The West Indies (also known as the Caribbean) constitutes a fairly large number of island and littoral nations. Some are independent and some are dependencies. These states are not very homogeneous. At various points in history some were Spanish colonies, some British and some French and a few Dutch and Danish.

The old British colonies were once historically called the British West Indies. The countries that constitute this grouping are:

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It is from these nations AND the ex-British colony of Guyana in South America that the West Indies Cricket Team is formed.
