Default Bangladesh to Host 2011WC Opening Ceremony

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/5160396.stm

Kapil Dev
Indian fans will hope to see a repeat of their team's 1983 win
India will stage the Cricket World Cup final for the first time in 2011, the organisers have agreed.

They were confirmed as co-hosts of the event with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at this week's International Cricket Council conference in London.

Pakistan hosted the final the last time the World Cup was played in Asia 10 years ago.

But Pakistan and Sri Lanka will stage semi-finals in 2011, with the opening ceremony taking place in Bangladesh.

"It has been decided that all four should evenly play a part in hosting the major events of the tournament," said Pakistan Cricket Board director Abbas Zaidi.

The Asian bid was preferred to a joint application from Australia and New Zealand for the 2011 showpiece.

And officials have already expressed their determination to make it the best World Cup in the tournament's history.

"Traffic will come to a stop in the four countries in 2011. There will be more than a billion (TV) viewers in the sub-continent, and another billion in the rest of the world," India's Inderjit Singh Bindra has said.

India will stage 22 matches, Pakistan 16, Sri Lanka nine and Bangladesh six.

Among the potential venues for the final would be Eden Gardens in Calcutta, which has a capacity of 90,000, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai (Bombay), the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, or the Feroz Shaha Kotla in Delhi.

Never mind thebest, ICC will be providing a portion of the expense for the opening ceremony. And we are not going to develope the country by overnight if we dont invest some money for this event, are we? We have already lost millions of taka for corruptions, so what is wrong organizing this event? I will say it is an investment rather than an expense.

If you look at todays newspapers then you will see Biman officials are spending huge amount of money for their foreign tour for no reason. Should I say anything? Shame.

Great news !!! Holding the ceremony successfully will lift our image and hosting the world cup would mean a boost to our economy albeit a small one due to the number of matches.

It's very prestigeous to get this oppurtunity to host the world cup. Not only it'll brighten our image, it'll also give us some cultural boost in world culture.

very happy to hear that we are hosting the opening ceremony and the first match. i hoped we would get to host the final but i guess thats too far out of reach for us. specially when india and pakistan are also co-hosting the world cup with us. now i just hope that we can be a contender to win the world cup by 2011. i think its very possible to take our team to that level in next 5 years. but we are still far away from reaching that level.

It's really a great news, but it was expected. The opening ceremony should be in BNS, of course.
First: it's a prestigious event, which will take place in the bigger stadium and at the centrer of the city.
Second: the pitches of Mirpur Stadium should not be damaged by the performers before the important WC matches.
Third: We want the BNS back for Cricket, and let it be step no.1, if not more.
Fourth: This will make the event for everyone, irrespective of forms of sports and will be looked as a matter of pride for the whole nation.

This is great news for BD, I just hope BCB will do a good job at planning and executing this event. Also good to know BD will be playing in the first match, let's hope our team will improve by then and win.

im excited but not so sure abt this. all of u guys saw those programs in BNS for independence day or victory day. they are not that good. i know its bigger but, bd people dont think outside the box, especially those people in the office. So i have doubts in my mind how well they can pull it off!

Well, little less money will go to politician's pocket atleast. Then again, khaleda-hasina will make sure they can rip off the ICC fund also. that is for sure.
