi spinners in action), the slow bowlers in Bangladesh are a bit too slow. That's why they're not as successful as others from other cricketing countries. They have good spinning abilities. But their extreme slowness gives the batsman ample time to change their shot. Lack of variation is another huge deficit. So for any batsman, it takes very few balls to read the bowler and then he can bat easily. Finally the lack of consistency...in a over, Bangladeshi bowlers have to many wild balls (balls that are not according to the field placement, too much space given to the batsman, etc.). In my opinion, these are the main reasons for the lack of success for Bangladeshi slow bowlers. The cricket minds of Bangla cricket may shade some new lights on the topic?

I agree we need to change our approach. We need more variation in our arsenal ... we need to try out what these spectra light spinners can do...
to do this we need to light our indoor training pitch...
we need to change our practice ball to tennis cricket ball...
and we need to change our spinners runups and relaese like this....
Only then we can expect some good result. Otherwise same ol same ol.....Slow Left Arm Bowlers by a hali.... buy one get three free kind of situation.

Are you sure ? On contrary to what you saying, Shakib and Nadif were often confused as medium pacers. Rafique, in his own words, was actually struggling in Zimbabwe because he was bowling too fast. Razzak also from time to time seemed to be bowling too fast and flat.

I am really confused whether you have really seen Bangladeshi SLA's in action
As TheWatcher mentioned, Sakib & Nadif are quite fast, Nabil Samad is even more quick, Rafiq's average speed is more than most spin bowlers, Razzak also bowls at a good pace & that's why he is so economic in ODI.
Regarding wild ball, I don't want to comment, check the economy rate of SLA's with other bowlers. You may find the answer.

Our slow left arm army is converting the prospect into reality.
Just 6-7 months time and what a big difference they are making!!
If our batsmen can give them some run to fight, they can take any opposition down.
Against India they shared 6 wickets for 90 odd runs in 30 overs, today they shared 6 wickets for 96 runs in 29.4 overs.

i think it's safe to say now that razzak has arrived, although it wouldn't be unfair to say so after the games against new zealand (pre world cup) and india.

So many SLAs (add Murad, Saqlain, Saju, Suhrawardi, and Mosharraf to the list made by Miraz) but we are yet to produce a test class spinner after Rafique.
Enamul Jr has shown promise, but his figures are hardly satisfactory in matches except against Zimbabwe.

I see a lot of promise in Enamul...the kid has something special in him....its hard for him to come back to the national team every few months and dropped after one or two match..he should be paired up with Rafique against SA and we need to make the pitches spinner friendly to help set back SA pace attack.

The way I see it, Rafique is at the end of his career and Enamul is yet to find his feet in international cricket - it will be stupid of us to overly rely on our spinners at this point. One positive that came out of NZ series is that our bowlers managed to take all ten wickets of opposition in their first innings. So, please people, don't ask for pitches where we won't be able to do even that.

As we were able to capture all ten wickets, the worry is ODI bowling which was more or less crap except Abdur Razzak.

This is the article I wrote about 5 years ago. Nice to see Elias Sunny who was mentioned in the article along with other promising names is going to finally make his debut in this Test match in Chittagong against the West Indies. I will be eagerly waiting to see his bowling. I hope he fares better than other who faded away like Enam Jr, Mosharraf Rubel and Abdur Razzak in Tests.

i now sometimes feel that all these SLAs are becoming a burden to us...too many of them..we are not seeing any good leg or off spinners and our attack is becoming more and more one dimensional
