NCL looks bleak

The country's lone first-class cricket tournament, the National Cricket League (NCL), has already run into trouble. It is now unlikely for the competition to begin on the originally scheduled date of October 10 as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is not finding enough players to fill up the eight teams.
The erstwhile six-team NCL has been expanded to eight teams with the addition of Rangpur and Dhaka Metropolis. Now with the Tigers playing against West Indies next month, Bangladesh A scheduled to fly off to the West Indies at the end of October and the GP-BCB National Cricket Academy also set to tour India, there is a dearth of cricketers good enough to play first-class cricket.
According to BCB's tournament committee secretary Hafizur Rahman Joarder, just one division has enough players while the rest would find it difficult to field even a playing eleven.
"Only Rajshahi can field a good team but not teams like Khulna. They have players in the national setup and some are also injured," he said last night after their meeting was cancelled due to tournament committee chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain's illness.
Lack of competitiveness is the main deterrent for the tournament committee and they are not ready to host an NCL without some of these top players. They fear that matches could be over in two days, drawing ire from all concerned.
Some however have doubted whether it is so difficult to find 120-150 cricketers good enough for first-class cricket. Since the inception of the competition, the organisers have always tried to make the incumbent top players play first-class cricket but in the last few seasons, hardly any of the national players have taken part in the competition.
Though it creates space for lesser known talents to come up through the ranks, the poor infrastructural facilities across the country stop such players from making a mark. Only Dhaka, Rajshahi and part of the northern belt have active cricket academies with Rajshahi as the biggest beneficiary. But divisions like Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong have very little to work with.
The addition of Dhaka Metropolis as the eighth team is also curious as there are very few quality cricketers who are residents of the capital city. Though Dhaka is the centre of cricketing activities, the leagues (First Division and Premier) teams hardly have a player who lives in Dhaka in their line-ups.
A more reformed approach with development in the regional centres could solve this problem that creeps up every year but BCB has hardly ever addressed it in the proper way.
Meanwhile, the NCL's format is also different this year with eights teams playing in a single-league format. Later in December, the top four will play in the Super League with the best two set to play a five-day final in April next year. The four teams who don't make it to the second phase could also play three-day games against each other.
Grounds in Rajshahi, Bogra, BKSP, Sylhet and Jessore have been earmarked as the NCL venues.

I think they should postpone it...we have nats duty, a team duty, hongkong six a side tournament all in October..so it would be wise to postpone it to November. No point playing NCL when top 40 players won't able to participate.

This single report says all that needs to be said about the sorry structure of cricket in the country... Playing 5 test and 7 First class a year and with less than 200 FC cricketer cricket is not going to improve.....
A country of 150 Million has less than 200 First Class cricketer. this really says it all. And, that is after 12 years of "so called progress" in cricket by the BCB.

It's not that frustrating. And it doesn't also mean that we don't have 200 cricketers. Infact if the National Team+A Team + Academy Team are all out, do you really want the FC League to start? We allready complain a lot of, not so competitive Domestic leagues, and without these guys we will only be misguided by fake talents. Some one un known will boost his stats against no name bowlers and some stat happy fans will start shouting remove x and remove y and take this new tendulkar, selectors are rubbish, BCB is nonsense... Etc etc and we will be in turmoil again. I'm happy that BCB Has decided to delay the NCL in this situation. No need to have a Tokai NCL. Even India will struggle to have a quality FC cricket without these three entities .... It's not so difficult to produce 8 teams at all, there are thousands ... Who play school and district level crickets.... But you can't leave out academy, a team and National team from NCL.

Why We all are always on toes to criticize everything that BCB does? Relax guys and let's be rational some times.

And what's their standard? Better than BCB organized teams? Every division can form 8 teams and they will all flock like flies, if BCB opens the flood gate for NCL to them... What's the use?

we all know Lotus deserves bashing for various reasons. but its not only him. BCB's priorities do not lie with the NCL or test cricket. they are all about tours and making money. if BCB truly invested themselves for the NCL, this situation would not arise.

is it really that hard to get a window for the NCL when national players and the top 50 players will be able to play? I was getting hopeful with the fast wicket for the BCB cup, but still BCB has not paid enough attention to NCL to even make sure it gets going!

we will keep suffering in test cricket until we get our act together at the NCL.

বেশ চিন্তিতমুখে নিজের অফিসরুমে বসে আছেন হাফিজুর রহমান জোয়ার্দার। বিসিবি টুর্নামেন্ট কমিটির সদস্য সচিব তিনি। বড় বড় টুর্নামেন্ট সামলানোর অভিজ্ঞতা রয়েছে তার। কিন্তু এবার জাতীয় লীগের চার দিনের ম্যাচ আয়োজন করতে গিয়েই বড় এক চ্যালেঞ্জের মুখোমুখি হতে হয়েছে তাকে। ছয় দলের সঙ্গে এবার বাড়তি দুটি যোগ হয়ে জাতীয় লীগ হচ্ছে। প্রতি দলে ২০ ক্রিকেটার করে দেওয়া হলেও দরকার মোট ১৬০। কিন্তু এত ক্রিকেটার কোথায় পাবেন তিনি। ক্রিকেটারের ভাণ্ডারে যে টান পড়েছে। অক্টোবরজুড়ে জাতীয় দল ব্যস্ত থাকবে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ সিরিজ খেলতে। ৩০ অক্টোবর আবার 'এ' দল যাচ্ছে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ সফরে। শোনা যাচ্ছে, অনূর্ধ-১৯ দলকেও ঘরের মাঠে ডিসেম্বরে ইংল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে খেলতে হবে। হাতে থাকল শুধু একাডেমী দল। নির্বাচক মীনহাজুল আবেদীন নান্নুর হিসাবে এ মুহূর্তে হাতে দরকার ২০০ ক্রিকেটার। অথচ প্রথম শ্রেণীর ম্যাচ খেলার অভিজ্ঞতা আছে_ এমন ক্রিকেটারের সংখ্যা একশ'র বেশি নয়। তাহলে বাকি একশ' ক্রিকেটারের জোগান আসবে কোত্থেকে? উত্তর খুঁজতে এরই মধ্যে টুর্নামেন্ট কমিটির পক্ষ থেকে সিসিডিএমে থাকা ক্রিকেটারদের তালিকা তলব করা হয়েছে। অনূর্ধ্ব-১৯ দলের ক্রিকেটাদেরও এবারের জাতীয় লীগে খেলানোর সুযোগ করে দেওয়ার চিন্তা করা হচ্ছে।
বিসিবির বার্ষিক ক্যালেন্ডার ঠিক রাখতে ১৬ থেকে ১৮ অক্টোবরের মধ্যে জাতীয় লীগ শুরু করতে হবে। আবার জাতীয় দলের ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ সিরিজ শেষ হবে অক্টোবরে। এরপর নভেম্বরের প্রথম সপ্তাহ থেকে ঈদের ছুটি শুরু হবে। তার আগেই 'এ' দল ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ চলে যাবে। এর মধ্যেই সিক্স-এ-সাইড খেলতে ১০ জনের একটি দল যাবে হংকং। দেশসেরা প্রায় ৫০ ক্রিকেটার এ সময় জাতীয় লীগ খেলতে পারবেন না। 'আসলে একসঙ্গে ঠাসা সূচি হয়ে যাওয়াতেই এমনটা হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে আবার ঈদের ছুটি রয়েছে। ঢাকা প্রিমিয়ার লীগ রয়েছে। সুতরাং লীগের প্রথম পর্বটা সেরে মার্চ নাগাদ সুপার ফোর আয়োজন করা যাবে।' হাফিজ জোয়ার্দারের চিন্তা তাই লীগের মান নিয়ে। 'আসলে দেশসেরা প্রথম শ্রেণীর ৫০ ক্রিকেটার না থাকলে লীগের মান নিয়ে প্রশ্ন উঠবে। অনেকেরই হয়তো এবারই প্রথম শ্রেণীর ম্যাচে অভিষেক হবে।' জোয়ার্দারের মতো লীগের মান নিয়ে চিন্তিত বিসিবির অনেক কর্মকতাও।
অনেকেই প্রশ্ন রেখেছেন ক্রিকেটারদের জোগান নিশ্চিত না করেই এবারের জাতীয় লীগে রংপুর এবং ঢাকা মেট্রো নামে দুটি দল গড়া হয়েছে। তবে নির্বাচকদের একজন জানিয়েছেন, সম্ভাব্য সেরাদের নিয়েই জাতীয় লীগের দল গড়া হবে। 'এটা ঠিক, জাতীয় দল এবং 'এ' দলের ক্রিকেটারদের অনেকেই জাতীয় লীগের বেশিরভাগ ম্যাচ খেলতে পারবেন না। তবে সম্ভাব্য সেরাদের নিয়েই আমরা দল গড়ার চেষ্টা করব।' শুধু ঢাকা প্রিমিয়ার লীগ নয়, ক্রিকেটারদের জোগান নিশ্চিত করতে অন্যান্য শহরের লীগের পারফরমারদেরও নজরে আনা হবে। ক্রিকেটার সংকট নিয়ে চিন্তা থাকলেও লীগের ভেন্যু নিয়ে বেশ আশাবাদী হাফিজ জোয়ার্দার। 'ফতুল্লা, বিকেএসপি, বগুড়া, রাজশাহী ছাড়াও এবার সিলেট আর রংপুরকে পাচ্ছি আমরা। প্রথম শ্রেণীর ম্যাচ খেলার উপযোগী উইকেট রয়েছে সিলেটে। আমার বিশ্বাস, এবার জাতীয় লীগের ভালো কয়েকটি ম্যাচ অনুষ্ঠিত হবে সিলেটে।' উইকেটের মান উন্নতি করা হলেও কি ক্রিকেটারদের মানোন্নয়ন সম্ভব হয়েছে? দেশসেরা ৫০ ক্রিকেটার বাইরে রেখে জাতীয় লীগের মান যে কতটা উন্নত হবে, খোদ বিসিবিতেও প্রশ্ন থেকে গেল সেটি নিয়ে।

বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ড (বিসিবি) ঘরে ঘরে ক্রিকেটার চেয়ে আবেদন করতে পারে। বিজ্ঞাপন দেওয়ার মতো সহজ পথও বেছে নেওয়া যায়। বিজ্ঞাপনের ভাষা হতে পারে ‘প্রথম শ্রেণীর ক্রিকেটার চাই’।

আসলে জাতীয় লিগের জন্য ক্রিকেটার খুঁজে পাচ্ছেন না জাতীয় দল নির্বাচকরা। অনেক চেষ্টা করেও মোটামুটি মানের দল গড়া সম্ভব হচ্ছে না। যাদের জন্য প্রথম শ্রেণীর ক্রিকেট বেশি প্রয়োজন বরাবরের মতো বর্তমান মৌসুমেও খেলার সুযোগ পাচ্ছেন না তারা।

জাতীয় দলের ক্রিকেটাররা যথারীতি ব্যস্ত থাকবেন আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেট নিয়ে। অক্টোবরে ‘এ’ দলের খেলোয়াড়রা যাবেন ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ সফরে। একাডেমির বিদেশ সফর বাতিল হলে কেবল তাদেরকে পাওয়া যাবে জাতীয় লিগের জন্য। অনূর্ধ্ব-১৯ ক্রিকেট দল থেকে কয়েকজনকে প্রথম শ্রেণীর ক্রিকেটের জন্য বিবেচনা করা হতে পারে। অতএব বাংলাদেশের প্রথম শ্রেণীর ক্রিকেটের মান নিয়ে প্রশ্ন থেকেই যাচ্ছে।

এবিষয়ে নির্বাচক মিনহাজুল আবেদীন নান্নুর আক্ষেপ করে বলেন,“যে ভাবে আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটে ব্যস্ত থাকতে হবে আমাদের ক্রিকেটারদের জাতীয় লিগ হবে কি করে। একটি দলের জন্য ১৫ জন করে ক্রিকেটারই তো পাচ্ছি না। বুঝতে পারছি না কি হবে।”

আগে জাতীয় লিগের দল ছিলো ছয়টি। সেখানে চলতি মৌসুম থেকে জাতীয় লিগে খেলবে আটটি দল। রংপুর বিভাগ এবং ঢাকা মহানগরকে জাতীয় লিগে খেলার অনুমতি দেওয়া হয়েছে। ১৫ জন করে হলেও আট দলের জন্য ১২০ জন ক্রিকেটার লাগবে। ২০ জন করে হলে সংখ্যাটা গিয়ে দাঁড়াবে ১৬০ জনে। এত বেশি সংখ্যক প্রথমশ্রেণীর ক্রিকেটার পাওয়া প্রায় অসম্ভব।

টুর্নামেন্ট কমিটির সম্পাদক হাফিজ উদ্দিন জোয়ার্দার চিন্তায় পড়ে গেছেন মানসম্পন্ন ক্রিকেটার না থাকায়। সঙ্গে মাঠের অপ্রতুলতাও ভাবাচ্ছে তাকে। বলেন,“একটি ম্যাচ দুই দিনে শেষ হয়ে যাবে এমন ক্রিকেটার দিয়ে তো জাতীয় লিগ হতে পারে না। তা হলে মানুষজন আমাদেরকে গালি দিবে। মাঠও তো পাবো না। সিলেট এবং বগুড়া স্টেডিয়াম ছাড়া ভালো মাঠ কোথায়।”

এবারের জাতীয় লিগের ভেন্যু হিসেবে বেছে নেওয়া হয়েছে রাজশাহী, বগুড়া, বিকেএসপি, সিলেট ও যশোর স্টেডিয়ামকে। খেলা হবে দুই ধাপে। প্রথম পর্বে প্রতিটি দল একে অন্যের বিপক্ষে খেলবে। সেখান থেকে শীর্ষ চার দল ২০১২ সালের মার্চে খেলবে সুপার লিগে। পয়েন্ট তালিকার শীর্ষ দুই দল নিয়ে হবে পাঁচদিনের ফাইনাল ম্যাচ। তবে প্রথম রাউন্ড থেকে বাদ যাওয়া চার দলের মধ্যে তিন দিনের ম্যাচ করার প্রস্তাবনাও আছে।

অক্টোবরের ১৬ বা ১৮ তারিখ থেকে জাতীয় লিগের খেলা শুরুর কথা। টুর্নামেন্ট কমিটির চেয়ারম্যান গাজী আশরাফ হোসেন লিপু অসুস্থ হওয়ায় রোববার সভায় হয়নি। কবে থেকে জাতীয় লিগ শুরু করা যাবে তা জানতে আরো কয়েকদিন অপেক্ষা করতে হবে।

I think it's silly to have a big gap between the first round and the final. First round in October- November and then final in March? WTF. They are trying really hard to make sure national team players are involved in the final. NCL is for all players, not just national team players.

many more teams doesnt necessarily increase quality....fighting for a place in those teams and healthy competition does.....why the heck we need 8 teams. should have 6 teams with a strong squad and make sure that cricketers earn their 1st class cricketer status

Is this a joke? We couldnt find players, hence we postpone the first class tournament? We should really think whether we have the mindset of a Test playing nation instead of blaming India or Boycott for not taking our test team seriously... Just when we lost to Zimbabwe, we decide to push out or cancel NCL makes a mockery of our board.

The reality is our board lacks the vision and forward thinking attitude to improve the long term cricket. They would rather go for flashy new cricket channel, academy, stadiums etc. than concentrate on the core of cricket,,, first class cricket!!

so develop the players to be good enough to play first-class cricket......you think the other test countries postpone their first-class comps because the national team and A team are playing and some players are injured? so ridiculous. even if they don't think players are good enough they should still do the best they can do and go ahead with the tournament. but the thing is to develop good players you have to teach good attitudes and techniques from a young age (not once someone hits the national setup).

NO, they postpone, international assignments instead, for domestic. We don't afford that. We have to match our timings with their desire.

Man, There is no machine for developing players, they only get developed through coaching and playing matches .... and it will take time to increase that pool. BCB has just created scope for 30 more players if not more by creating 2 new teams, Had been Appointing coaches and also empowering DSAs recently .. results will not come in a day or year. Its easy to say develop players, but hard to make. All BCB can do is create opportunity, rest will depend on the players and coaches at work.

Having said, that I don't disagree to BCB's lack of planning and slow reactions etc etc.. and they also aren't happy having political interference and inability to implement plans due to a few powerful & corrupt people inside. All part of our political culture and how things work. We have to be realistic, its not easy to shake off everything overnight. So lets have reasonable expectations.
