Mridul: We, the liberated members are too afraid to be marked as Islamist these days. Hence, the lack of responses, I think. You know, in Bangladesh, to be an intellectual, you have to do the following:

1. Distance yourself from Islam

2. Have a special place in your heart for India and Pan-Indianism.

3. Support activities that are culturally far away from Islam.

4. Be very careful not to show any affinity, sympathy, curiosity, objectivity, passing interest in any Islamic matters.

If you don't follow any of the above, your'e doomed as a moderate.

I'm just trying to stir up controversy here. May be some others will join in, so, you'll have more responses here.

Hassan Rasool is a talented and gifted young man. Wonderful voice. Thanks for sharing it.

I don't know what the title post is about, but this is in response to Billah's remarks.

I think intellectuals in general all around the world reject any kind of religion. Not Islam in particular. In the USA, intellectuals are denounced by Christian fundas as Godless liberals. Historically, after a certain intellectual maturity, overhwhelmingly almost ALL intellectuals/thinkers/philosophers choose to abandon organized reliigon. Maybe there is something to it. I call it the inevitable result of rational thinking.

American liberals usually do Billah's 1,3 and 4 quite regularly, except that in this case the religion is Chrstianity. And instead of Pan-indianism, they are usually chastised to follow Godless socialism/communism/anti-Americanism/whatever fad word in vogue.

If there is no compulsion in religion why gripe about someone moving away?? It is individual choice. If someone doesn't like present-day-Islam and decides to abandon, its up to that person. The rule is supposed to be 'there is no compulsion in religion'. Or is that just an empty promise?

Well. I am guessing "militant" intellectuals like Malcolm X need the basis of an ideological dogma to fuel them all the time. Malcom found his own in the faith of Islam.

Needless to say, I am not necessarily overwhelmingly fond of faith-based stuff.

There is only one true faith and one true belief

1. Faith in one's own intellectual prowess
2. Belief that most people are inherently dumb

That's a little extreme for even me. I actually practice 1, but am constantly checking its validity. Valid, constantly checked faiths are wonderful things.
