Lack of condifence was the reason of defeat for Bangladesh. India would have to work hard to win after scoring 245, if the opposition wasn't Bangladesh. Bangladesh made an excellent start. Tapash got Sourav in the second ball of the day. They were able to maintatin the pressure from that stage. Tapash and Nazmul balled in great line and length to Tendulkar. Finally the duty fell on the shoulder of reliable Dravid, companion was energetic Kaif. They took the score to a respectable figure. Early return of Sriram and debutant Dhoni denied India from a big score. Agarkar and Pathan increased to score by some late slogging. He couldn't even rotate the strike by taking few singles. Captain Habiul trieed to keep the scorecard moving, though. But the pressure was increasing due to slow run rate. And the innings lost pace after Ashraful got out. Aftab tried to score runs quickly when he came in the middle. Then 15 runs came from one Harbhajan over, and the pressure was reduced a bit. They should've more prudent at that stage. After hitting six in the previous Harbhajan over, Aftab tried to repeat in Sriram's over, and got himself caught near the roundary rope. Bashar was trying to score quicker too, and finally gifted the wicket to Sriram. Later, Khaled Mashud's cameo gave crowds something to cheer. Bangladesh lost the match by 11 runs. The lack of planning on chasing the score was very evident. It was too late when they tried to get out of shell. Bangladesh gifted few easy runs to Kaif and Agarkar by fielding lapses. They should be ashamed for the sloppiness in field, especially when many of their players are around 20 years old. Home team supporters might be pleased thinking that they finally reached near the Indian total. But if you think deeper, then you can see that Bangladesh lost the chance to go ahead in the series by 1-0 carelessly by their own faults."

BANGLADESH missed a golden opportunity to spring a surprise and beat India in the first one-day game at Chittagong. Having been set a target of less than five runs an over, the Bangladeshis, by their overcautious approach which betrayed a lack of self belief, ensured that India were able to end up winning a game that they would have struggled to win against other sides.

Bangladesh couldn’t have begun the game better than they did by getting the Indian captain out for a duck off the second ball of the match and they kept the Indians on a tight leash after that. Even when Sachin Tendulkar tried to use strong-arm tactics he was not able to do so because of the fine length that Nazmul and Baishya bowled.

It was left to old reliable Rahul Dravid and the enterprising Mohammed Kaif to repair the innings and give it some substance with their partnership. Kaif ran well between the wickets and with Dravid looking rock solid the anxieties of the dressing room would have been considerably lessened.

The quick dismissals of Sriram and newcomer Dhoni gave Bangladesh another chance to restrict India to a reasonable score but some big hitting by Agarkar and Pathan ensured India got a healthy total on the board. The six that Pathan hit off the last ball of the Indian innings, would have given the Indian team the belief that they could not lose the game now and that would have multiplied after the feeble start that the Bangla openers gave their team.

What Bangladesh needed was a sure start that would have ensured that the wickets could be kept in hand for a final assault. Nafi’s innings was hard to understand, for he wasn’t even able to take the singles and thus give the captain the strike. Habibul Bashar being more experienced would have been able to rotate the strike better, but the pressure built up as runs dried up and after Ashraful was out, the innings went downhill till Aftab decided to play freely.

One Harbhajan over, where they got 15 runs released the pressure considerably and at that stage what Bangladesh needed was to play sensibly. But young Aftab got a bit carried away with that one over from Harbhajan and in trying to repeat it against Sriram holed out in the deep, which is what Saleh too did and that left Bangladesh with very little batting to come. Basher opened out too, but the asking rate was climbing and he too perished to Sriram.

Khaled Mashud then brought the crowd to its feet playing the reverse sweep and other brilliant shots and though the score looks closer to India’s, it really wasn’t a close finish. If anything it was Bangladesh’s lack of self belief that saw them lose the game. They didn’t have to do anything drastic at the start of their chase, but eventually had to do so, as they just let things drift out of control.

Even in the field they were dozy so much so that Kaif and Agarkar took the extra run as the fielder was admiring the ball in his hands. At one stage it looked as easy as taking candy from an old man. If the ages of the Bangladeshi players are real, then they should be embarrassed of that for most of them are in their teens or early 20s or so they say.
The crowd may have gone back happy that Bangladesh got near the Indian total and it wasn’t an annihilation, but if they have a cold dispassionate look they will realise that their team messed up a chance to go one up in the three match series.
