Problem for Australia is that they always have to play barrage with fifth South American team, so they don't have big chance to qualify.
I suppose it would be more appropriate to let them play in the asian zone, which is the weaker of football confederations.

Also in this qualifications I was surprised to see China going out at the first round. It was nice to see them for the first time at the world cup in 2002, and I thought they were going to be following the path of a team like South Korea through the years.
Now, missing world cup 2006 puts them ten years behind and leaves the world of football without the biggest nation (by population) until 2010.

Why not have an Australasia Zone and have 6 teams Qualify from there? That should give the Aussies a fair chance to qualify, and would warrant an even competetion.

Edit: sorry Xavier I didn't realize you made that post. I didn't mean to simply repeat what you said.

Not a problem at all, anyway I think 5 teams from "australasia" would be better, if you consider Africa only have five.

Well...Australia did have the opportunity of playing against Iran in the play-offs for 98 World Cup....But they found the Iranians too hot to handle....So I guess they have had a fair chance..They r just not good enough.....

Yes that's true, but they had a little bit of bad luck: they had a good result 1-1 in Teheran, then they got 2-0 in Sydney but Iran scored twice in the last 20 minutes.

I remember watching on tv barrage Australia-Argentina for Usa'94. It was 1-1 in Sydney before losing 1-0 in Buenos Aires, the South Americans were so scared they could miss qualification that they called back Diego Maradona for the second match!

I was not intended to start a dispute between the two of us, I just mean that football is a highly unpredictable sport and any kind of result can happen (last summer Italy lost to Island, just like if England would lose to Nepal in a cricket ODI) so you can never say never...
by the way there are news for Australia, they probably move to asian zone for 2010:

>>>>I think I have to make an adding to this post to make my opinion clear:

At last I do agree with you Shehwar: it is the verdict of the field what really counts. So if the Australians did not get to the WC since 1974 they simply deserved that, as we must say that if Greece won Euro 2004 it's because they fully deserved to win, altough nobody could say that on a general level Charisteas is better than Van Nistelrooy or Dellas better than Nesta.
It is the result of the game that counts... and that's what makes english fans so disappointed about team's competitions! lol
