আমাকে বলা হয়েছে খেলাধুলায় শুরু ও সাফল্যের গল্প লিখতে। সাফল্য? আমি মোটেও মনে করি না সাফল্য কিছু পেয়েছি। অর্জনও করতে পারিনি তেমন কিছু। ক্যারিয়ার তো সবে শুরু! তবে লোকের আগ্রহ যেমন আছে আমাকে নিয়ে, বড় কিছু প্রত্যাশা করে আমার কাছে, এসবে মনে হয় কিছু একটা হয়তো করেছি। যদিও আমি এটিকে ‘সাফল্য’ মনে করি না। আমি বলতে পারি আমার শুরু নিয়ে।

পেছন ফিরে তাকালে একটা ছবি প্রায়ই চোখে ভাসে আমার। কক্সবাজার জেলা স্টেডিয়ামের গ্যালারির রেলিং ধরে দাঁড়িয়ে আছি বন্ধু আরিফের সঙ্গে। ১৩ কি ১৪ হবে তখন আমার বয়স। বিকেএসপির ক্যাম্প চলছিল মাঠে। সেদিকে অপলক তাকিয়ে মনে হচ্ছিল, ‘যদি আমিও থাকতে পারতাম ক্যাম্পে!’

কক্সবাজারে আমরা থাকি বৈদ্যরকোনায়। কিন্তু খেলতাম পাশেই বৈল্যরপাড়া সিঅ্যান্ডবি কলোনি মাঠে। টেপ টেনিসের বল দিয়ে খেলতাম আমরা। কিন্তু তখন থেকেই আমি সোজা ব্যাটে, বেসিক মেনে খেলতাম। এটা সহজাতভাবেই ছিল আমার মধ্যে। উল্টাপাল্টা শট খেলতাম না। বড় ভাইয়েরা আমার ব্যাটিং দেখতে আসতেন। একটা লফটেড শট খেললেই সবাই চেঁচাতেন, ‘তোর এভাবে খেলার দরকার নাই। তুই সোজা ব্যাটে খেললে দেখতে ভালো লাগে।’ আমার নিজের বড় ভাই, শাওন ভাই, এলাকার বড় ভাইয়েরা সব সময় এটা বলতেন। ব্যাপারটি তখনই আমার মাথায় ঢুকে গিয়েছিল।

কলোনির মাঠে খেলা, প্রায়ই বল গিয়ে আশপাশে বাসার জানালা ভাঙত। অনেকের গায়ে লাগত। লোকজনের অভিযোগের শেষ ছিল না। একবার অতিষ্ঠ হয়ে কয়েকজন জোট বেঁধে পুলিশ ডেকে আনল। আমরা তো হতভম্ব। ফরহাদ ভাইকে দেখিয়ে তারা বলল, ‘এইটা হলো নাটের গুরু, কোচ। এইটারে ধরেন।’ ফরহাদ ভাইকেসহ আমাদের ব্যাট-স্টাম্প নিয়ে গেল পুলিশ। স্রেফ ভয় দেখানোর জন্য, একটু পরেই ছেড়ে দিয়েছে। ভয় আমরা পেয়েছিলাম খানিকটা, তবে দমে যাইনি। পরদিন থেকেই প্রবল উৎসাহে আবার ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লাম!

আমাদের পাড়ায় পাড়ায় ম্যাচগুলো তুমুল প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা� �ূর্ণ হতো। অন্য পাড়ার সঙ্গে ম্যাচের আগে নিজেদের মধ্যে দুই-তিনটি ম্যাচ হতো। সেটার পারফরম্যান্সে আমাদের দল ঠিক করা হতো। এখন মনে হয়, চাপে ভালো করা ব্যাপারটি তখন থেকেই ঢুকে গিয়েছিল আমার মধ্যে। সিরিয়াসলি ক্রিকেট খেলা বা জাতীয় দলে খেলার কথা তখনো ভাবনাতেই ছিল না। ভাবনা এল, ওই বিকেএসপির ক্যাম্পটা দেখে। জেলা স্টেডিয়ামে ক্যাম্প দেখতে গিয়ে মনে হলো, আমিও চেষ্টা করতে পারি! শুনলাম পরের বছর আবার হবে ক্যাম্প। অপেক্ষায় রইলাম।

বছর ঘুরে আবার ক্যাম্পের সময় এল। পরীক্ষা দিলাম। দেখি যারা চার-ছয় মারার চেষ্টা করছে, তারা বাদ। আমি তো এমনিতেই সোজা ব্যাটে নিচে নিচে খেলি। একটু দেখেই আমাকে নিয়ে নিল এক মাসের ক্যাম্পে। ওই ক্যাম্পেও ভালো করলাম। তখন বিকেএসপি কোচ নাজিম স্যার আমাকে বললেন বিকেএসপিতে পরীক্ষা দিতে। বাসায় বললাম, কেউ রাজি নন। প্রথমে শাওন ভাইয়াকে রাজি করালাম। পরে আমার কোচ বাবাকে রাজি করালেন। বাবা করালেন মাকে। বাবা-মা আমাকে নিয়ে চললেন বিকেএসপিতে পরীক্ষা দিতে। আম্মার সে কী টেনশন! তাঁর টেনশন দেখে আমি ফরম পূরণ করতে ভুল করে ফেলি। তিনিই আবার দিলেন বকা! যাহোক, সেসব শেষ হলো। কিন্তু পরীক্ষার আগেই আমি বাদ!

তখন ন্যূনতম উচ্চতা লাগত ৪ ফুট ১০ ইঞ্চি। আমার ছিল ৪ ফুট ৭। অনেক অনুরোধে কাজ হলো না। আমরা তিনজনই মন খারাপ করে বাড়ির পথ ধরলাম। আব্বা বললেন, ‘সমস্যা নেই, পরের বছর আবার পরীক্ষা দিবি।’ তখন একটা ধারণা ছিল যে সাইকেল চালালেই লম্বা হওয়া যায়। কক্সবাজারে ফেরার পথেই চট্টগ্রাম থেকে দুই হাজার ৬০০ টাকায় একটা সাইকেল কিনে দিলেন আব্বা। বাড়ি ফিরেই শুরু হলো সাইকেল চালানো। পরের বছর পরীক্ষা দিতে গেলাম যখন, উচ্চতা তখন ৫ ফুট। অনায়াসেই চান্স পেলাম বিকেএসপিতে।

সত্যি বলতে, বিকেএসপিতে আমি খুব একটা ভালো ছিলাম না। আমাদের ব্যাচে ছিলেন নাসির হোসেন। প্রথম দু-এক দিন দেখার পরই আমরা জানতাম নাসির জাতীয় দলে খেলবেন। কিন্তু আমার তেমন সম্ভাবনা ছিল না। তবে ভালো ক্রিকেটার না হলেও ভালো ছেলে হিসেবে পরিচিত ছিলাম। খুব ডিসিপ্লিনড, সবকিছু মেনে চলতাম। আমার মনে হতো, কোথাও সামান্য ফাঁকি দিলেও আমি হয়তো জাতীয় দলে খেলতে পারব না!

বিকেএসপি ছাড়ার সময় আমি স্পিনটা ভালোই খেলতাম। কিন্তু পেস বলে দুর্বল ছিলাম। কাট ছাড়া পেসে কোনো শট খেলতে পারতাম না। আমার মূল উন্নতিটা হয় বিসিবির একাডেমিতে এসে। একাডেমির ক্যাম্পে তখন ইমরান, সালাউদ্দিন, জুয়েল স্যাররা সুনির্দিষ্ট করে সবার দুর্বলতা চিহ্নিত করেছিলেন এবং সেটা নিয়ে কাজ করেছিলেন। অনেক উন্নতি হয় তখন আমার। পরের বছর আবার একাডেমির ক্যাম্প, তখন একাডেমির কোচ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার রস টার্নার। রসও খুব ভালো কাজ করেছিলেন।

ইমরান স্যার ও রস টার্নারের দুটি ক্যাম্পই খুব কাজে দিয়েছিল। ওই দুটি ক্যাম্প থেকেই আজ জাতীয় দলের অনেক তরুণ ক্রিকেটার এসেছেন—আমি, নাসির, বিজয়, সাব্বির, মুক্তার, মিঠুন...।

রস টার্নারের ক্যাম্পটি ছিল অনেক কঠিন। শুরুতে ছিল ফিটনেস ক্যাম্প। সকালজুড়ে ছিল কঠোর ফিটনেস ট্রেনিং, এরপর এক ঘণ্টার থিওরি ক্লাস। ফিটনেস ট্রেনিংয়ের এক মাস ব্যাটিং-বোলিং নিষিদ্ধ ছিল। কিন্তু সবাই যখন বিশ্রাম নিত, আমি অল্প একটু বিশ্রাম নিয়েই দুপুরে লুকিয়ে লুকিয়ে পেছন দিয়ে চলে যেতাম ইনডোরে, ব্যাটিং করতে। তত দিনে আমার টনক নড়ে গেছে, বুঝে গেছি অনেক পেছনে আছি। বাড়তি খাটুনির বিকল্প নেই। সাকিব, তামিম ভাইদের সঙ্গে কথা বলতাম সুযোগ পেলেই। তাঁরা বলতেন, ‘আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেট আরও অনেক অনেক কঠিন।’ শুনে আমি আরও বেশি পরিশ্রম করতাম। অনেকেই হাসাহাসি করত আমার খাটাখাটনি নিয়ে, টিপ্পনী কাটত। মন খারাপ হতো, তবে জানতাম, ভালো করলে তারাই আবার বলবে যে এত খেটেছে বলেই উন্নতি হয়েছে। এখন তারা ঠিকই বলে যে ‘মুমিনুল সারা দিন ব্যাটিং করত, উন্নতি তো হবেই!’

সালাউদ্দিন স্যার সব সময়ই আমাকে বলতেন, পুল ভালো খেলতে না পারলে আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেট খেলার দরকার নেই। জাতীয় দলের ব্যাটসম্যানদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে শুনতাম যে সব দলই আমাদের বিপক্ষে শর্ট বল করে বেশি। আমি তাই পুল নিয়ে কাজ করলাম, ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা। মনে আছে, একপর্যায়ে তিন মাস আমি শুধু পুল শটই খেলেছি! সালাউদ্দিন স্যারের অবদান এখানে না বললেই নয়। বিকেএসপি থেকে শুরু করে একাডেমি হয়ে এখনো স্যার অনেক সাহায্য করেন।

যাহোক, আমি পরিশ্রম করে যাচ্ছিলাম। রস টার্নার বলতেন, ‘ইনডোরে মুমিনুল তো সারা দিন ব্যাটিং করে।’ আমি উন্নতিটা বুঝতে পারলাম যখন দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা একাডেমি দল এল এখানে। বেশ কজন বোলার ছিল তাদের, যারা ১৪০ কিমি. গতিতে বোলিং করত। ভালোই করলাম তাদের বিপক্ষে। আমি আর বিজয় (এনামুল হক) তখন পাল্লা দিয়ে রান করত চাইতাম। বিজয় যখন ফিফটি করে ব্যাট তুলল, আমি গিয়ে বললাম, আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটে এটা ২৫! সেঞ্চুরি করতে হলে তাই ২০০ করতে হবে। বিজয় ১৭০ করে আউট হলো। আমি বললাম, ৮৫ করেছ!’ আমরা আবার একাডেমি দলের হয়ে দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকায় গেলাম। সেখানে আমি ১০০ ও ৮০ করলাম। বিজয় তখন বলল, আসলে সেঞ্চুরি হয়নি। আমরা ওভাবেই ভাবতাম, আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটই ছিল আমাদের মাথায়। ওই দুটি সিরিজে বুঝলাম আমার উন্নতি কিছু হয়েছে। এরপর সাকিব ভাইয়ের চোটে ২০১২ সালের নভেম্বরে আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটে অভিষেক। পরের গল্পটা সবারই জানা।

সাফল্যের পথে কেবল হাঁটা শুরু হয়েছে বলতে পারি। কছু রান পেয়েছি বলেই হয়তো এত আগ্রহ, এত প্রত্যাশা। যেমন আমি টেস্টে ফিফটি করলে কেউ খেয়ালও করে না, সেঞ্চুরি চায় সবাই। এটা একটা চাপ, তবে একদিক থেকে ভালোও আমার জন্য। জানি বড় কিছু করতে হবে। আমি সেঞ্চুরি করেও ব্যাট তুলতে চাই না, হেলমেট খুলতে চাই না। ভেতর থেকে আসে না, মনে হয় এতে আত্মতৃপ্তি চলে আসতে পারে। ভালো কিছুর তো শেষ নেই! সব ঠিক থাকলে অন্তত ৪০ বছর বয়স পর্যন্ত খেলতে চাই। ক্যারিয়ার শেষে যদি দেখি টেস্ট গড় ৫০ থেকে ৬০, ওয়ানডে গড় ৪০-এর ওপর, হয়তো নিজেকে কিছুটা সফল বলতে পারি।

দেশের হয়ে খেলা, ভালো কিছু করার তাগিদটাই সবচেয়ে বড় অনুপ্রেরণা। আমার আরেকটা বড় অনুপ্রেরণা আমার মা। মা এখন অসুস্থ হয়ে বিছানায়। কিছু করতে পারেন না, তবে সব অনুভব করতে পারেন। আমি রান করলে খুব ভালো থাকেন, চেহারায় খুশির আভা থাকে। রান না করলে মন খারাপ থাকে তাঁর। মায়ের মুখে হাসি ফোটানোর জন্য সব সময় রান করতে ইচ্ছা হয়। আমি ব্যাটিংয়ে নামলে বাবা বাড়িময় অস্থির পায়চারী করেন, টিভি দেখতে ভয় পান। এর-ওর কাছে জিজ্ঞেস করেন আমার রান। ছোট বোন ফোন করে বলে, ‘ভাইয়া, সাঙ্গাকারার মতো ধীরেসুস্থে ব্যাট করতে পারো না, তাড়াহুড়ো কেন করো!’ মজা লাগে। আমি বাড়ি ফিরলে অসুস্থ শরীরেও মা বাইরে এসে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকেন। আমাকে জড়িয়ে ধরে যে হাসিটা দেন, মনে হয় ওই হাসিটা দেখার জন্য দুনিয়ার সবকিছু জয় করতে পারি। আমার পরিবার, আমার দেশ আমার অনুপ্রেরণা।

I have been told to write something on my start and success (Sports). I DO NOT think I have succeeded on anything. I haven't achieved something great. My career is just starting. However, the way people have faith in me and expects me to perform, may be I did something after all. Although I do not think this as a success. I can talk about my start though.

Looking back, often a picture comes to my mind. Holding on to the railing in the gallery of the Chittagong Stadium with my friend Arif. I was either 13 or 14. BKSP camp was going on the ground. On looking and thinking, "if I could be in the camp..."

We live in Boidorkona of Cox-bazar. But use to play at Boillopara C & B colony field. Use to play with tape tennis. I use to play with straight bat from the very beginning. Use to follow the basic. It came to me naturally and didn't play "Ulta-palta" (cannot translate) shots. Big brothers (seniors) would come to see me play. Had I played a lofted shot, they would yell at me, "you don't need to play those shots. Play with a straight bat, that is what we like to see." My older brother Shaon bhai, other brothers use to tell me all the time. That had stuck with me from then.

The games were at the colony field, often would hit the nearby house windows, would hit passers by. People use to complain endlessly. One time few of them got fedup and called the police. We were stunned. They identified Forhad bhai and said, "This is the ring leader, coach, get him." With Forhad bhai, the police took our stumps, bat everything. Just to scare us, . They let him go after a while. We got scared a little but that didn't stop us. We started back the next day with even more determination.

Our local matches use to very competitive. We use to play among ourselves 2/3 matches before there was a real match. Our team was selected on the performance of those practice matches. Come to think of it, playing under pressure must have been instilled during those years. Seriously playing cricket or playing for the national team didn't come in to my mind. It came only while looking at the BKSP camp. Going to watch the camp at the "Jilla stadium", I thought may be I can try. Heard next year there will be another camp. Started to count my days.

Year around the day for camp came. Gave the exam. Saw those who tried to hit 4s and 6s were out. I naturally play low with the straight bat. Watching me a little they selected me for the one month camp. Did good in that camp. BKSP coach Nasir Sir suggested to sit for the BKSP exam. I conveyed the message and no one in the house approved it. First I convinced Shaon bhai. Then coach convinced dad. Dad convinced Mom. My parents took me to BKSP for the test. My mother was almost in a nervous breakdown. Watching her tensed up I made mistake in filling out the form. She got on to me then. Anyways, everything was done. But even before the test I was disqualified.

The least required height was 4 feet 10 inches. I was 4 feet 7. We requested a lot but all was went in vain. We three, disappointed, started back towards home. Dad said, "no problem, Will take the test next year." There was a notion back then that one can grow (height) by bicycling. On our way back at Cox-bazar, Dad got me 2,600 taka worth a bicycle. Cycling began. Next year, went back to give the test, height was 5 feet. Easily got admitted at BKSP.
To tell you the truth, I wasn't that good at BKSP. After couple of days, we all knew Nasir would play for the national team. I didn't have much prospect. Although I wasn't known as a good cricketer but everyone knew I was a goody two shoes (lol - ektu rog lagailam). Very disciplined, would follow all the rules. I thought if I try to cut-short, may be, I won't make it to the national team.

While leaving BKSP, I could play the spin well. But was weak against pace. Except the cut shot I couldn't play any other shot. My improvement happened at the BKSP academy. Academy camp had Imran, Salahuddin, Jewel Sirs who pointed out my weak areas and I started working on those with them. I had a vast improvement there. Next year again at the academy camp. The coach was Ross Turner. Ross also did an excellent job.

Imran Sir and Ross Turner's both camps helped me tremendously. Many in today's national team came from those camp. Me, Nasir, Bijoy, Shabbir, Mutkar, Mithun....

Ross Turner's camp was very hard. At first it was fitness camp. All morning we had fitness training, then one hour of theory class. At the fitness training, first month, batting-bowling was BANNED. But when everyone was resting, I took a little rest and afternoon, I sneaked out from the back to the indoor facility to practice batting. By that time, I already understood how far behind I was. There is no alternative of extra practicing. I would talk to Shakib, Tamim bhais' when I had chance and they would say, "International cricket is far more harder." Listening to them I use to work even harder. Many would laugh at me. They would make fun (jokes) of me. But I knew, when I would do good, these would the same people who would say he worked so hard that is why he is having success. Now they all say, "Mominul use to bat all day, he was bound to succeed."

The article is really long and so I will try to do the summary. So for sure the real emotion will be lost in my poor attempt but here it goes --

I was asked to write about my beginning and success. But I don't think I have achieved any success yet but I can write about my beginning.

I first saw BKSP camp in Cox's Bazar Stadium when I was 13 or 14. I thought to myself if I could be part of that. That's my earliest memory.

Even as a kid, I used to play with straight bat in our local street games. My elders also encouraged me to play like that. We used to have local tournaments and it was competitive and I believe my ability to perform under pressure started with that.

Next year BKSP camp came into our town again. I took the exam and immediately got in for the month long camp. The teachers advised me to enroll full time in BKSP and after convincing my family I decided to do so. So we traveled from Coxs Bazar to BKSP for the entrance exam.

But I was disqualified even before the exam. The minimum height requirement was 4'10 and I was 4'7 at that time. I was disappointed and the way back home my father bought me a bicycle. I began cycling and next year I grew to 5'0 and got into BKSP easily.

Honestly speaking, I was not that good in BKSP. Nasir Hossain in our class and we all knew he would play for national team someday. I realized I have to work extra hard to make it to national team.

After BKSP, I was good at playing spin but was weak against pace. I could play only few shots. But I improved a lot in the BCB academy. Next year I improved further under Imran and Ross Turner's camp.

Turner's camp was very hard. We had fitness camps but when everyone used to rest, I would sneak into indoor facilities and practice for hours. By that time I realized how far behind I am and I have no option but to practice and practice. I would talk to Tamim and Shakib bhai whenever I saw them. People used to laugh at me saying I am working too hard. But I knew one day they will I became successful because of that hard work.

I was weak in pull shots so I practiced that for 3 months in a row. I realized my improvement against the visiting SA team that had some good pacers. Me and Anamul used to compete for runs.

I feel like I have just started on the road to success. I don't feel like raising bat after century. It just doesn't come for me. Because there is no end to good. If everything works for me, I want to play till I am 40. I want to finish test career with an avg between 50 and 60, and ODI average 40+. Only then maybe I can say I am somewhat successful.

Salahuddin Sir always use to tell me, "You don't need to play International cricket if you can't play the pull shot." While talking to the national team players, they would say all teams bowls short to us a lot. So I worked on my pull, hours after hours. I can remember, at one time, for three months straight, all I played was the pull shot. Salauddin Sir's debt must be mentioned here. From the time of BKSP, to the academy, and even now, he has helped me greatly.

Anyways, I kept on working hard. Ross Turner said, "Mominul works on the indoor all day long." I first noticed my improvement against SA academy team who came with few bowlers who could bowl 140km. Did well against them. I and Bijoy wanted to score runs and keep tabs. When Bijoy made a 50 and held his bat up, I went and said to him, "International cricket standards this a 25. To score a century, you have score a 200." Bijoy got out at 170. I said, "You scored 85." We again went to SA with the Academy team. There I scored 100 and 80. Bijoy said, "Actually you didn't score a 100." That is how our thought process worked. We use to dream about International Cricket. In those two series I found out some of my improvements. Then Shakib bhai got hurt in 2012 November and my baptism in International Cricket happened. The rest everyone knows.

I can say I have started to walk the journey of success. I got some runs and may be that is why the interest/expectation is so high. Like if I score a 50 in Test, no one cares. They all expect a 100. This is a pressure but in one way, it is good on me. I know I have to do something big. I don't want to raise my bat after a century. I don't want to take off my helmet. It doesn't come from within. Feel like self-satisfaction may settle in. There is no end in doing something good. If everything goes well I want to play till I am 40. At the end of my career, if I see my test average is between 50 and 60, oneday average above 40, may be then I would think I had success.

To play for the country, to do something good is the biggest inspiration. My another huge inspiration is my Mother. She is sick and bed ridden. Can't do much but can sense everything. When I score runs she remains well, her face becomes bright, full of happiness. Not scoring runs make her sad. To see her smile I want to score runs all the time. When I bat, Dad starts to tensely pace the entire house, is afraid to watch the TV. Asks others my score. Absolutely. Whether he succeeds and becomes a superstar or not remains to be seen. But at the very least his way of thinking is very different from our other players. He doesn't feel like celebrating after a ton realizing he can do much more. He thinks he still didn't achieve anything. But most importantly, he never blames the system but talks about his own weakness (pace bowling, pull shot, not being good at BKSP) and worked very hard to rectify it. While our other players such SN, Aftab, Rokibul always solely blames the system.

They seem to be very hungry for runs and know the challenges of international cricket. Could you bring up where they said that? I dont remember Aftab or Raqibul complaining about the system. Well Raqibul retired but that was an issue with Lotus Kamal. I do remember SN complaining a bit about the system though.

In 2007 Aftab (Batsman Aftab Ahmed received an official caution for the same offence. Then in 2008 gave his resignation letter to BCB for ICL. He wasn't old like Bashar, Rafiq or newcomers like Dhiman, Farhad Reza but very much a regular established national player by then. SN complains about running fitness work during camps and was reprimanded by coach. The coach even had to send him home from the A tour in India.

I don't want to derail the thread by discussing those guys. Mominul is an exception who realizes his own shortcomings and works extra hard and does that extra mile. That is very unlike our other players.
