That incident of KM was slightly different. That was a coup staged by 'Jashad' under the direction of Col Taher.

Immediately after KM became Army Chief, There were processions calling for trial of Mujib's killing, chanting slogans of BAKSHAL etc all in fav of AL. One such procession was lead by KM's mother and there were large front page pictures of her with Mujib's picture in her hand.

All the contemporary events of '74 like; Acute food Shortage -- Bakshal -- killing of Mujib and following division & tensions already took the political scenario of the country to boiling point. This public potrayal of a possible immediate return of AL/BAKSHAL in power, posed a great risk of leading the opposing parties into violent confrontation, there was a great fear of further horror in everyone's mind.

Colonel Taher used this fearful situation to organize a coup/revolution (in his language) by the soldiers and they revolted against the officers in every military unit in North bengal cantts & in Dhaka. It was also exactly like recent BDR incident. KM was killed to remove that anticipated risk. Many officers were killed and captivated for several days.

Col (Retd) Taher was charged and tried by military court and hanged by Zia, although he wasn't subject to military law as a retired person. Later a clause was incorporated by the president's decree, empowering military courts to do that on certain grave offences.

The anti indian sentiments were triggered firstly due to india's poor role as a 'Neutral Middleman' in resolving different issues with Pakistan, starting with "Surrender Event". Secondly for their passive supportive role / negative due to their failure to stand as an honest friend in our problems like acute food shortage, to all basics of surviving in post war period. Then it had to follow the course to the advantage of anti awami politics tagging India with AL as an axxis of evil.

about India's role I would like to add a few points

a) USSR had all but withdrawn support to India about any further steps against pakistan post 1972 shimla agreement. this was due to the US pressure following the mid-east crisis that finally led to the 1973 arab-israeli war and the crushing defeat of USSR backed arab states, particularly egypt. India by itself was a political lightweight at the time and relied too much on soviet diplomatic support to be able to push through any cause by itself. moreover US (and hence UK) and china were strongly supporting pakistan, so any such exercise would have been futile anyway.

b) internally, India was probably as much in crisis and political upheaval as BD. these were the emergency years, without any doubt the most serious period of political crisis in independent India. no leader had time for anything else other than survival.

c) the 1973 war had started the infamous oil crisis increasing crude oil prices by 400% !! India, as a major importer of oil went nearly bankrupt in trying to pay for essential energy imports.

d) India anyway was in a very precarious situation food production wise. post 1947, India faced a massive food shortage (as the most productive areas of undivided India went to pakistan, in what is today BD and pakistani punjab) leading to a major famine in early 60's which was only barely mitigated with international food aid. throughout the 60's, the target was to achieve self-sufficiency in food production in order to avert another major famine ! exporting food was out of the question ! in short, it was really unreasonable to expect food aid from India in the 70's, when it itself produced barely enough food for its people.

e) lastly, the liberation war had ended with 8-10 million people on the Indian side, most of whom were destitutes. for a already poor country to arrange for the basic necessities of such a large number of people was a huge drain on resources.

I too have something to share: A lot of hindus were unjustly killed during the war without any valid excuse. some were driven away from Bangladesh to calcutta,others were persecuted.

i can't remember his name but this was under the command of a well known, respected leader...

Fantastic article Miraz bhai I am glad that it is not simply a polemic, as most articles on the war criminals are. The depth of research is very impressive considering you were probably still doing your PhD at the time?

Did you consider translating it to English and publishing it in one of the more serious magazines/journals in Bangladesh? Given the considerable legal content of your article, you could think about submitting it to the Law supplement of the Daily Star or to BILIA's (Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs) journal or even this new publication, South Asia Journal: southasiajournal.net

I have done some reading on this issue myself, largely to supplement my understanding of the current war crimes tribunal process. If you are able to find it in Bangladesh, I would also encourage you to read the contemporaneous textbook, "War Crimes and Genocide: The Trial of Pakistani War Criminals" by Dr. B.N. Mehrish (Oriental Publishers: 1972, Delhi). It was written by a young Indian academic soon after the end of the War and it grapples with the question - "Has the Government of Bangladesh a right in international law to try Pakistani prisoners of war surrendered to the Joint Command of the Indian forces and Mukti Bahini?" The author makes a strong case for the prosecution but, as your articles points out, realpolitik intervened and the legal process was scuppered.

In addition, as I am sure you're aware, the war crimes tribunal has been under heavy scrutiny in the West and has been subject to scathing attacks by legal commentators/international lawyers.

I've been trying to formulate a rebuttal to their allegations for a while now and for that purpose, I've been collecting transcripts of speeches/presentations they've made and articles that they've published. I would encourage people to read them, to see how the Tribunal is viewed abroad and some of the criticisms they face:

একাত্তরে পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনী নির্বিচারে গণহত্যা চালায়। কিন্তু নাদের আলী ছিলেন ব্যতিক্রমী এক পাকিস্তানি সেনা কর্মকর্তা, যিনি একাত্তরে বাংলাদেশে দায়িত্ব পালন করলেও বেসামরিক মানুষের ওপর অত্যাচার-নির্যাতনে শরিক হননি। এ ব্যাপারে তিনি ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্তৃপক্ষের আদেশও অমান্য করেছেন। নিরীহ বেসামরিক মানুষের ওপর পাকিস্তানি বাহিনীর অত্যাচারে এই সেনা কর্মকর্তা মানসিকভাবে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েন। ১৯৭৩ সালে তাঁকে প্রতিবন্ধী হিসেবে সেনাবাহিনী থেকে অবসর নিতে হয়। চলতি বছর ১৬ মার্চ ব্র্যাক ইউনিভারসিটি আয়োজিত সেমিনারে পঠিত নিবন্ধের সংক্ষিপ্ত ভাষান্তর এখানে প্রকাশ করা হলো।

১৯৬২ সালে আমি প্রথম তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে বদলি হয়ে আসি। ১৯৬২-৬৪ সালে আমি ঢাকা সেনানিবাসে এবং ১৯৬৫-৬৬ সালে ঠাকুরগাঁও ও চট্টগ্রামে তৃতীয় কমান্ডো ব্যাটালিয়নে কর্মরত ছিলাম। চাকরিজীবনে বেশ কিছু বাঙালি সেনা কর্মকর্তার সঙ্গে আমার পরিচয় হয়েছিল, যাঁরা পরবর্তীকালে বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে উল্লেখযোগ্য ভূমিকা রেখেছিলেন। জেনারেল জিয়াউর রহমানের সঙ্গে আমি পাকিস্তান মিলিটারি একাডেমিতে প্রশিক্ষক হিসেবে কর্মরত ছিলাম। ব্রিগেডিয়ার খালেদ মোশারফ মিলিটারি একাডেমিতে আমার সহপাঠী ও রুমমেট ছিলেন। একই সঙ্গে জেনারেল মীর শওকত আলী ছিলেন আমার সহপাঠী। কর্নেল আবু তাহের আমার সঙ্গে কমান্ডো প্রশিক্ষণ নিয়েছিলেন এবং সেই সুবাদে ছিলেন আমার অন্যতম বন্ধু। পাকিস্তান মিলিটারি একাডেমিতে থাকাকালে আমার অধীনে প্রশিক্ষণ গ্রহণকারী অনেক ক্যাডেট পরবর্তী সময়ে বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীতে অতি উচ্চ পদে আসীন হয়েছেন।
১৯৭১-এর দুঃখজনক ঘটনাপ্রবাহে যাওয়ার আগে আমার পূর্ববর্তী কিছু অভিজ্ঞতা বর্ণনা করতে চাই। ষাটের দশকের পুরো সময়টা ছিল বেসামরিক প্রশাসনের ওপর সেনাবাহিনীর আধিপত্য। ১৯৬৪ সালের রাষ্ট্রপতি নির্বাচনে জেনারেল আইয়ুব খান ও বিরোধীদলীয় নেতা মিস ফাতেমা জিন্নাহ প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করছিলেন, সে সময় আমি ঢাকা জেলার অন্তর্গত মানিকগঞ্জ মহকুমায় নির্বাচনী দায়িত্ব পালন করেছিলাম। তখন আমি দেখেছি কীভাবে আমলাতন্ত্রকে নির্বাচনে অপব্যবহার করা হয়েছিল। একই ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি আমি দেখেছিলাম কিছুদিন পর নারায়ণগঞ্জে, যখন আমাকে সামপ্রদায়িক দাঙ্গা প্রতিরোধে সহায়তা করার জন্য পাঠানো হয়। তখন আমি প্রত্যক্ষ করেছি যে তৎকালীন জিওসি মেজর জেনারেল ইয়াহিয়া খান তৎকালীন গভর্নর মুনায়েম খানকে তুচ্ছ-তাচ্ছিল্য করতেন। সেনাবাহিনী কাগজ-কলমে পুলিশ প্রশাসন ও ম্যাজিস্ট্রেটের সহযোগী হলেও বাস্তবে বেসামরিক প্রশাসন সেনাবাহিনীর অধীনে পরিচালিত হতো।
১৯৭০ সালের নির্বাচনের প্রাক্কালে ছয় দফা দাবি ও প্রাদেশিক স্বায়ত্তশাসনের পক্ষে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে বিরাট জনমত গড়ে উঠেছিল। নির্বাচনে শেখ মুজিবের নেতৃত্বে আওয়ামী লীগ প্রায় একচ্ছত্র প্রভাব বিস্তার করে। আমরা সবাই নির্বাচনের ফলাফলের জন্য উৎকণ্ঠা ভরে অপেক্ষা করছিলাম। যখন ফলাফল প্রকাশ হলো তখন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানি সেনা কর্মকর্তারা ছিলেন আনন্দে উচ্ছ্বসিত, আর আমরা পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানিরা ছিলাম অখুশি ও চিন্তিত। তারপর এ নির্বাচনের ফলাফলকে মেনে নিতে অনীহা, পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে সামরিক অভিযান এবং সবশেষে স্বাধীনতার যুদ্ধ। এই যুদ্ধ আমাদের সবার জীবনকে গভীরভাবে স্পর্শ করে গেছে এবং যাঁরা পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে বসবাস করতেন, তাঁদের শারীরিক ও মানসিকভাবে বিরাট মূল্য দিতে হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের জনসাধারণ সেনাবাহিনীর হাতে অমানবিক অত্যাচারের শিকার হয়েছিল, মৃত্যু ছিল তাঁদের নিত্য সঙ্গী, জীবন-মান বা সহায়-সমপত্তি কোনোটাই নিরাপদ ছিল না। দুর্ভাগ্যজনকভাবে আমি ছিলাম এসব ঘটনার একজন প্রত্যক্ষ সাক্ষী, যদিও আমি নিজে কাউকে হত্যা করিনি বা হত্যা করার আদেশ দিইনি। আমি অনেক কিছু দেখেছি ও শুনেছি, কিন্তু আমি এও জানি যে একজনের অভিজ্ঞতা তো আর ইতিহাস হতে পারে না।
আমি ১০ এপ্রিল ১৯৭১ তারিখে ৩ নম্বর কমান্ডো ব্যাটালিয়নের সহ-অধিনায়ক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করি| ৬ জুন অধিনায়ক হিসেবে নিয়োগপ্রাপ্ত হই এবং ১৯৭১ সালের অক্টোবর পর্যন্ত আমি এই পদে ছিলাম। এই ব্যাটালিয়নের একটি অংশ ২৫ মার্চ রাতে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে তাঁর বাসগৃহ থেকে গ্রেপ্তার করে। এই ঘটনার দুই সপ্তাহ পরে আমি কমান্ডো ইউনিটের দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করি। আমি ইস্টার্ন কমান্ড হেডকোয়ার্টারের সরাসরি অধীনস্ত ছিলাম এবং এই সুবাদে পূর্বাঞ্চলের অধিনায়ক জেনারেল নিয়াজির সঙ্গে আমার খুবই ঘনিষ্ঠ সম্পর্ক গড়ে ওঠে। একই সময় ১৪শ ডিভিশনের ওই সময়কার জিওসি মেজর জেনারেল রহিম, মেজর জেনারেল কাজী এবং মেজর জেনারেল মিত্থা, যিনি জেনারেল নিয়াজির দায়িত্ব গ্রহণের আগে জেনারেল টিক্কার সহযোগী ছিলেন, তাঁদের সঙ্গে আমার ঘনিষ্ঠ যোগাযোগ ছিল।
ঘটনার শুরুতেই বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে বন্দী করা হয়। কর্নেল জহির আলম, যাঁকে দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছিল বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে গ্রেপ্তার করার জন্য, তিনি বঙ্গবন্ধুকে স্যালুট করে বললেন যে স্যার, ‘আপনাকে গ্রেপ্তার করার জন্য আদেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।’ কর্নেল জহির আলম তাঁর বইয়ে লিখেছেন, যখন তিনি গ্রেপ্তারের খবরটি নিয়ে পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় সেনাসদরে আসেন, তখন সেখানে উপস্থিত তিনজন জেনারেল: সেনাবাহিনীর প্রধান জেনারেল হামিদ, পূর্বাঞ্চলের কমান্ডার জেনারেল টিক্কা এবং জেনারেল মিত্থা—সবাই তাঁকে কেবল একটি প্রশ্নই করেন, ‘তুমি ওকে গুলি করে মেরে ফেললে না কেন?’
১৯৭১ সালের ১১ এপ্রিল যখন আমি রংপুর পৌঁছালাম তখন ওখানকার ট্যাঙ্ক ইউনিটের অধিনায়ক খুব গর্ব করে বলছিলেন কীভাবে তিনি দুষ্কৃতকারী, অপকর্মকারী, রাজনৈতিক সদস্যদের লাইনে দাঁড় করিয়েছেন। তিনি বললেন যে তাঁদের মধ্যে বেশকিছু শিক্ষকও ছিলেন। তিনি তাঁদের নিকটবর্তী একটি ইটের ভাটায় নিয়ে যান এবং গুলি করে হত্যা করেন। যখন আমি জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম, ‘এই লোকগুলো কি কখনো কোনো বাধা দিয়েছিল বা অস্ত্রের ব্যবহার করেছিল?’ তখন তিনি বললেন, ‘নাদের, তুমি যদি তাদের দেখতে কীভাবে তারা আমাদের সঙ্গে ইতিপূর্বে ব্যবহার করেছে। তারা আমাদের দেখলেই চিৎকার করে কটু কথা বলত। এ ধরনের কৃতকর্মের জন্য মৃত্যুদণ্ডাদেশই তাদের প্রাপ্য।’ তারপর তিনি আরও বললেন, ‘আমাদের একজন বাঙালি কর্মকর্তাও খুব প্রতিবাদ করছিল, আমি তাকেও গুলি করে মেরেছি।’ আমি তখন প্রতিবাদের সুরে বললাম, ‘সে তো তোমার সঙ্গী কর্মকর্তা ছিল; হয়তো একটু বেশি আত্মসম্মান বোধ ছিল, এই যা।’ একজন সহযোগী কর্মকর্তার যদি এই পরিণতি হয়, তাহলে সাধারণ জনগণের কী অবস্থা হয়েছিল তা সহজেই অনুমেয়।
আমার প্রথম তথাকথিত অভিযান ছিল ১৫ এপ্রিল ১৯৭১। ১৪ এপ্রিল সকাল থেকে পর্যবেক্ষণ ও তথ্যানুসন্ধানের পরে, আমি ১৫ এপ্রিল দুটি হেলিকপ্টারে করে কমান্ডো সেনাদের নিয়ে ফরিদপুর শহরের পূর্ব দিকে অবতরণ করি। আমাকে বলা হচ্ছিল, ‘এই এলাকাটা খুবই বিপজ্জনক। শেখ মুজিবের বাড়ি এই জেলায় অবস্থিত। যাও এবং তাদের দেখিয়ে দাও, বিশেষ করে হিন্দুদের খুঁজে বের কর।’ যিনি এই আদেশটি করলেন তিনি আমার সাবেক প্রশিক্ষক ও বন্ধুও বটে। আমি বললাম, ‘স্যার, যে অস্ত্রধারী নয় এবং আমাকে গুলি করেনি, তাকে আমি হত্যা করতে পারব না। আমাকে এটা করতে বলবেন না, এমনকি সামরিক আইনের অধীনেও এটা বেআইনি।’ তিনি বললেন, ‘তুমি তো সদ্য পশ্চিম পাকিস্তান থেকে এসেছ, বাঙালি ক্যাডেটদের প্রশিক্ষণ দিচ্ছিলে এবং বাঙালি বন্ধুবান্ধবদের সঙ্গে মেলামেশা করছিলে, তুমি জানো না এখানে কী ঘটেছিল।’
শেষ পর্যন্ত আমি যখন ফরিদপুর শহরের পূর্বদিকে ফরিদপুর-পাবনা রোডে অবতরণ করলাম তখন কিছু ফাঁকা গুলি করে নিজেদের অবস্থানকে মজবুত করলাম। আমরা সড়কের ওপর যখন দাঁড়িয়ে আছি, তখন দেখলাম বেশ কিছু লোকজন আমাদের দিকে ছুটে আসছে। বালতি হাতে নিয়ে একটি লোক আসছিল। আমি জিজ্ঞেস করলাম, ‘তোমরা কী চাও?’ তখন সে বলল, আমরা আপনাদের জন্য খাওয়ার পানি নিয়ে এসেছি। আমি তখন সবাইকে গোলাগুলি বন্ধ করতে বললাম এবং একটা ব্রিজের পাশে বিশ্রাম নিতে লাগলাম। আমি ওই লোকটাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম, ‘কালকে তো আকাশ থেকে আমি আওয়ামী লীগের পতাকা উড়তে দেখছি।’ সে বলল, ‘স্যার, সেগুলো নামিয়ে ফেলেছি, আমরা এখন পাকিস্তানি পতাকা উড়াচ্ছি। এখান থেকে তারই একটি দেখতে পাচ্ছেন।’ ইতিমধ্যে দালালির কিছু উদাহরণ আমার নজরে এল। গ্রামবাসী টেনেহিঁচড়ে এক বেচারাকে ধরে নিয়ে এল। ‘স্যার, এই লোকটি আওয়ামী লীগের, সে গ্রামবাসীর কাছ থেকে চাঁদা ওঠাচ্ছিল।’ আমি তার পকেট হাতিয়ে ৩০ টাকার মতো পেলাম। আমি টাকাগুলো গ্রামবাসীকে দিয়ে দিলাম। আমারই এক সৈনিক প্রশ্ন করল, ‘স্যার, একে কি মেরে ফেলব?’ আমি বললাম, ‘তোমরা যদি কেউ অস্ত্র ধরেছ তো আমি তোমাদের গুলি করব।’ কিন্তু গ্রামবাসী চাচ্ছিল এই বিদ্রোহীকে শেষ করে দিতে, যাতে তারা আমাদের প্রিয় হতে পারে। কিছুক্ষণের মধ্যে ফরিদপুর শহরের দিকে সেনাবাহিনীর মূল অংশটি এগিয়ে এল। তারা রাস্তার দুই দিকের গ্রামগুলোতে আগুন জ্বালিয়ে আসছিল। একজন কর্নেল, যিনি মেশিনগান সজ্জিত একটি জিপে বসেছিলেন, আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘তোমার স্কোর কত?’ আমি বললাম, ‘আমরা এখনো কোনো প্রতিরোধের মুখোমুখি হয়নি, তাই কাউকে হত্যা করতে হয়নি।’ তিনি তখন তাঁর মেশিনগানটি ওই গ্রামবাসীর দিকে তাক করে গুলিবর্ষণ শুরু করলেন। মুহূর্তের মধ্যে তারা মৃত্যুর কোলে ঢলে পড়ল।
এর পরের অপারেশন হয়েছিল ২৫ এপ্রিল বরিশাল শহরকে মুক্ত করার জন্য। বরিশাল সর্বশেষ শহর ছিল, যা সেনাবাহিনীর নিয়ন্ত্রণের বাইরে ছিল। আমি এলাকাটি খুব ভালোভাবে চিনতাম। তাই যে ব্যাটালিয়নটি বরিশাল আক্রমণের জন্য পাঠানো হয়েছিল, তার গাইড হিসেবে আমি সঙ্গে গেলাম। অগ্রবর্তী দল হিসেবে ৩০ জনের একটি বাহিনী নেভির গানবোটে করে ২৪ এপ্রিল শহরে ঢুকে গেয়েছিল কিন্তু তাঁদের সঙ্গে কোনো যোগাযোগ হচ্ছিল না। কর্নেল ২৫ এপ্রিল রাত শহরের বাইরে কাটালেন এবং ভোরবেলা বিমানবাহিনীর ফাইটার ডেকে আনা হলো শহরে কিছু বোমাবর্ষণের জন্য। পরে আমরা বরিশাল শহরে ঢুকে দেখলাম ৩০ জনের অগ্রবর্তী দল, যাদের আমরা ভেবেছিলাম হারিয়ে ফেলেছি, তারাই শহরটি দখল করে নিয়েছে।
আমি বুঝতে পারছিলাম যে অধিনায়ক হিসেবে আমার দায়িত্ব পালন কত কঠিন হবে। আমার অধীনে সৈনিকদের নিয়ে সীমান্তের ওপারে অভিযান পরিচালনার জন্য স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগ্রহ করতে নির্দেশ দেওয়া হলো। জামায়াতে ইসলামী আমাকে এই স্বেচ্ছাসেবক প্রদান করত। প্রফেসর গোলাম আযম ও চৌধুরী রহমত ইলাহী প্রায়ই আমার অফিসে আসতেন। ফজলুল কাদের চৌধুরী ও মৌলভী ফরিদ আহমেদের সঙ্গে আমার ঘন ঘন দেখা হতো। আমি কোনো হত্যাকাণ্ডে জড়িত হইনি অথবা এ ধরনের কোনো আদেশ দিইনি, কিন্তু আমি জানতাম ঢাকার আশপাশে সেনাবাহিনী অনেক হত্যা ও লুটতরাজ করেছে। এই সময় ঢাকার সমাজ-জীবনে একটা ছদ্ম স্বাভাবিকতা বিরাজ করত। ঢাকা ক্লাব, অফিসার্স মেস, ধানমন্ডি ও সেনানিবাস নিয়ে ছিল আমাদের সেনাজীবন। ইতিমধ্যে প্রায় এক কোটি শরণার্থী ভারতে আশ্রয় নিয়েছিল, যার শতকরা ৯০ ভাগ ছিল হিন্দু। মৃত্যুর সংখ্যা হয়তো এখানে বাড়িয়ে বলা হচ্ছে কিন্তু প্রতিটি নাগরিকই তার জীবন নিয়ে ছিল ভীত ও সন্ত্রস্ত। আপন গৃহেও কেউ নিরাপদ বোধ করছিল না।
সেপ্টেম্বরের শেষের দিকে কর্নেল পদে প্রমোশনের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আমাকে পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য আদেশ দেওয়া হলো। আমি যেন এক অলীক জগৎ থেকে বাস্তবে ফিরে এলাম। ঢাকার উচ্চবিত্ত মান্যবররা এক সন্ধ্যায় আমাকে বিদায় সংবর্ধনা জানালেন। জেনারেল নিয়াজি আমাকে তাঁর সরকারি বাসগৃহে বিদায়ভোজে আপ্যায়িত করলেন এবং সমস্ত সন্ধ্যা তাঁর চিরাচরিত অভ্যাস অনুযায়ী কুৎসিত কৌতুক বলে চললেন। পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানে ফিরে আসার পর আমি মানসিকভাবে সম্পূর্ণরূপে ভেঙে পড়লাম এবং বাস্তবজীবনের সঙ্গে আমার কোনো যোগাযোগ ছিল না। আমি হাসপাতালে ছয় মাস ভর্তি ছিলাম এবং সিজোফ্রেনিয়া রোগে আক্রান্ত হয়ে অনেক স্মৃতি ভুলে গিয়েছিলাম। ১৯৭৩ সালে একজন প্রতিবন্ধী হিসেবে আমাকে অবসরে পাঠিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।
বিগত চার দশকে আমি নিজেকে পুনরায় আবিষ্কার করেছি এবং পাঞ্জাবি কবি হিসেবে আমি নিজেকে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেছি। বাংলাদেশে অবস্থানকালে যে সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতির সন্ধান আমি পেয়েছিলাম, আশা করছি পাঞ্জাবের সাহিত্যে সেই সংস্কৃতির একটি মেলবন্ধন ঘটাতে পারব। একজন পাঞ্জাবি কবি ও লেখক হিসেবে ১৯৭১-এ যাঁরা ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছেন, তাঁদের কাছ থেকে আমি মাফ চেয়ে নিচ্ছি। আমি বলতে চাই, আমার মতো পাঞ্জাবে আরও অনেকে আছেন, যাঁরা একই লজ্জায় লজ্জিত, একই ব্যথায় ব্যথিত।
আজকের পৃথিবী দ্রুত বদলে যাচ্ছে। আমি আশা করি যে দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার দেশগুলো সমপ্রীতির দৃঢ়বন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হবে। আসুন, আমরা আমাদের কোটি কোটি গরিব মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়াই এবং যেসব রাজনৈতিক ব্যক্তিত্ব আমাদের ভুল পথে পরিচালিত করেন, তাঁদের পরিহার করি। আসুন, আমরা একে অপরকে ধ্বংস করার মানসে সামরিক শক্তি বৃদ্ধি না করে একে অপরকে বন্ধু হিসেবে গ্রহণ করি এবং ক্ষুধা ও দারিদ্র্যকে জয় করি। শেষ করছি কবি ফয়েজ আহমেদ ফয়েজের কবিতা দিয়ে:
‘কব নজর মেঁ আয়েগি সবজকি বাহার, খুঁন কে দাঁগে ধুলায়ে তো কিতনা বারসাতোঁ কে বাদ, হামকো কাহতে তেরে আজনাবি ইতনি মুলাকাত কে বাদ।’
‘কখন দেখব সবুজ বসন্ত এসেছে বয়ে, কত বর্ষা লাগবে রক্তের দাগ মুছে যেতে, এতবার দেখা হওয়ার পরেও আমরা রয়ে গেলাম অপরিচিত।’
