WC2019 was disappointing but...

My pre-tournament prediciton was that we'd win 3-5 games (3 if we played really poorly, 5 if we exceeded expectations, with 4 being a "par" performance).

Assuming that we'd have beaten Sri Lanka, we would have finished with exactly 4 wins.

But lets be frank, in this format, only the best 4 sides will make it to the semifinals and Bangladesh aren't amongst the top 4 sides. The reason are many (batting while strong, still tends to choke like against Pakistan), fielding is mediocre at best, and most importantly, our bowling is too unidimensional.

Obviously its disappointing that we couldn't beat Pakistan. Again disappointing that we came within 30 runs of beating India, but were still comfortably beaten. Further frustrating that batsmen did their jobs and scored 333 but we lost to Australia.

That having been said, I think luck plays a factor. In all of our critical must-win games, we had to chase. Chasing was very difficult at this world cup. 27 games were won by the team batting 1st and only 14 won by teams chasing. That is almost a 2-1 ratio.

If you ignore matches against the 3 weakest sides, Afghanistan, WI, and Sri Lanka (finished 6th only because of 2 rain outs), then the results are even more stark. 16 wins for the team batting 1st, and only 4 for the teams chasing a target. That is a 4-1 ratio.

This meant it was very much a "set a target" tournament, and Bangladesh were already at a disadvantage when they lost the toss against Australia, India, and Pakistan. All 3 could have possibly been won, given the batting form we had.

Further look at the highest successful chases in this world cup:

Bangladesh 322 (vs weak WI bowling attack)
India 265 (vs weak SL bowling attack)
New Zealand 245 (vs weak BD bowling attack)
New Zealand 242 (vs SA)
Pakistan 238 (vs NZ)

The highest successful chase against a good bowling attack was only 242 by NZ and 238 by Pakistan. This was very much a tournament where if you scored 250+, you would most likely defend it and win.

The quality of individual players can certainly differentiate the teams who has upper hand,

When Bairstow bounced back Tamim went further down the drain
When England produce Roy we produce Soummya
When India produce Hardik we produce Shabbir
When Australia produce Maxwell we produce Miraz
When Pakistan has Shaeen Shah/Ameer we have Rahi/Rubel
When India has Kumar to support Bumrah we have Mash to trouble other bowlers

We should have batted first vs England
We should have scored a bit more and won that NZ match

We were a far better team even with 10 players and finally,

Yes, each player except Shakib/Fizz, including captain and officials need some punishment for that pathetic performance against PAK.

Bangladesh wanted to go to the semifinals. But how? You can not go to the moon without rockets and astronauts. Bangladesh, as a nation, prefers dreaming over reality. This world cup was a Shakib show. Throughout his career he was good. This time he took himself to another level. Time and time again he sent a message to his team mates, cricket board and to his nation: "I CAN NOT DO IT ALONE". Now he has proved his statement. This might be his last world cup. I am not sure, will he be interested to play 2023 world cup with such a mediocre team? Only time will tell

We didn't do well because of the following:
1. Tamim couldn't handle pressure. If he had scored the runs he made in ireland, we could have won few more games.

2. Mashrafi completely became useless. He was picking wickets and giving us key breakthroughs before the WC. All of that went down the drain.

3. We dropped opposition key players. Rohit, Warner, K. Williamson etc. We failed in the big moments that turned the match.

4. Sri Lanka game washout. We could have found momentum by winning that game.

Good points raised but NZ played like the weakest team of the tournament in their last 3 matches and still advanced. They're extremely lucky to have run out of runway to fall one more spot. Also until the very last match we thought we were better than not just SL but Pak also. We started well, had bad luck in the middle, and couldn't muster the fighting spirit of 2015 despite superhuman effort from Shakib. That's why it was a failed campaign.

Someone mentioned about Jason Roy who was around for while, had the the explosiveness. If people remember well, Jason played in the 2nd BPL for Chittagong Kings and was good buddy with Taskin. Look how things transformed. Now, Jason Roy is one of worlds most explosive, powerful, big hitting opener who scores not only 100s but big 100s! And all that camw about with England changing their ways, backing likes of Roy, and others and told them to go out and express yourselves. Bangladesh openers look unsure what to do, tamed, Sarkar seems like is a confused kid who wants to get going but thinks about playing a longer innings, management probably confusing him future by telling him to stay at the there long, face more balls. He doesnt know whether to go like Jayasuria or bat like Ganguly. One thing for sure, it looks in the middle of nowhere. Tamato doesn’t know the difference between odi and test, test and t20, he plays test in ODI, t20 in test.
