Rankin comes in, reckon he's a great pick he'll be a handful. Ballance into the squad, he's been so consistent in multiple formats, and stokes comes in instead of bresnan and woakes, reckon he's a good pick to. Surprised trems made it, he looked good a few years ago but from what I've heard he's lost things a bit.

going to be very interesting to see how bailey goes. things looking better for the aus batting with bailey's name there ahead of others, on top of that guys like watson, smith and roger's started to perform towards the end of the series in england. if faulkner plays, and unfortunately i doubt he will unless one of the others gets injured then the aussie batting line-up will be quite deep. johnson has a test ton, he can bat quite a bit and faulkner can as well so we'd be looking at some solid lower order batting.

This will be a very interesting series. Even though, England won the series 3-0 last time around, it could've easily been 2-1 in favor of Australia. Big test for England coming up and also for Australia

if rankin plays i reckon he'll be a handful for the aussie batsmen, finn is to inconsistent imo, trems from what i hear has lost it but you never know. they're all 6'7 so should all get a lot of bounce which will make them tricky.

Does England really need Rankin? They already have one of the best pace attack in the world. When Morgan made the England squad, they had a gap in that position. That is not the case right now for England in terms of fast bowling.

I'm predicting Rankin will get dropped from England squad within 6 months , and he will back back to playing for Ireland by 2015 WC.

Rankin is a rare player though since he's very tall and bowls fast. He stands at about 6' 7." Tall bowlers can extract lots of bounce even on flat tracks due to their height. Obviously that doesn't mean he'll be a star because of this but he has the elements to be a very good fast bowler for England.

Either it'll really work or really backfire. Onions should've made it over Tremlett. With Anderson's swing and Onions seam, they'd have been able to be a real threat.

I think they went overkill with the tall pacers. Finn and Rankin are fine but Tremlett hasn't been in good form and yet they went with him over an in form Onions.

I guess we'll see what happens

of course they don't need him, they've got good enough players as it is, but rankin is a really good fast bowler so if he is willing to play for them then why would they not use him (assuming he is in their top 3 pacers at any given time)?

i honestly don't really have a problem with players jumping to other countries, as long as they do the time they have to do to be able to play for the new country, especially for irish players who really deserve test status but aren't getting it and it seems there are no signs that they'll get it anytime soon either so if they're good enough why wouldn't they jump ship? if your dream is to play test cricket and your irish, well the only way to give yourself a chance is by changing countries.

yeah they didn't need to bring tremlett and i wouldn't have brought finn either tbh. like you say they should have picked onions and what about sidebottom? what's he been like lately? he was a great prospect and a very good left arm bowler but he hasn't got much international cricket.

didn't sidebottom retire a year ago?

Ashes needs spicier wickets. Australia won't be able to get England out twice on flat tracks.

Australia's batting was just poor. So many wickets just given away. Credit to England for staying disciplined and eventually prying out the wickets. Australia have to try their best and try to get to 350-400 if they want to stay in the match

As they say, don't judge a batting performance until both teams bat.

I had a feeling that England could struggle with their defensive approach on the Aussie wickets. They'll have to work hard to get back in this game.
