I was afraid that Naeem would fail in ODIs and eventually be dropped from test team as well.

First part is accomplished. Now waiting for the second part.

It was totally expected. Our selectors need to learn!

He's been a one big fluke. His test 100 came on a flat deck. I'd rather see Ashraful than him.

Jamie used to use Naeem in the lower order. At that time in this forum there was a storm, Naeem is a top order batsman Jamie ruined his career. I think they have learned how poor Naeem as a top order batsman.

Now you know why Jamie didn't bat him higher... and a good point you make.

Ryad on the other hand was always someone worth pursuing as a top order player. I sincerely hope he gets the chances to play an innings in the top 5

Even though he scored a 50 in the first ODI wasn't convinced or happy with Naeem being in the ODI team. Clearly, our selectors have no idea about choosing horses for courses. Needs to remain in the test team though for the moment.

Dear coach its a big issue. As far as I know Jaimie offered Riyad to play up the order several times but Riyad refused. Am I wrong? What is the cause he bat so low down the order ?

I think Riyad lacked confidence then, but the vice captaincy and some excellent batting performances may be the difference. His match-winning innings against England in the WC was a turning point for him.

I feel he is comfortable not being a front line batsman because if he fails where he bats then he isn't expected to do well. As a top 5 batter he would.

It's just now a matter of whether he WANTS to step up (as I believe he can) or if he still has the same mentality from Jamie's days...

my problem with riyad is he only bats well in the lower order and it's usually for a losing cause. i'll be happy if he starts doing it in the top 5 for a winning cause.

as far as naeem goes, i just said in another thread, riyad and naeem are similar but in ODIs riyad is better both at batting and bowling so keep one (riyad) and the other needs to go so we can pick someone more useful for the team.

Whoever named him "Chokka Naeem" I'm sure he meant the other one, but we were misguided thinking him to be capable of hitting 6s.... But now he has proven the meaning of Chokka, by his gutless batting again and again..... Please Drop, we don't have a place for Chokkas in ODI team...

Naeem is doing pretty decent in BPL2, scored another 50+ with decent SR. But no love for him yet?

despite doing well this BPL i'd still prefer him to be a test specialist, for now, at the international level. if he can establish him self as a solid and consistent test batsman, and he continues good form in domestic LOs then think about him for ODIs and T20Is.

While other players makes money in T20, you want Naeem to be in the side line and suck his thumbs?

I would rather advice him, based on this BPL2 success, your rather dump TEST, and more concentrate on t20 and see where it takes you, and in the mean time make some money and secure your financial future.

TESTs for us is like leap years, comes every g=fout year, and there is is no guaranee that Naeem will be inn TEST team, too many nay sayers against him. If you just concentrate on TEST, Naeem will be homeless pretty soon.

So I say... sky is the limit... explore the opportunities and see you can again become chokka Naeem... because the money is there... the fame is there... Gavaskar typer- player-der aar bhaat nai.... so don't make that mistake.

if a player wants to make money they don't even need to play international cricket, nowadays they can travel to various t20 leagues and be paid handsomely. saying naeem should focus on tests atm doesn't mean he should stop playing t20s and one-day matches, i just think it would be best for him to first establish himself in the test arena as that's where his game is more suited. in time he could come into the shorter format teams, but at current he has a much better longer format record, not just proven in domestics but internationally to (so far at least). an average of 24 after 50+ ODIs and 14 after 9 t20Is suggests he's not well suited to the shorter formats, even his domestic t20 average is just 21 after 35 matches so it's not like he's been dominant in the format. in FCs his average is 40 with his test average being 32. it is correct he may not even be in the test team, but he seems to have a much better chance of succeeding internationally in the test arena, if he can conquer that, it will make it easier for him to conquer the shorter formats (at the international level).

Can you please elaborate further? How a relatively young Bangladeshi player with no clear etablished reputation can suddenly get offers from various t20 leagues around the world?

May be our Zia, Milon, Anamul, Shuvo, and all other young players can follow your suggested path and start making some money by playing t20 all through the world

I thought only when you established your reputation, you can milk your past reputation in international career and can make money that way: like afridi for example.

you don't sit and wait for offers, you get your manager to go out and get you the offers. sure you can't just hop into a BBL team or an IPL team but there are a lot of t20 leagues like the BPL where a player doesn't have to have the greatest reputation to get a spot, being a test nation can help BD players with this because generally players from a test nation are considered better than those from associates. plus if a player chooses to specialise in t20s and makes it known to people they'll probably get more opportunities. over the years there have been a number of aussie players who have no good records at domestic level, haven't played international cricket that have been offered contracts even in the IPL, so i'm sure a player from a test playing nation who specialises in t20s and has a good manager could get quite a few gigs in various t20 leagues. no international or domestic commitments would make them more wanted to. now if we talk specifically about naeem, he has enough of a reputation, his naeem is well known enough for him to get some t20 gigs, especially if he were to specialise in the format, but that doesn't help BD cricket, it doesn't establish himself as an international player so it's really something the player has to decide, does international cricket mean more to them than making money.

but coming back to establishing your reputation, then if what you're saying is correct then wouldn't it be wise for naeem to focus a bit more on tests since that is his best chance of establishing a reputation?

I am guessing we are noit arguing for the sake of arguing. I don't know about players of other nationals. but I hope know that its not that easy even for our natioanl players to get opportunity elsewhere, specially t20 games where money is there... after all we are talking about making money for the players. Players like Nasir is ebing constantly ignored in so far in most of the t20 tournaments.

And also we like it or not, all TEST counbtries and their player's standard in general is not considered in similar level. THere must be reasons why you don't see too many Banlgadeshi players in other t20 tournament... its caoont be just beacuse these players are just stupid and cannot market themselves... its more than that... its more to demand...and supply and reputation in between.

If you ask me... it's yes but with a qualifier... that's why I used Afridi, not Tausif Ahmed for example. Yes right reputation helps, but wrong reputation kills. A Bangladeshi established specialized TEST only bastman (unlike Tamim who establsihed all format at the same time) ... can be a "final nail in the coffin" for a player like Naeem. In top of that, if he cannot make the TESTteam, its all his efforts wasted for nothing.

Now it amy only work if a) Naeem first establish as a TEST batsman in the team (Big if); b) Then Naeem start exploring ODI ( another big if plus time factor will be against him); c) Naeem establish in ODI....

You add difficulty multiplier with each step, the probability of his sucess will be in the single digit.

So I say, why try that path? If you have to try one format, try with t20...this BPL2 is giving him new opportunity to explore.

Anyway I am done with BangladeshCricket forum for this weekend... have a nice weekend.

Naeem doesn't show the improvisational ability, collection of shots and alertness between the wicket that someone of his power-base would require to be a very successful T20 player. Of the current group, Nasir, Shak, TiK, Mushy and Ash are the only batters who would be able to market themselves to outside T20 leagues. Even the likes of Shamsur, Jahirul or SN wouldn't. Neem is behind those guys. Note Riyadh is no where on this list.

and yet he played in sri lanka's t20 league. so riyad a player not suited to t20s was able to get a good run in a t20 league outside of BD, i realise he has played international cricket for awhile but so has naeem. anyway there are plenty of quality test players who have been able to break into the shorter formats, even those who don't have a reputation as an aggressive hitter e.g. kallis. i reckon probably most BD FC players aren't going out and looking for t20 contracts in other leagues, now i'd say in countries like australia, england, pakistan etc the players are going looking for t20 contracts. BD players probably aren't being proactive and are just waiting for one to plop into their lap.

points are valid i will not argue that, but imo if a player was to say get some exposure in the u19 world cup, with the right manager they'd be able to carve out a nice career plyaing just t20 leagues. easier said than done of course, but really, with cricket going the way it's going i don't think that's a far fetched analysis.

also think of it this way, say naeem is in the test team and does well, he'll still have a good reputation and be looked at for the shorter formats because he's performed against quality bowling regardless of format. now if he was to focus on t20s and/or ODIs and do poorly (which is possible because he's not suited to the formats), then that would hamper his reputation.

there is no reason why a player can't focus on one format and still work on their game for the other 2 formats.
