48 burnt alive (still counting) in building fire in Old Dhaka

The worst fact is that there is no way to stop it happen again. People are staying in the same building where chemical are stored and factories are run. I have no clue what to be done with Old Dhaka.

রুনা-রত্নার বিয়ে আজ গণভবনে


পুরান ঢাকার নবাব কাটরার রুনা-রত্নার বিয়ে আজ। বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠান হচ্ছে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার সরকারি বাসভবন গণভবনে। ‘মা’ হিসেবে প্রধানমন্ত্রী কনে রুনা ও রত্নাকে তুলে দেবেন বর জামিল ও সুমনের হাতে। প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ব্যক্তিগত উদ্যোগে গতকাল রাতেই বিয়ের সব কেনাকাটা শেষ হয়েছে।
গতকাল সন্ধ্যায় লালমাটিয়ায় মহিলা অধিদপ্তরের আশ্রয়কেন্দ্রে রুনা-রত্নার গায়েহলুদ অনুষ্ঠান অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। তাদের কয়েকজন আত্মীয় এতে অংশ নেন। আয়োজন হয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর দপ্তরের কর্মকর্তাদের তত্ত্বাবধানে। কনে দুই বোন দেশবাসীর কাছে দোয়া চান। আর তাঁরা কামনা করেন প্রধানমন্ত্রীর দীর্ঘায়ু।
রুনা-রত্নার মায়ের ইচ্ছা ছিল দুই বোনকে একই দিনে বিয়ে দেবেন। বড় বোন রত্নার বিয়ে আগেই ঠিক ছিল। ছোট বোন রুনার পানচিনির দিন ঘটে সেই ভয়াবহ অগ্নিকাণ্ড। পারলারে সাজতে গিয়ে বেঁচে যান দুই বোন। আর বাসায় রুনার মাসহ নিকটাত্মীয় আর হবু বর জামিলের পরিবারের সদস্যসহ মোট ২১ জন আগুনে পুড়ে মারা যায়।
অনিশ্চয়তার অথৈ সাগরে পড়ে যাওয়া এতিম দুই বোনের অভিভাবকের দায়িত্ব নেন স্বয়ং প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা। অনুষ্ঠান করে গয়নাগাটি দিয়ে বিয়ে দেওয়ার ঘোষণা দেন তিনি। দুই বরের বিয়ের যাবতীয় পোশাক-পরিচ্ছদ দেবেন তিনি। দুই মেয়ের ভবিষ্যতের কথা চিন্তা করে বরদের চাকরিরও ব্যবস্থা করছেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী। বরযাত্রীদের জন্য গণভবনে খাওয়া-দাওয়ারও আয়োজন করা হয়েছে।
বিয়ের প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে দিনভর ব্যস্ত ছিলেন প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সহকারী একান্ত সচিব সাইফুজ্জামান শিখর। জানতে চাইলে তিনি প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, বিয়ের সব আয়োজন সম্পন্ন। আজ সন্ধ্যায় দুই বোনের বিয়ে হবে।
সোমবার রাতে গণভবনে রুনা-রত্না, তাঁদের হবু বর এবং পরিবারের সদস্যদের ডেকে নেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী। কথা ছিল, বড় বোন রত্নার বিয়ে হবে আজ। রুনার হবু বরের প্রবাসী ছোট ভাই দেশে ফিরলে তাঁর বিয়ে সম্পন্ন হবে বলে কথা ঠিক হয়। কিন্তু প্রধানমন্ত্রীর অভিভাবকত্ব বলে কথা। গতকাল দুপুরে রুনার বর জামিলের পরিবার ঢাকা মহানগর আওয়ামী লীগের ভারপ্রাপ্ত সভাপতি এম এ আজিজ এবং সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক শাহ আলম মুরাদের কাছে আজই বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয়। খবর পেয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ‘আলহামদুলিল্লাহ’ বলে বিয়েতে সম্মতি দেন।
প্রধানমন্ত্রীর নির্দেশে রুনা-রত্না আর জামিল-সুমনের বিয়ের বাজার করেন এম এ আজিজ ও শাহ আলম মুরাদ। বায়তুল মোকাররম মার্কেটের গ্রামীণ জুয়েলার্স থেকে দুই বোনের জন্য আট ভরি করে ১৬ ভরি স্বর্ণের গয়না কেনা হয়। কনে ও বরদের জন্য বিয়ের সব কাপড় কেনা হয়। এমনকি বরদের জন্য দ্রুততার সঙ্গে স্যুটও বানানো হয়। গত রাতে এই প্রতিবেদকের সঙ্গে কথা বলার সময় শাহ আলম মুরাদ মিরপুর বেনারসিপল্লী থেকে কনের জন্য বেনারসি শাড়ি কিনছিলেন।
এম এ আজিজ প্রথম আলোকে জানান, ছোট বোন রুনার আজ কাবিন হবে। জামিলের পরিবারের কয়েকজন সদস্য মারা যাওয়ায় ৪০ দিনের শোক শেষে রুনাকে উঠিয়ে নেওয়া হবে। তবে রত্না আজই স্বামীর বাড়িতে চলে যাবেন।
গত শুক্রবার সকালে হাসপাতালে আহতদের দেখতে গিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী রুনা-রত্নার করুণ কাহিনি জানতে পারেন। রুনার বিয়ের পানচিনির দিনে অগ্নিকাণ্ডে দুই পক্ষের নিকটাত্মীয়রা মারা যান। প্রধানমন্ত্রী সেদিনই দুই বোনের সব দায়িত্ব কাঁধে তুলে নেন।
গত সোমবার গণভবনে দুই বোনকে জড়িয়ে ধরে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘আমিও এক দিন ঘুম থেকে উঠে শুনি, আমার পরিবারের কেউ নেই। তোমাদের দুঃখ, কষ্ট, বেদনা আমার থেকে আর কে ভালো বুঝবে!’

At first, looking at the picture/title, I thought it was about a pioneering lesbian marriage in Bangladesh. But alas, its not.

( for once) I support the Pm in this step But has any of you seen the news recently? Maybe last night's news? Another family , well a brother was claiming that they were gonna arranging a wedding for his sister and all the money that he's taken lone and jewellery that they bought for the wedding had been burnt!?! and now they're like '"amar boner ki hobey""

MY first impression- umm... maybe they are trying to take advantage of the step taken by the PM, in how she got these ladies married. ektu shondehojonok money hochilo.
But then....I was like.. maybe its true

This fire has burnt down so many people's dreams and hopes.. its really sad and will take a very long time to overcome. Abbu was reading out a story from prothom alo I think it was...and on that day.. a guy was flying to the middle east to work, and his mother didn't go to the airport with him because she didn't want to travel because of her age. So The mother was the only one in the house while the rest of them went to say Goodbye to this guy. When the Family returned form the airport... they saw their house burnt down :'(
I can't imagine what the other guy must have gone through when he had heard the news! It pretty much broke my heart! When I listen/read some of these stories... it is incredibly difficult to fight back tears....

I just hope Bangladesh has learnt a very big lesson from this.

I think PM one is political stunt - which Jamat inititated. Marriage is meant to be a festival. How one could be in joyous mode when he/she lost all of his/her near and dear one few days. If PM really wanted to do it she could do it when the tears are dried. Nobody has better experience than our PM on losing all family members in a single instance.
I visited the site more than once both for professional and personal interest. What you are seeing and hearing are sanitized version. Media should be applauded for this. It was a complete failure of urban management. Fire service could not get in because high voltage line was so low that it could touch the vehicle not because the road was narrow or the buildings were accessible from one side. the buildings were actually corner plots of three roads. There was no fire hydrenet. the nearest source of water was Sahidullah hall pond; more than a km away. Fire service does not have any air support so that they could pick up the people who were at the roof. Two three lives could have been saved if fire service had air-lifting facility; we are hearing that it would be bought soon since NTV incident.
