Default US Storm Sandy

I am surprised to see there is no thread on this - the most horrific storm in US history? How are the BC New Yorkers? Any personal experience?

Best of luck to everyone in NY/NJ

I just wanted to open one. But here it is.

East cost people, be safe.

I am on the inside layer of east coast and only seeing some rain and frozen rain, and some wind. Nothing major.

People of NY, NJ, PA, MD, VA and OH, be safe.

Hurricane Sandy in pictures

This link has some shocking pictures from NYC and other areas. I don't think anyone expected it to get as bad as it did.

Few of my colleagues I work with on daily basis are 'missing'. Missing in the sense that they are unable to contact us of their whereabouts - I guess that is due to having no power or phone.

Still no power. Its been 2 days already. My boss emailed and said office is flooded and now they are pumping out water. I am in the Masjid and surprisingly they have power. I am trying to work remotely from there. Its extremely bad where I live (Staten Island) and lower Manhattan. Please keep us in your prayers.

Here are few videos I took few hours before the main storm.

Outside of the apt.

Beginning of the storm. In the distance is the river. Its only 2 blocks down and we saw water creeping in

Not sure which one is more interesting in this picture... Blacked-out Manhattan skyline or the only building with all of its light on (as if nothing happened) is the Goldman Sachs building

Hope everyone on the East Coast is recuperating well. Also spare a thought for those in the Caribbean who were devastated by Sandy as well. I believe a hurricane is also set to hit Southern India. Bad times

Does anyone know how bad it was in Nassau county? Particularly areas like New Hyde Park and Franklin Square, Garden City? I've got family in NHP and a friend in FS and a neither responded to my texts a few days ago. My cousin in Brooklyn is fine but he also never responed when I asked about his family in NHP.

^ I think a lot of cell towers are still down. So that might be why you haven't heard from them.

I heard from my my cousin a lot of places in NYC are starting run out of gas. And the gas stations that do have it, line is crazy long.

Haha blocking entire intersections like a janwaar. Gotta love NYers total disregard for courtesy in traffic jams. Hated it a couple months ago when I got stuck on Delancey, Mott, Canal for almost 3 hours. Became an a-hole and started blocking interesections and cutting other people off myself.

Man, I miss being a New Yorker!

^ you lived in lower manhattan? I lived there last summer. Driving around the city during rush hour, it changes the way you drive. All of a sudden you find yourself like the yellow cab drivers honking at every tiny little things that piss you off.

No, I was crashing at an extended stay place on 94th street for half of the summer. Back in the South now. That chinatown jam I got stuck in was on my way back to Tennessee. I was heading for the Holland tunnel, but finally gave up as it took me 3 hours to get from the Williamsburg bridge to Canal still short of the tunnel. Ended up swinging back uptown to the GW and was in Jersey in 10 mins flat.

^ I drove that route the night after the storm and had a surreal experience. I was heading towards Verrazano bridge to get out of NYC as fast as I could but ended up taking the Williamsburg bridge exit by mistake. As I got on the bridge I realized I was the only one driving. It felt creepy, cuz I'd never seen Williamsburg bridge this empty. As I hit Delancy, it was pitch dark...none of the traffic lights were working...all of downtown was out of power. So I was looking to take a U turn and get the hell outta there, and then suddenly out of the blue, all these cars started rushing from many different directions, nobody following any traffic rules whatsoever. It was a scary sight. It felt like a bunch of werewolves being unleashed in the city of the underworld. I was almost certain I'd get into an accident and if I did, imagine the odds of any cop showing up in the forseeable future. Luckily though I got away unscathed, but I'll never forget that night's experience in Gotham city.

I heard cops are turning people away from entering NY back toward NJ if you don't have 3 people in your car. Is that true for all states border or just NJ?

That applies to all boroughs of NY as well. you just can't get into Manhattan if you don't have 3 people in your car. They have checkpoints at every bridges to make sure that you have 3 people. MTA bridges are exempt though..
