Default BCB defends Tigers

The Bangladesh Cricket Board boss has denied that the national team cricketers could not perform well as they enjoyed an overnight concert and attended a kebab party before two of their World Cup matches.

"It's totally wrong," A H M Mostafa Kamal told reporters after a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on sports ministry on Thursday.

Committee chairman Mohammad Zahid Ahsan Rasel in the committee's last meeting on Apr 21 had said the Tigers were suffering from stomach-upset following a kebab party they had attended ahead of their humiliating defeat against South Africa.

He also claimed the players also watched an overnight concert before the match against West Indies.

The BCB chief said: "Bangladesh won against Ireland in their match after the concert on Feb 24."

He also said it was not the BCB's duty to oversee what the players were doing, but of the team management's. "As the president, my duty is to keep the system in place. We're successful in organising the event," he said.

Bangladesh co-hosted the month-long event along with India and Sri Lanka.

Kamal claimed the players did well. "There's fifty percent success — we outplayed in three matches out of six."

The tigers were under fire after they were bundled out for just 58 runs by the West Indies. Later, South Africa bowled them out for just 78.

Asked about the low scores, he said: "Pakistan and Sri Lanka also suffered the same setback. I don't expect better performance in such a short period."

But he said he was sad that Tigers failed to reach the quarterfinals.

BCB is NOT defending the tigers - it is only defending itself and deflecting blame elsewhere.

The bigger issue is why are our national cricketers allowed to roam around on the eve of these big games and do not have a strictly enforced curfew? Professional teams all over the world have strict pre-game disciplinary measures which are strictly enforced. Yes, by the coach but the coach is also publicly supported by the management.

There is something seriously wrong here. Not just with the coaching and management but with the players in their cavalier attitude. They have a long way to go before they can call themselves professional athletes. All they are right now are spoilt-rotten pampered cry-babies. At least a bunch of them are.

It's probably not the best idea to be goofing off the night before a game, especially during a once in four years event. We had the same problems with Andrew Symonds. Team rules and team solidarity have to respected. Whoever sanctioned this outing is a bit of a dill. The WC is a hard core tournament and you can't afford to take it lightly, especially if, like BD, you have to be at your best to progress further than the group stages. Slack effort, and it will be another four years before these guys get another shot. There's plenty of time to party afterwards.

We are having the 'Bangla guy' situation before the worldcup all over again... every single news article doesn't need a new thread, it would be a lot more interesting if thread openers would actually read the article and then provide their input/key points to generate some form of discussion

The players need an Army Drill sergeant. And what can I say about BCB? এই ডারউইনের বাচ্চা বান্দরগুলি কোনদিন মানুষ হবেনা।

Well let the players live a little, their lives are not solely based on cricket, they do have friends, families and they deserve to enjoy life. On the other hand, 2 am is to late for any job, be it in a office, or a cricket match. Cricketers do not live and breath cricket, they just play it, and they try their best...

The players are human being. There is nothing wrong with going to parties. To be frank their personal life is not a matter as long as it does not have an impact on their professional life.

and you think the over night party had no effect on their professional life? Remember 78 and 58?
