Default Computer Issues Thread

I'd like to open this thread for all BC members who have any computer issues so other, more techy BC members can help out.
Here's my problem:
I turned my computer on today and it claims that my Windows 7 is not genuine. I have build 7600. Can anyone help me fix this problem? I really don't want to reboot.

Well, obviously you have installed a cracked version of windows7.

But that's not the problem, the problem is you most likely have either auto-update configured where you are not prompted to install updates and it runs in the background. Or you manually installed all the updates recently. The specific update that verifies and patches cracked Windows7 is kb971033. So for future references, for you or anyones else, if you have a cracked Windows7 installed (regardless whatever the cracked version .info file say about it being immune to Genuine Advantage Check), make sure you don't have it configured to auto-update. Just manually update once a month and check individually to see if any of those updates are WGA updates and don't install them. Windows doesn't bundle these updates so there are separate from all other updates and easy to single out and ignore.

Now that you know why it happened and how to prevent it in the future, time to fix it.

You can try this method or use your google-fu.

the computer in my room keeps freezing when it shows the (energy star sign, the dell sign, F2=setup, F12=boot menu) after being turned on. I cant even click or press anything coz the mouse or keyboard wont respond. I tried unplugging it and replugging it but its still the same. This problem started about a month ago. Please help.

Below is a step by step description of what happened when I tried to re install Windows XP (authentic version provided by Dell, also tried other working copies that I have) on my Dell Vostro 1510--

Step 1)
When the computer was turned on, the Dell splash screen appeared and prompted me to select one of the following --
a) Windows XP Pro (currently existing version)
b) Windows XP Pro Setup (this is the default option, saved during installation I’m assuming)

Step 2)
i) If I selected option a) Windows XP Pro, the older version of Windows XP loaded. (so this option was of no interest since we’re trying to install a new version)

ii) When I selected option b) Windows XP Pro Setup, Windows Setup screen would appear and after running for 15-20 seconds the following message appeared-
"The file nvrd32.sys could not be found. Press any key to continue."

Step 3)
When I pressed any key I got the following message-
"Setup failed. Press any key to restart your computer"

Step 4)
When I restarted my computer, it took me back to Step 1.
If I selected option b) Windows XP Pro Setup, obviously I got the same result again and again.

That machine died on me last week and I’ve been unable to use it since. When I try to boot it, I get the “not enough resources to run” message. I’ve found a solution here but it seems like a painstaking and time consuming process. So I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions before I try and create an nvrd32.sys file manually, which I’m not looking forward to ….

So it is Java 6 and Oracle 11g, can any math guru project on this naming chain? What will happen in 3001 A.D. Will UNICODE be sufficient to capture that tail?

Java will be long obsolete by then. So no worries.

I am not so confident. But again when EFI hits the market who knows what is going to happen - I see the latest IPad to turn into a mainframe over night.

Downloaded a djvu file. Need to convert it to pdf file. Well, downloaded a converter but everytime I try to open the djvu file in Internet Explorer, it won't let me. It throws me off in a loop where it gives me the option if I want to open or save it and either option leaves me back to the same choice.....SMBL.

While watching World Cup saw that ad on Sony 3D TV's. Now what will happen when I will use that as a monitor and try to code a software. How will we design new applications for a 3-D monitor? Will there be programming languages that will be 3-D human computer interface enabled?

i have a problem. My laptop is staying dark even though everything else in the computer is functional. When I open my laptop screen, it lose 90% brightness. So if i hold it against bright light I see the contents in the screen. Sometime when I quickly open screen, i get the normal screen. I am guessing that the connector between the motherboard is getting loose or bad. Any suggestion?

All the symptoms match with problems related to screen inverter.

How is the Function+UP/DOWN Key combination working for you?

May be I am delayed and you already have the answer, but just out of curiousity I downloaded pdf2djvu from code.google.com then converted one of my pdf file. The only thing is I am using IE 7 and installed the ActiveX plugin for djvu. Well there is a Djvu viewer comes with the software that will open the djvu file. But it alos opened in IE, although initially gave a pop-up for blocked content. I just ok'd that and the new file opened smooth.

Took my laptop to a repair store in my campus. The inverter was fine, but the screen was bad. Luckily they had a junk laptop of the same model lying around. So the replacement + labor cost me $105. It seemed like a good deal, right?

I think the function up/down key works fine. Is this a diagnostic for the inverter?

I'm having some issue with my Itunes I'm wondering if someone can help me. I'm trying to burn a CD and I keep getting this error, "Disc burner or software not found". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, but no luck. And I tried googling but it all seems so confusing. Can someone please help me out?
