Default how do i do paragraphs in html?

i have decided to publish a few older articles in a web blog. however, my knowledge of html is not the most accomplished. i am using dreamweaver which i am proficient at. i know how to do paragrahs but can't seem to work out how to leave that gap on the first line of a paragraphs.

here is what i want to achieve

[space] 'the cat is sat on the mat. the mat is brown. the mat is slug infested. the slugs are invisible. the slugs are vicious fundamentalists.'

this is what it is turning into

'the cat is sat on the mat. the mat is brown. the mat is slug infested. the slugs are invisible. the slugs are vicious fundamentalists.'

is it possible at all to do what i am trying to do? a little scan through the web on a few online newspapers suggested that the paragraph norm seems to be to leave a gap between two and this indicates there are seperate paragraphs. any help would be much appreciated
