Default "Fielding and running between the wicket" discussion Thread

I know thread are opening left and right. So I was compelled to open up a thread where we can discuss our fielding and running between the wicket.
Before the world cup I thought we are the top fielding side after Srilanka in the subcontinent but I was mistaken by a big margin. I can safely say India is the best fielding side in this region. Their ground fielding was a treat to watch. They were way better than us. As a developing side like us this is a aspect of our game where we can improve quiet quickly if we put our effort into it.
I know that it needs no saying that our running between the wicket is the worst if we compare with the top cricketing side like Australia, South Africa. We can improve this aspect of the game more than 50% just putting a little effort on this.

Any suggestion regarding this will be highly appreciated.

Overall improvement in fielding takes time. With the new generation in and old generation out (Bashar, Raz) we are getting better. The amount of drop catches in SL'an game was mind boggling. Sitters missing was painful to watch. Anamul who is a keeper, Mominul, Taskin letting go balls between his legs, and there were so many more. Jumping the gun or anticipation is lacking big time.

As the saying goes, Holding your catches will win you the game. For our case, at least, be competitive with the big boys.

Running between the wickets is never practiced. Net practice doesn't give you that dimension. Good thing Haturi had the vision to practice running between the wickets in the WC preparation creating match like situations. Still there were so much confusion in the real game. Yes go, no, Yes, no. I mean come on. Hesitation builts in when you can't trust your partner.

I understand this skill is harnessed in the domestic leagues. But our diamond boys don't play them often.

Where as other teams are converting ones to twos (backing up), twos to threes - we are declining singles. Anamul's ROCK SOLID forward defense was funny. Keeping wickets is the primary target but losing the plot in the process don't do you any good. Play the ball on its merit. Defend if you must. But then again you must look for opportunity to rotate the strike. That's the only time a right-hand left-hand opening pair puts pressure on the opposing bowler to have his line proper.

The fitness level of Tamim and some others are just jaw dropping. Lets take up a donation for Tamim and buy him a combol (blanket).

Fielding and running between the wicket can be improved by hard work, no special talent is needed (like bowling or batting).

There is no alternative of hard work. Talent or not you have to work hard or else you will fail. Its so frustrating to see a team like us who are so young as a group is doing bad fielding than a more mature team like india!! We got to have a look in this department to improve as a fearsome unit. Fielding and running between the wicket lifts up the spirit of the team.

Running between wickets have a big relation with IQ. Players with low IQ has more possibility of run out. Ash is a big example. No doubt practice improves the situation.

LOL, a higher immobile quiche around the Gould No Ball zone can be the other impediment.

Very good thread freeman. These two areas are major weaknesses of the side, and something i hope we address before 2019.

Fielding we arent doing that bad. But to get to an exceptional level, a lot more work has to be done-on a team and individual level.

Running between the wickets hasnt improved one bit over the years. The guys lack the confidence to take quick singles, or convert a one to two. The number of 3's are extremely rare even though we played in very large grounds in Australia. They also have poor communication, judgement and dont seem to trust one another. Strike rotation is a concept they know abt but dont know how to execute. Many of our batsman cant hit to long on or long off or nudge on the leg side. They just dont see the gaps. This is where we might need specialized attention. Or perhaps our Head Coach must arrange camps just to work on this specific area.

Thanks. Good to be recognised by someone at last. No I thought everyone is talking our batting and bowling but in fact our game can improve a huge way if we can fix this two aspect of the game.

It can, and like Mr Gavaskar always says, fielding is an area in which you can improve and be better than more developed cricketing nations. Same could be said about running between the wicket. You may not have the big hitting arsenal, but you can still get a lot of runs by minimizing dots, or converting 1's to 2's.

I think all areas including bowling and batting can be improved by hard work, as seen with Mushfiq and Tamim. They 2 started with similar capabilities but went on opposite direction... Maybe fielding is more so than the other 2 departments.

But the challenge in improving fielding is, we need grounds with proper grass coverage in domestic matches that encourages dives & slides. That is one of the reason why developed nations with good facilities (SA, England, Nz, Aus) tend to do better in fielding than developing nations (Pak, India, BD). Similarly, slip catching is also a product of real match situation, in seaming wickets in England, NZ most domestic players get the chance to practice catches on a regular basis but in Bangladeshi domestic league this is hardly the case. The national team players can of course improve by training & practice, but it will be hard to match Aussie or South Africa level without grass root level changes in facilities and domestic league structure.
