কার্ভবল, একটি সাংকেতিক নাম। এই সাংকেতিক নামের পিছনে আছে একটি মানুষ যে তার স্বজাতির কয়েক লক্ষ লোকের মৃত্যুর জন্য অনেকাংশে দায়ী। ঠিক দায়ী না বলে বলা উচিত একটি জাতির বিভীষিকাময় পরিণতির শুরু হয়েছিল তার বর্ণিত কিছু তথ্যের সূত্র ধরে বা সেই তথ্যকে ব্যবহার করে। সমস্যা একটাই, তার দেয়া সেই তথ্য ছিল একটি সাজানো মিথ্যা। বিশ্বের গোয়েন্দা সংস্থাগুলির ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে বড় ব্লান্ডার হল এই কার্ভবল, যার দেয়া মিথ্যা তথ্য হয়ে উঠল ইরাক যুদ্ধের সপক্ষের সবচেয়ে বড় সাক্ষ্য।

নভেম্বর ১৯৯৯, মিউনিখের আন্তর্জাতিক এয়ারপোর্টে একজন ইরাকি ছাত্রের আগমন এবং রাজনৈতিক আশ্রয় প্রার্থনা। প্রাথমিক জবানবন্দিতে সে জানালো যে সাদ্দাম সরকার তাকে সুনির্দিষ্ট প্রশাণ ছাড়াই সরকারী অর্থ আত্মসাতের অভিযোগ তুলে কারাদন্ড বা এর চেয়ে ভয়াবহ কোন শাস্তি দিতে চাইছে। তার পক্ষে দেশে ফিরে যাওয়া জীবনের জন্য হুমকি স্বরূপ। এর পরপরই কি এক অজ্ঞাত কারণে তার জবানবন্দি প্রত্যাহার। নতুন জবানবন্দিতে সে জার্মান গোয়েন্দা সংস্থাকে বিস্তারিতভাবে জানালো সাদ্দাম হোসেন এর Weapon of mass destruction এবং জীবাণু অস্ত্রের গোপনীয় তথ্য।

সে জার্মান কর্তৃপক্ষকে জানালো সে নিজে সাদ্দাম সরকারের জীবাণু অস্ত্র কর্মসূচিতে যুক্ত ছিলো এবং কয়েকটি ফ্লিট এনথ্রাক্স জীবাণু বহন এবং বিস্তারে সক্ষম যান ডিজাইন এবং তৈরীতে সহযোগিতা করেছে। রাতারাতি সাড়া পড়ে গেল গোয়েন্দা মাধ্যমগুলিতে। তার জবানবন্দী জার্মান পুলিশের কাছ থেকে অনুদিত হয়ে সি আই এর কাছে পৌছালো। মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র তখন ইরাক যুদ্ধে যাবার জন্য উপযুক্ত এভিডেন্স খুজছে। তাদের কাছে এই মহামুল্যবান এই তথ্য পৌছাবার সাথে সাথেই শুরু হল গোয়েন্দা কর্মযজ্ঞ।

প্রশ্ন হলো, রাজনৈতিক আশ্রয় প্রার্থী অনেকেই নানারকমের গল্প ফেদে বসে, তাহলে কার্ভবল এই তথ্যকে কেন গোয়েন্দা সংস্থাগুলি সত্য হিসাবে ধরে নিল? কার্ভবল পেশায় ছিল একজন কেমিকেল ইন্জিনিয়ার। তাই জীবাণু অস্ত্র বিষয়ে একটি বিশ্বাসযোগ্য উপস্থাপনা তার পক্ষে সম্ভব ছিল। তার বিশ্বাস ছিল তার গল্পে ফাকফোকর থাকলে, গোয়েন্দা সংস্থাগুলিই সেই ফাক পূরণে তাকে সাহায্য করবে। হলোও তাই, কার্ভবলকে ইন্টারোগেশন করে, জার্মান গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা এবং সি আই এ মিলে জীবাণু অস্ত্রের একটা বিস্তারিত নেটওয়ার্ক সিস্টেম দাড় করিয়ে ফেলল যার অস্তিত্ব কোন কালেই ছিলনা।

জার্মান এবং মার্কিন গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার মধ্যকার পারস্পরিক অবিশ্বাস কার্ভবল এর মিথ্যাকে একটি শক্ত এভিডেন্স হিসাবে প্রতিষ্ঠায় গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে। জার্মান গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা কখনোই সি আই এ কে কার্ভবল এর সাথে সরাসরি সাক্ষাত বা ইন্টারোগেট করতে দেয়নি। পরিবর্তে তারা তাদের ইন্টারোগেশন ট্রান্সক্রিপ্টকে অনুবাদ এবং বিশ্লেষণ করে ১০০টিরও বেশী রিপোর্ট পাঠায় সি আই এর কাছে। রিপোর্টের বিশ্বাসযোগ্যতা এবং গোয়েন্দা স্বার্থ সংরক্ষণের জন্য এই রিপোর্টগুলিতে ভিন্ন নাম ব্যবহার করা হয়যার ফলে ধারণা হয় যে বিভিন্ন সূত্র থেকে অভিন্ন তথ্য পাওয়া যাচ্ছে। এভাবেই একটি মিথ্যা কাহিনী পরিণত হয় শক্ত প্রমান এ।

এভাবে একজন নামহীন ছাত্রের দেয়া প্রশ্নসাপেক্ষ এবং মিথ্যা তথ্যের উপর ভিত্তি করে গড়ে উঠল আমেরিকা এবং বৃটেনের ইরাকব যুদ্ধে সপক্ষে যাওয়ার ক্যাম্পেইন। কলিন পাওয়েল, জর্জ বুশ, সি আই এ ডিরেক্টর জর্জ টেনেট এবং বৃটিশ প্রধানমন্ত্রী টনি ব্লেয়ার সকলের বক্তব্যে উঠে আসল এই নির্ভরযোগ্য (!!) গোয়েন্দা তথ্যে রেফারেন্স এবং একে কেন্দ্র করেই আবর্তিত হলো জাতিসংঘে Weapons of mass destruction এর অস্তিত্বের ব্যাপারে বিস্তারিত রিপোর্ট।

উন্নত জীবনযাপনের মোহে ইওরোপের একটি উন্নত দেশে রাজনৈতিক আশ্রয় লাভ করার বিনিময়ে নিজ মাতৃভূমিকে এই ধ্বংসস্তুপে পরিণত করার এই কাহিনী পুলিত্জার পুরস্কার বিজয়ী সাংবাদিক বব ড্রগিন এর ৭ বছরব্যাপী অনুসন্ধানের ভিত্তিতে লেখা বই Curveball এ। ইতিমধ্যেই সাড়া জাগানো এই অনুসন্ধানী রিপোর্টটি অন্যায়ভাবে চাপিয়ে দেয়া ইরাক যুদ্ধের বিরুদ্ধে ইউরোপ জুড়ে নতুনভাবে জনমত সৃষ্টিতে ব্যাপক ভূমিকা পালন করছে।

প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে কার্ভবল এর গল্প না হলে কি আমেরিকা বা বৃটেন ইরাক যুদ্ধে যেতো না? সম্ভবত: ইরাক যুদ্ধ এড়ানো যেতো না, যু্ক্তরাষ্ট্র মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের তেল এবং তাদের মিত্র দেশগুলির স্বার্থে কোন না কোন ছুতায় অবশ্যই ইরাক আক্রমণ করতো। কিন্তু কার্ভবল তাদের সেই উদ্দেশ্যপূরণে নিজের অজান্তেই একটি বিরাট ভূমিকা পালন করে। আমেরিকার যুদ্ধে যাওয়াটা সহজ হয়ে যায়। মানবজাতির ইতিহাসে স্বজাতির ধ্বংসের জন্য এককভাবে এত বেশী গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা কেই পালন করেনি এবং ভবিষ্যতেও তা করার সম্ভাবনা কম।

Don't just blame carveball for this. He said what many other said before and will say in the future. A make up story to make himself important.

The only reason his story become so signification is that he said what some people wanted to hear. some people were waiting for the lamest excuse possible to go after Iraq and he gave him that. I don't think anything would have been different if carveball did not exist. they would find another way. according to Fahrenheit 9/11, bush was simply commanding to bring proof against iraq. not find if there is any proof, but bring him proof. so intelligence did just that. they had several chance to validate carveball's claim but they did not bother with it probably because they did not care. he asked for proof, and they gave it to him. would carveball make any difference. I don't think so. they would have find someone or something else one way or another.

now it looks to me some people are trying to say, its not our fault, its his fault.

Well, I am not blaming Curveball for the war, he simply acted as the catalyst for the war as he simply said what America and it's allies wanted to hear.

He was exploited, but provided the ignition for the devastating attack on his motherland.

How many times a Bangladeshi fled the country just after a govt change and trying to take "political" refuse in a developed world citing fear of life and harassment of family since the change of political figures in the country.
Countless numbers of times.
That doesnt mean those hapless people doesnt love Bangladesh.
its more like they are desperate enough to do anything to make a living, earn some money and feed them and their family.
