Ash is now the 2nd most run scorer among the Deshi players so far. JS is leading. Shakib is 3rd.

Over all only 3 BD players in top 15.

Last couple of innings he did good. However he is not even in top 10 in Ave (Bangladeshi only).

In the national team it was JS, now I wonder who is keeping his favourite pupil out of the team. He bowled decently in the one game he got. 2/21 v Rajshahi.

BD players are making a comeback in the tournament which is good to see. Mominul's innings was one of the best in the tournament so far when you factor in the pressure and the opponents and the fact that he stayed till the end to ensure that his team won. Like I said, he seems to have a knack for scoring in the big games.

Good to see that 6 out of 10 players among the Top 10 wicket-takers are Bangladeshi. Mashrafe, even though he isn't in the Top 10, has been fantastic. This has not been a pacer's season so far but Mashrafe's econ. rate (6.63) is at par with some of the SLAs. Excellent achievement given that he bowls most of his overs with fielding restrictions. Sohail Tanvir is the only other pacer with an econ. rate below 7. Among the spinners, Enam Jr. has surprised me. 9 wickets in 6 games, didn't think he would perform in this format. Razzak with 9 wickets and an econ. rate of under 6 has proven that he isn't done. While Arafat Sunny has been the best among the lesser known lot.

Happy with Day 1
by Raynman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If Day 1 was any indication, I think the BPL will be very good for Bangladesh.

1. A century in spectacular fashion by Gayle
2. A 200+ score by Kings
3. Some good performance from the local boys : Mullah, Kapali
4. Decent totals put up by both losing teams

All this should attract bigger names in the future and if BPL can land a team in the Champions League, things will be brighter.

I'm hoping the BD boys will learn how to play scoring shots and bowl according to situation by practicing and playing with their international team mates.

The only thing that was a bit hard to take was lack of Deshi bowlers on display. But its understandable given the quality we have at the moment.

Midpoint Review : Team by Team Key points
by Raynman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a listing of the midpoint analysis of the teams so far. This should provide a one stop shop to look up performances for teams and individuals. Took a while to go over all the scoreboards and stats so I'll enter conclusion comments when I get a chance later in a seperate post.

Chittagong Kings:

- 4-1 record
- Only hiccup against Dhaka setting 153
- Set first 200 total (206/4 vs. Rajshahi)
- Best bowling effort (reduced Barisal to 125/6 and chased down in 12.4 overs)
- Highest Total successfully chased (171 vs. Khulna)
- Mahmadullah has been great as captain and stepping up with the bat when needed (113 runs from 4 innings including 2 not outs and a 56* and SR 152.70). Also useful with the ball vs. Khulna (3-0-18-2). In 11 overs at 6.27, he is also the most economical bowler
- Star batsman for Chittagong has been Nasir Jamshed with 261 in 5 innings including 3 50’s
- JJ Roy 127 from 4 innings
- Disappointment, although 1 match and injured : Icon player Tamim Iqbal 3(7)
- Enamul Haque Jr. and D. Bravo have been the highest wicket takers (6 apiece)
- Best Strike Rate : Ziaur Rahman (2 innings, 2 not outs, 62 runs from 40 balls : 155.00 SR). Involved in 100+ partnership with Mahmadullah vs. Sylhet after team was 45-3
- Another disappointment WK/Batsman Jahurul Islam : After successful DPL , 86 runs in 5 innings. Only notable innings was vs. Barisal 41 (21) but in a chase of 125

Dhaka Gladiators:

- 3-2 record
- Reduced Sylhet to lowest score of tournament to date 124 ao
- Posted highest innings total (208/5 vs. Barisal)
- Elias Sunny 4-0-17-3 vs. Chittagong has best figures in a match in the tournament to date Also produce 4-1-18-2 vs. Rajshahi. Sunny has most wickets (7) in the tournament and economy of 6.08
- Imran Nazir (153 runs in 5 innings at 146.61 SR) , K. Pollard (141 runs in 4 innings with 2 no at 148.42 SR) and D. Stevens (114 in 5 innings with 3 not outs at 117.52) have been holding up the batting
- Mash had two back to back good matches 4-0-22-2 vs. Sylhet and 4-0-20-2 vs. Barisal (which featured a Gayle century). Nothing noteworthy about the captaincy though.
- Anamul Haque had a flashy 48(39) vs. Sylhet but he has been non-existent otherwise
- Mosharrof Hossain has best economy of 6.00 (90 runs in 15 overs) for Dhaka

Duronto Rajshai:

- 3-2 record
- On a 3 game win streak after dropping first 2
- M. Sami (4-0-23-3) and Monir Hussain (4-0-22-2), both vs. Dhaka are only notable bowling performance
- Conceded 206 to Chittagong and 180 to Barisal in first two matches
- M. Samuels (126 runs at 123.52) and Mushfiqur Rahim (112 at 130.23) are the notable run getters
- Mushfiq has stepped it up as both captain and batsman after the first 2 losses
- Sami is highest wicket taker with 6 as well as the holder of the only hat-trick against Dhaka
- Excluding Monir Hossain’s 5.5 economy vs. Dhaka, Samuels is most economical bowler for Rajshahi at 6.55
- Junaid Siddique has the best SR of 167.69 for his 109 runs in 5 innings (Top Bangladeshi on the SR list)

Khulna Royal Bengals

- 2-2 record
- Alternating wins and losses vs. Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal and Rajshahi
- Shakib has been solid as captain, batsman and bowler in both wins 42(31) and 4-0-25-1 vs. Dhaka, 4-1-19-2 and 5* vs. Barisal and questionable in the loss to Chittagong (defending 171 and only bowling 4 overs between himself and Abdur Razzak who had figures of 2-0-11-0 and 2-0-7-2 respectively). Gave a solid performance vs. Rajshahi ( helped reach a defendable total of 145 44(26) when top order collapsed and couldn’t do enough with the ball 4-0-35-2 in a close match)
- Highest total 175 vs. Dhaka
- D. Smith (151 at 133.62) and S. Chanderpaul (109 at 110.10) are the only batsmen to cross 100 runs
- Abdur Razzak’s 6.3 economy ranks best with Shakib closely behind at 6.42
- A. Russel leads wicket takers with 6 followed by Shakib at 5
- Shakib’s 150.79 SR is the best for Khulna
- Most expensive Bangladeshi Nasir Hussain (minus the icons of course) has not has a chance to showcase much with the bat (2 innings, 46 runs, 1 not out, 115.00 SR) and has been on and off with ball (1-0-2-1, 2-0-35-0, 3-0-25-0 and 2-0-12-1)
- Shafiul Islam had one bright spot in Barisal win (3-0-7-2) but nothing noteworthy otherwise

Barisal Burners

- 2-3 record
- Blazing wins to start off and cooled down with 3 straight losses
- Chased 165 against Sylhet in opening match down in 13.1 overs for no loss at a 12.68 RR
- Gayle, Gayle, all Gayle (2 centuries, 26 6’s, 116 HS, 288 runs in 5 innings, 2 not outs, 96 average, 186.01 SR) Unfortunately for BB and BPL, his 2012 engagement is over due to contractual obligation in SA and even more unfortunately, his stint ended with a groin injury, forcing a retired hurt in his final innings
- Ahmed Shehzad has been the other batsman holding Barisal afloat (137 runs at 147.31SR)
- Another crucial injury for Barisal is S. Harwood (7.2-0-40-3 in 2 matches) who had best economy in tournament at 5.45
- Y. Arafat has 6 wickets, most by a Burner
- Icon/captain S. Nafees has been disappointing by keeping himself down the order and not stepping up fearlessly as a captain should

Sylhet Royals

- 0-4 record
- Only winless team and only team captained by a non-Bangladeshi (Trego). [If I understand correctly, Kapali refused captaincy and Trego volunteered]
- Promising start to tournament with 165 vs. Barisal before the Gayle storm hit and they have yet to recover
- P. Trego (159) leads the runs but not with a good SR (108.16). K. Akmal (118) and Kapali (114) round out the 100 club
- Kapali leads SR with 142.5.
- Key Bangladeshi players Kayes (66 runs in 4 innings at 137 SR ; interestingly 36 of those runs coming from 6’s) hasn’t capitalized and Naeem and Shubhagato Hom have been rarely utilized
- S. Tanvir has 4 wickets with Kapali and Trego with 3
- Nabil Samad in 12 overs remains only bowler with <6 economy at 5.91
- Trego’s captaincy seems lacking as he seems to have little faith in his team-mates. Trego bowling 11.2 overs at 9+ is a bit concerning
- BBL star Hogg has failed to deliver

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One alarming item has been the importance given to allrounders by all team owners and the lack of interest to specialist bowlers (both national and international). There really are very few TRUE all rounders and using them to fill the bowling over specialized bowlers doesn't make sense.

In T20, you should build a team where more often than not, the top 6 batsmen can bat the 20 overs.

It was a shock that Nannes didn't get bid for and its annoying that even international bowlers are being sent up the order to bat before the recognized Bangladeshi batsmen. (of course I blame the captain the team management for this).

Team Review : Sylhet Royals
by Raynman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Sylhet now mathematically eliminated from the tournament, here is a review of the team so far. Things may change in the last 3 games but at this point anything noteworthy will be meaningless due to lack of pressure involved. So I think this review is timely and can be considered their season ending review.

Record:
0-7 / 6th position

Captaincy:

Kapali refused the captaincy initially and Trego volunteered. Trego, though performing better than most on this team, overused himself inappropriately in both batting and bowling and eventually faced the axe not only as the captain but player as well after losing the first half of their matches. Kapali took over for one match to only watch his contribution disappear and the following game introduced Imrul Kayes as the next to lead the team to yet another defeat.

Team Stats:

- Posted lowest total to date at 120/7 vs. Barisal
- Broke 150 four out of seven tries
- Max of 169/8 vs. Khulna
- Were all out once at 124 vs. Dhaka.
- Closest defeat : 2 runs vs. Khulna chasing 171
- Largest defeat : 10 wickets to Barisal in tournament opener
- 6 50’s limited to 3 batsmen

Batting:

(note: assuming 150 to be a benchmark team total, 125 SR would be the corresponding benchmark)

- K. Akmal is the only noteworthy batsman with 226 runs in 7 innings at a 144.87 rate
- Kapali is only other batsman with 125+ SR with 118 runs in 6 innings at 129.67 (excluding Maynard and Noor Hossain due to playing only 1 innings and facing less than 10 balls each)
- Trego has 196 runs at 107.1 SR. This was a big issue for Sylhet as he faced more balls than anyone else (183 balls. 2nd was Akmal with 156)
- Imrul Kayes is the only other batsman to cross 100 runs (102 at 114.6)
- Surprises were the lack of use of Styris (only 4 matches despite being a handy all rounder) and playing Hom and Naeem down the order with no one but Akmal being able to justify their position up the order
- 6’s : Akmal 9, Kayes 7, Styris/Kapali 5

Bowling:

(note : Using 150 benchmark, 7.5 is the economy marker between good and bad)

- Only S. Tanvir (6.45) and B. Hogg (6.76) managed to keep their economy rate decent. Nabil Samad at 7.59 is on the borderline.
- S. Tanvir is also leading wicket taker with 6 followed by Trego at 5
- Trego bowled 17.2 overs (Only regulars Tanvir (22), Hogg (26) and Samad (22) bowled more).
- Next used bowler was Kapal (a total of 5 overs)!!!
- Rubel played only one match (injury) and bowling skills of Naeem and Styris were practically not used at all
- Kapali’s 3/27 vs. Rajshahi is the best figures by a bowler
- Concerns : Kapali’s figures in that match came at a 13.5 economy rate and Trego’s 17.2 overs went at 10.5 an over

International vs. Domestic:

- Failures all around with Akmal being the only exception
- Nabil Samad was the only Bangladeshi bowler really given a go with the ball
- Trego makes his presence in stats but his SR and economy rates were more detrimental than a bright spot
- Kapali had some moments but nothing to write home about

Overall, I think the team could have done better with the talent they had. Leadership was lacking and a major concern. Naeem should have been tried higher up the order and bowled more. Playing Styris in only 4 matches demonstrated poor selection. Rubel played only one match and his presence may have helped in the bowling side but that may have removed Samad from the picture who didn’t do so bad. Kayes and Kapali both demonstrated hitting abilities but failed to make them last or count.

It’s a shame for any team in the BPL to be out of the Semi Final running this early given there are only 6 teams. Team management will need to rethink team composition and look into picking more productive international players. This is a team that could have benefitted from the services of Nannes who went unsold in the auction. Captaincy is also something that needs to be looked into.

The record does not befit the team as it exists on paper. They started the tournament with a promising total to defend but were destroyed by a Chris Gayle onslaught and never recovered. The team in a way resembled everything that is wrong with the national team today (Bad shot selection, performance by only one or two players per game, individual stat padding, lack of planning etc) and with national coach Law at the helm of this team, this could be a concerning matter for Bangladesh Cricket.
