Should Saurav Ganguly \"rested\"
It has been long since Saurav Ganguly been on form. Should he be rested against the ODIs against Srilanka and South African and the new kids be given opportunity ? Should he be asked to go to nets and take enough training and play at domestic level and get into forms and then be taken to the Indian team ? Should Rahul Dravid be given capitancy of team India ?

Its difficult to say. On one hand you have his huge one-day credentials and almost compelled to afford him all the luxury and space to regain the form, and on the other hand, such a prolonged period of inertness makes for a case for him to be replaced by a younger player with future in mind. It is a very difficult job. Also, his success as the captain of India is well documented and at a time like this, the need for a strong captain is the order of the day. Plus, I am not really sold on Dravid's captaincy. Minus Tendulkar at present, I see no chance for India to drop Ganguly. It will leave Dravid as the only senior experienced batsman, who himself is going through a leaner patch considering the lofty standards that he has set for himself. Right now, India's batting order is in disarray. Almost every game the order is rearranged as if Chappell is looking for someone to click at a particular order. No wonder the batting has been below par for India. So, every meager score for Ganguly is even more magnified given the situation. I will keep him just as Aussies are sticking with Hayden for a while. But, when its time for them to be replaced ( hayden or ganguly ), it must be made sure that it is permanent and not a knee-jerk reaction.

No. He should not be "rested". The new kids simply aren't better than out of form Ganguly. India should follow the example of Australia and continue to play him like Mark Taylor.

Spitfire, Mark Taylor was never a burden for Australia, whereas our Danguly is . He is occupying a the space of a specialist batsman and not performing at all for too long.
May be he can be used as the 12th man super sub so he can just captain the side and not bat.
I guess his days are done, he should let other youngsters come, there is no dearth of performers in Indian cricket. Danguly is exposed , even a gully cricket fast bowler will start bowling short on body to ganguly.
Ganguly thanks for everything you have done, please retire with honor and grace.
Cheers !

Does "Test Opener" count as position of specialist batsman? And IIRC, Mark Taylor didn't score a fifty in Tests for a ridiculously long period of time. But his team wasn't losing because others performed and he didn't have an enemy like Indian media.
Ganguly's ODI stats since WC2003:
avg. 31.41, 50's- 10 (90's 2)
Sehwag's ODI stats since WC2003:
avg. 28.62, 50's- 7 (90's 1), 100's- 2

mark taylor was just a liability to the ODI team very much like ganguli now for india. difference is with ganguli the case is more severe. the golden rule "select your best 11 and then select the captain from among them"

Except Dravid, nobody performed consistently well in ODIs since WC2003. Ganguly is just one of them, see my Sehwag vs. Ganguly comparison above. Dropping only Ganguly would be a huge injustice.

Well if he continues to play like this what he did today some day he will be dropped from the team permanently. He will be not playing in the World Cup. It is better to look for the long run. Drop him for the series against South Africa and Srilanka. It will hurt him. Give him time for rehabitation, tranning, playing domestic cricket, practise in the nets, make fire in his belly, hurt him, and he will come back with more determination, skill, and statistics and more runs. This is not doing any good at the present time.

sehwag is a lot better player than ganguli. most of ganguli's runs have come slashing the spinners. he is always weak against genuine pace. whereas sehwag is more all round and scored runs against good attacks. sehwag's av may be little less than ganguli after WC2003, but i think u will find his SR far better.

i think ganguly will come back, dominate for some time and retire with glory. i don't think he should be rested. with all his experience, i'm pretty sure he's capable of a come-back.
besides, who'd you replace him with?

If he plays in this current form for another 12 games, i.e., in the home series against Srilanka and Southafrica, i am sure he will be dropped and he will not be able to get back into the team. He is a proud man. If he is wounded he will strike back very hard. Thats why I wanted him to be rested off for atleast 5 ODIs. Remember years years years back when Dravid when he was young and was dropped he came back with a very good fight to the ODIs and become more consistent.
See history whenever a player is not taken for 4 to 5 ODIs or a series they bounce back very hard if they are good players. If he player is dropped for a longer time we will never see him again. Look at Bevan do we remember him. He was kept for some games without form and then dropped permanently. My policy is say you are off for 4 ODIs go back to nets and practise and go back and play domestic matches. Get back to the team in good form. If you are good form door is opened. If you are not come back in good form.
Not
I have played very well in the past. I wanted to be in team through out my life until I am 36 to 38 year old when I am retiring without dropped for a single game even when I am not productive for some matches. I wont allow youngesters to be given a chance.

That's why India shouldn't think about dropping Ganguly yet
After 1996, India has got only one batsman who performs consistently (Sehwag)
