Angry BCB criticise Whatmore

Board unhappy with interest in India

BCB criticise Whatmore

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has criticised Dav Whatmore after he expressed his interest in succeeding Greg Chappell as India coach.

The BCB were upset that Whatmore threw his hat in the ring while he was still in charge of Bangladesh's World Cup campaign. "We are in the middle of a very high-profile tournament. At this stage any such interest of the coach would certainly distract our team," Riazuddin Al Mamun, a joint-secretary of the BCB, said.

"He should not have said so, when we have a contract with him." Whatmore's contract with BCB ends in May.

Whatmore conveyed his keenness to coach India after Chappell handed in his resignation on April 4. "If there is a position and an opportunity there, I will be very interested," he told the television channel CNN-IBN.

Whatmore was at the helm when Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996 and has coached Bangladesh to some impressive wins against big opponents.

Seriously? I apologise if thats the case. I was just surprised by the news. Adding fuel to the fire i guess....This is HUUUGE news IMO. No chance of an extended contract. Either Whatmore is gonna get upset and resign, or BCB wont offer him one. Speaking personally, I reaaaaly hope he stays....

I don't know if this has been discussed or not. In case Dav leaves for India, who do you think should be our next coach?

My vote is for "Richard McInnes". He has the winning attitude, and he had been in Dhaka. He knows ins and outs of our own young guns like Tamim. He found them. I always thought Dav is reaping the fruits of hard work put forth by coaches like Richard and a few other BD coaches involved in high performance squads/academy. But still I appreciate what Dav has done for us.

I did not like what DW said, but I disliked more about this reaction from BCB. DW's interest in the Indian job probably already dampened his relation with players, now BCB's reaction has intensified the situation. Like Dav, BCB should have also kept their mouth shut about this matter until world cup is over, and then tell Dav to just leave after May.

I didnt like BCBs reaction. They should have been more matured and professional. Their statement can't stop Dav from going, if he wants to.

BCB should have waited and not given it much importance.

BCB is giving a picture of panic at the thought of Dav's departure.

Highly immatured.

BANFAN,
if you were a board member of BCB and not panic on reading what Watmore (a contracted coach of yours) said to the media while the most important tournament is going on then I'd say can you be my boss, please?

If I was in their shoes I would panic. One day I am trying to think how big the contract extention be and the next day I wake to the news that he may not be interested in the contract extention all together.

Coaches switch jobs all the time. But most of the deals are done behind the closed doors. Becuase this affects the players, fans. Let me put this scenario in a different way that may allow you to understand how grand this is. Say the team is in playoffs (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS etc.) and the team is down 0-2 in 7 game first round. Now the coach says I would love to coach NY Knicks for the tradition, money and lime light they have and how would that team management react? On top of it the contract extension is up in couple of months. let me know what you think.

As for those who parallels this to a job, you certainly don't go public saying you want to switch job for a competitor. That also is done behind the closed door untill it is finalized. When the job offer is not there why would you openly say you are interested. You are selling yourself short.

My words would hv bn exactly the same...
well said The Watcher.

If he wants to go, fair enough, we will let him.
But i just wanted a decent fairwell to the man who has done a lot for Bangladesh cricket over the past 4 years and has taken us to a new height.

After Gordon Greenidge debacle, i dont want to see a "important contributor" to our game leaving on a bad note.

Thank you Dav for what you have done for our team and the country.
I wish you all the best of luck to your next tenure, wherever it is.

To BCB-> shut your mouth and start looking for a new coach. utilise your time on a positive action.

I think BCB did 1/2 right !
DW showed his poor taste once again. He lacks of professionalsm for sure. He should be waited untill his contract done with BCB to go for a open media job seek ad!!

I am trying to cheering up and wishing from the heart that this debacle will not have an impact on our remaining games.

well this is a bit too much i think. there was no need to call for an "emergency meeting" to discuss the fate of Whatmore. things could've been sorted out after the world cup. there was no need of going public with it. "emergency meeting" - as if the world is coming to an end. knee-jerk reaction, and i really don't think this was necessary in the middle of a world cup competition.
