It was a very good interview. He came from such a humble beginning and worked really hard. Really wonderful to see hard work paying off now!! Interview deserves its own thread.

টেস্ট বোলারের পরিচয়টা এমনভাবেই গায়ের সঙ্গে সেঁটে গিয়েছিল যে, দুটি বিপিএলেই তাঁকে কেনেনি কোনো ফ্র্যাঞ্চাইজি! শাপেবর হয়েছে সেটাই। ওই সময়টাতে নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করতে পেরেছেন সত্যিকারের পেস বোলার হিসেবে। বোলিংয়ে ক্লান্তি কখনোই ছিল না, এখন তো আরও নয়। গত পরশু হারারের হলিডে ইন হোটেলে নিজের রুমে তারেক মাহমুদকে দেওয়া সাক্ষাৎকারে জিম্বাবুয়ের বিপক্ষে ম্যান অব দ্য সিরিজ রবিউল ইসলাম বলেছেন তাঁর পেস বোলার হয়ে ওঠার গল্প

 প্রথম টেস্টে দুই ইনিংস মিলিয়ে ৫৭ ওভার বোলিং করলেন। এরপর দ্বিতীয় টেস্টে আরও ৫৩ ওভার। শরীরের অবস্থা কেমন?
রবিউল ইসলাম: শরীরের অবস্থা ভালো। বোলিং করার পর একটু তো ক্লান্তি লাগেই। তখন ম্যাসাজ করাই। নিজের খেয়াল রেখেছি। পানি-টানি বেশি খেয়েছি।

 এত বেশি বোলিং আগে কখনো করেছেন?
রবিউল: জাতীয় লিগে করেছি। গতবার আমাদের বলে দেওয়া হয়েছিল, এক দিনে ১৫ ওভারের বেশি বোলিং করতে পারব না। এর আগে এ রকম বাধ্যবাধকতা ছিল না। তখন দিনে ২৫-৩০ ওভারও করেছি। আসলে বোলিং করতে আমার কখনো ক্লান্তি লাগে না।

 পেসারদের তো সবারই প্রায় ইনজুরি সমস্যা। যাঁরা আছেন, তাঁদের পক্ষেও এ রকম টানা বোলিং হয়তো কঠিন হতো। অন্যদের সঙ্গে আপনার পার্থক্যটা আসলে কোথায়?
রবিউল: পেস বোলারদের টুকটাক ইনজুরি হয়ই। কিন্তু আমি ছোটখাটো কিছু হলে মাথায় নিই না। মানসিকভাবে সব সময় শক্ত থাকার চেষ্টা করি। অধিনায়ক যেন আমার ওপর বিশ্বাস রাখে, আমি যেন সেই বিশ্বাস রাখতে পারি—এটা মাথায় রাখি।

 কোচ শেন জার্গেনসেন বলেছেন, বিপিএলের সময় আপনি একাডেমিতে থেকে বোলিং নিয়ে অনেক পরিশ্রম করেছেন...
রবিউল: বিপিএলে দল না পাওয়ার পর ভাবলাম, বসে না থেকে কিছু একটা করি। সাতক্ষীরাতেই প্র্যাকটিস শুরু করলাম। তখনই একদিন শেন এসএমএস পাঠিয়ে বলল, ঢাকায় এসে একাডেমিতে থেকে প্র্যাকটিস করতে। সেখানে শেন ছিলেন, সঙ্গে রিচার্ড ম্যাকিন্স আর স্টুয়ার্ট কার্পিনেনও। পেসার মোট চার-পাঁচজন আসার কথা থাকলেও শেষ পর্যন্ত আমি একাই ছিলাম। শেন প্রথম তিন-চার দিন থেকে অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় চলে গেলেন। আমি প্র্যাকটিস করতাম ম্যাকিন্স আর কার্পিনেনের সঙ্গে। যেদিন হরতাল থাকত, ওরা না এলেও এসএমএস করে জানাত, কী করতে হবে। আমি একা একা বোলিং করতাম। একা একা জিম করতাম, রানিং করতাম।

 একা একা এসব করতে বিরক্ত লাগেনি?
রবিউল: এক দিনে ৮-১০ ওভার করে বোলিং থাকত, কোনো দিন ১৪-১৫ ওভারও। মাঝেমধ্যে বিরক্ত লাগত। তখন ভেবেছি, একটু ফাঁকি দিই। কিন্তু পরে ভাবতাম, ফাঁকি দিলে নিজেই ফাঁকিতে পড়ব। আর এটা তো আমার জন্য সুযোগ। জাতীয় দলের কোচ ডেকে এনে অনুশীলন করাচ্ছেন। তা ছাড়া আমি জাতীয় দলে খেলেছি কীভাবে? ইংল্যান্ডে খেলার পর প্রায় ১৪ মাস কোনো খেলা ছিল না। এরপর আবার জিম্বাবুয়েতে...এভ� �বেই খেলছি। বিপিএলেও সুযোগ পাইনি।

 বিপিএলের সময় খেলোয়াড়, কর্মকর্তা, কোচ—সবাই এ নিয়েই ব্যস্ত। ওই সময়টায় আপনি কিনা একা একা প্র্যাকটিস করলেন! কোনো দল আপনাকে নিলামে কিনল না। খারাপ লাগেনি?
রবিউল: প্রথম বিপিএলেও কিন্তু কোনো দল আমাকে কেনেনি। ওইবারই বেশি কষ্ট পেয়েছিলাম। পাকিস্তান সিরিজ শেষ হওয়ার ১০-১৫ দিনের মধ্যেই নিলাম হয়েছিল। সিরিজের দলে থাকার পরও আমাকে কেউ নেয়নি। মনে হচ্ছিল, জাতীয় দলের খেলোয়াড়ের কি তাহলে কোনো মূল্য নেই! পরে নিজেকে সান্ত্বনা দিয়েছি। হয়তো বা আমি টেস্ট বোলার, সে জন্য নেয়নি। পরের বিপিএলের নিলামেও আমাকে কেউ নিল না। তখন আর খারাপ লাগেনি।

 এখন কি মনে হয়, বিপিএলে না খেলাটাই ভালো হয়েছে আপনার জন্য? বোলিং নিয়ে কাজ করতে পেরেছেন। বিপিএল খেলতে গিয়ে অনেকের মতো ইনজুরিতেও পড়েননি...
রবিউল: এমনিতে আমার ফিটনেস খুব একটা ভালো নয়। প্র্যাকটিসে রানিং হলে সবার শেষে থাকি। রানিংয়ের কথা শুনলেই তাই মাথা খারাপ হয়ে যায়। তবে একাডেমিতে কাজ করে বোলিং ফিটনেসটা বেড়েছে। বিপিএল খেললে এ রকম বোলিং ফিটনেস পেতাম না। সুইং নিয়েও কাজ করেছি। নতুন বলের সুইং, পুরোনো বলের সুইং। এ ছাড়া রানিং, জিম, ফিটনেস ট্রেনিং তো আছেই। বিপিএল খেললে এটা হতো না। বিপিএলে না খেললেও শুনেছি সেখানে প্র্যাকটিস বা ফিটনেস ট্রেনিংগুলো সেভাবে হয় না।

 জাতীয় দলে তো সেভাবে নিয়মিত ছিলেন না। এবারের জিম্বাবুয়ে সফরটা কি আপনার জগৎটাই বদলে দিল?
রবিউল: আমার আত্মবিশ্বাস বেড়েছে মূলত শ্রীলঙ্কা সফরে। জিম্বাবুয়ে অবশ্যই ভালো দল। তবে শ্রীলঙ্কা দলে অনেক বড় বড় ব্যাটসম্যান আছে। সেখানে ওই গরমের মধ্যেও ভালো করেছি। সে আত্মবিশ্বাসই এখানে কাজ করেছে। তবে আমার কাছে স্বাভাবিক সময়ে যেমন লাগে, তেমনই লাগছে। তবে একটা জিনিস দেখে ভালো লেগেছে, দ্বিতীয় টেস্টের আগে জিম্বাবুয়ে আমার বোলিং নিয়ে অনেক চিন্তাভাবনা করেছে। দুই ওপেনারকেই দেখলাম আমাকে একটু সামনে এগিয়ে এসে খেলছিল। হয়তো মনে করেছে, ওই জায়গা থেকে আমি বল সুইং করাচ্ছি। আমাকে নিয়ে একটা দল চিন্তা করেছে, এটাই ভালো লেগেছে।

 ক্রিকেটার হলেন কীভাবে? একদম শুরুর গল্পটা বলুন...
রবিউল: আমার বাড়ি সাতক্ষীরার সুলতানপুরে। সাতক্ষীরার পিএন হাইস্কুলের হয়ে নির্মাণ স্কুল ক্রিকেট খেলেছি ক্লাস সিক্স-সেভেনে পড়ার সময় থেকেই। বাড়ির পাশেই স্কুলের মাঠ। সেখানেই পড়ে থাকতাম সারা দিন। এলাকার ইদ্রিস বাবু ভাই, ফিরোজ ভাই আর আজম ভাই আমার খুব খেয়াল রাখতেন। ইদ্রিস বাবু ভাই আমাকে খুলনা প্রথম বিভাগ লিগে একটা ম্যাচ খেলতে পাঠালেন। আব্বুর পকেট থেকে ২০০ টাকা চুরি করে লুকিয়ে চলে গিয়েছিলাম খুলনায়। সেখান থেকে আসার পর ফিরোজ ভাই আর আজম ভাই একদিন পত্রিকায় দেখলেন খুলনায় অনূর্ধ্ব-১৯ ক্রিকেটের বাছাই হবে। সাতক্ষীরা থেকে ১১ জন গেলাম। ওখানে মোট ১২০ জনের মতো ছিল। ঢাকা থেকে ইমরান স্যার, ফাহিম স্যাররা বাছাই করতে গিয়েছিলেন। নেটে আমার দ্বিতীয় বলটাই গিয়ে লাগল ব্যাটসম্যানের বুকে। ব্যাটসম্যান সঙ্গে সঙ্গে শুয়ে পড়ল। ইমরান স্যার তখন আমাকে ডেকে নাম-টাম জিজ্ঞেস করে বললেন, ‘তোমার আর নেটে বল করা লাগবে না।’ বাছাই করা সেরা ২০ জনের মধ্যে আমি ছিলাম। পরে সেন্টার উইকেটে স্যার বোলিং করালেন। সেখানেও ভালো করলাম। সেরা চারজনের মধ্যে আমি ১ নম্বর। এরপর পেসার হান্ট হলো। আজম ভাই, ফিরোজ ভাইয়েরা আমাকে সেখানেও পাঠালেন। এভাবেই শুরু। ২০০৫ সালে প্রথম প্রিমিয়ার ও জাতীয় লিগে খেললাম।

 সাতক্ষীরায় লিগ বা টুর্নামেন্ট হতো না? সেখানে খেলেননি?
রবিউল: হতো। ক্লাস নাইনে পড়ার সময় এলাকার ফরহাদ মামা, হিরণ ভাই ও দীপু ভাই আমাকে সাতক্ষীরা দ্বিতীয় বিভাগ ক্রিকেট লিগে খেলার সুযোগ করে দিয়েছিলেন। নেটে বোলিং করতাম, কিন্তু আমার বল কেউ খেলতে পারত না। স্টাম্প ভেঙে ফেলতাম। ওসব তো সাধারণ স্টাম্প, আমার বল লাগলেই ভেঙে যেত। স্টাম্প ভেঙে ফেলতাম বলে নেটে আমাকে বোলিং করতে দিত না। স্টাম্প যে বারবার কিনতে হবে, তাই। আমি শুধু ম্যাচেই বল করতাম।

 পরিবারের কথা বলুন। বাবা-মা কখনো বাধা দেননি খেলাধুলায়?
রবিউল: আমরা এক বোন, এক ভাই। বড় বোনের বিয়ে হয়ে গেছে। আব্বু একসময় ঠিকাদারি করতেন। পরে হ্যাচারি ব্যবসা শুরু করেন। এখন অবশ্য কিছুই করেন না। চার-পাঁচ বছর আগে স্ট্রোক করেছিলেন। এর পর থেকে আমি তাঁকে কিছুই করতে দিই না। সংসারও আমিই চালাচ্ছি। খেলাধুলায় আব্বু-আম্মু সব সময় সমর্থনই দিয়েছেন। পড়াশোনা করতাম না বলে আম্মু মাঝেমধ্যে রাগ করতেন। আর সব মায়ের মতো তিনিও বলতেন, আগে পড়া পরে খেলা। কিন্তু আমি সারা দিন খেলে বাসায় গিয়ে সন্ধ্যাবেলাতেই ঘুমিয়ে পড়তাম। পড়াশোনা করতাম না। আব্বু অবশ্য আমাকে খেলার ব্যাপারে বরাবরই উৎসাহ দিতেন। কিন্তু মাঠে ওনাকে দেখলে আমি আর বল করতে পারতাম না। মনে আছে, প্রথম যেদিন উনি মাঠে গেলেন, প্রথম ওভারে সাতটা ওয়াইড দিয়েছিলাম। এর পর থেকে আব্বু সব সময় পেছন দিকে এক কোনায় দাঁড়িয়ে আমার খেলা দেখেন।

 এখন আপনি জাতীয় দলের খেলোয়াড়। বাবা-মা নিশ্চয়ই খুব খুশি?
রবিউল: আমি একমাত্র ছেলে। বাপ-মা তো গর্ব করবেনই। আর ছেলে ডাক্তার-ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হবে, এটা মনে হয় তাঁরাও কখনো চাননি। আমিও শুরুতেই বলে দিয়েছিলাম, আমাকে নিয়ে অন্য কোনো স্বপ্ন না দেখতে। আমি খেলাধুলাই করব।

 জাতীয় দলে খেলার স্বপ্ন দেখার শুরু কবে থেকে?
রবিউল: পেসার হান্টে আসার পর। তখন সব সময় মাথার মধ্যে মাশরাফি ভাইয়ের চিন্তা থাকত। মনে
হতো, ওনার মতো বোলার হতে হবে।

 দেশের বাইরের বোলারদের মধ্যে কার বোলিং ভালো লাগে?
রবিউল: শেন বন্ডের। আমি আউট সুইং বোলার। ওর আউট সুইং আর অ্যাকশন ভালো লাগত। আমার মনে হয়, ১৩০-৪০ এর মধ্যে রেখে সুইং করানো গেলেই সেই বল খেলা কঠিন।

 সাতক্ষীরার সেই ছোট্ট রবিউল আজ তারকাদ্যুতি ছড়াতে শুরু করেছে। নিজের এলাকায় গেলে টের পান সেটা?
রবিউল: মনে হয় না সাতক্ষীরায় আমি এখনো তারকা হয়েছি। বন্ধুবান্ধবেরা তো বলে, তুই বাংলাদেশ দলের প্লেয়ার, কিন্তু আমরা তোকে দাম দিই না। আমার টেনিস বলে খেলার নেশা আছে। এখনো বাড়িতে গেলে আশপাশে খেলা থাকলে খেলি। গ্রামাঞ্চলে খেলতে গেলে অনেকে দেখতে আসে—জাতীয় দলের খেলোয়াড় শিবলু এসেছে। অবশ্য শ্রীলঙ্কা সিরিজের পর মনে হচ্ছে, সাতক্ষীরা শহরেও অনেকেই চিনছে আমাকে। রাস্তায় দেখলে বলে, ওই যে শিবলু যাচ্ছে।

What I took away - along with the "what a humble guy" bit - 4-5 other pacers were supposed to practice with him but didn't show up. Someone like Robin, Alauddin Babu, Rabbi should be all over that stuff!

Very disappointed about the other who did not show up. Their loss his gain. Ekei bole faka jale goal dewa.

We complain so much why selectors don't pick this or that. Now I see only a very few have true dedication.

Very fascinating story. Thanks to the interviewer. Robiul is going to inspire a new generation of pace bowlers like Mashrafe once did. Shame our cricket organisers don't understand the real value of pace bowlers.

This right here is what made the difference. You have to want it really bad for yourself. I think he changed a lot of our opinions regarding his ability and willingness to improve. Once again this just goes to show hard work pays off. Keep up the good work Robiul, and let that be a lesson for all of our players out there, coaches are there to help you but you have to reach out to them and get what you want/need.

I don't know if the selector's decided to stick to him because they know how hard he was working or that they decided to go with him thinking they had no option since Shafi, Mash and Abul are injured. Whatever the reason maybe I'm glad they stuck to him. Hopefully this is the beginning of something good.

Work ethic is an important factor. Respect to robiul. You need to work hard time and again. If there is no cricket going on you still have to work hard in the nets as well as improve your fitness. There is no excuse.

anyway really nice interview .......

looks to be a player who think how to improve his game and how to minimize the weaknesses.

if shafiul, rubel and abul who are still raw can learn something this example, get inspired and do the necessary can be fine bowlers in future.

and seriously, shahdat hossain should stay away ... ....

Kudos to McInnes, Karpinen and ofcourse Robiul himself. I hope those 4-5 lazy @**es realize what they missed and beg Macci and Karpi to make them half as good as Robi.

Oh! So, its basically exclusive interview. Didn't occur to me! The direct translation does not make sense.

I was thinking more on the line of "cozy" or "regarding personal matter" or something like that.

Three foreign coachers were there to train pace bowlers and only one bowler showed up. So when pace bowling sucks in the match, should we blame coaches?

And some of the fans get on the cases of our coaches. Coach Ian talked about this problem before as well. Out of the WC squad, not even one of the pacers went up to him and asked for advice. And he also said many players wouldn't show up for the coaches fitness sessions.

So rather than just blaming everything on these coaches, let's blame the players as well. They're the ones who are representing the nation in the end and it's their careers, it's up to them if they want to improve their skills or not. The coaches can't babysit or coddle them. Also BCB is to blame for not being stern enough with the disciplinary issues as well. If they played tough on our players, I'm sure they wouldn't have that lackadaisical attitude.

If we want to become one of the best teams in the world, then we really need to iron these issues out or else we'll continue to make slow progress

we have not exactly got a tough bcb boss since saber hossain chowdhury to be tough on the rules.

i m sure once we get former cricketers - test cricketers will go to the top positions, then we will see a change in everything.

WORK ETHIC does not exist in our culture. BCB and our players are no exception. You would think being contracted and getting monthly salary it would be mandatory for players to show up at least 3-4 days a week and go through practice and fitness sessions just like all paid employees do. It should not matter whether or not they need to get ready for a series or in the middle of one, if you get paid on a monthly basis you should work for it. It's not like BD players don't make any money from the matches they play; if there are incentives for good performance and if there's fee for each match then why get paid when you are not putting in your effort through out the year?
