Pollock fined for dissent

South African Shaun Pollock has been fined his entire match fee for showing dissent to an umpire during Tuesday's one-day game against Pakistan.
The punishment was handed out by match referee Clive Lloyd following comments made by Pollock to Darrell Hair.

"Umpires have a difficult enough task as it is and players must learn to respect their authority," said Lloyd.

Pollock's team-mate Mark Boucher also appeared before Lloyd but was cleared of using obscene language.

South Africa won the game in Faisalabad by 13 runs but trail 2-1 in the best-of-five series.

"We have so far witnessed three closely contested matches in front of big crowds and I hope that the rest of the series will be played in the right spirit by both sides," added Lloyd.

Offences under level 2.2 of the International Cricket Council's code of conduct also carry the possibility of a ban of one Test or two one-day internationals.

But after hearing evidence, Lloyd decided that a financial penalty was sufficient.

Pollock is a vastly experienced player, having appeared in 74 Tests and 201 one-day internationals since his debut eight years ago.

He was South African captain from April 2000 until he was sacked following South Africa's failure in the World Cup earlier this year.

Pakistan coach Javed Miandad has, meanwhile, urged his players to speed up in the field.

More fines

The captains of both teams were fined 20% of their match fees after Sunday's match in Lahore.

The other 20 players involved were all fined 10% of their pay cheque.

"If we don't find a solution and don't get more disciplined the over rates will start playing on our minds," said Miandad.

"In other countries maintaining the required over rate is part of their cricket culture from the grass root level and they don't face problems."
