No idea...
Personally, I didn't really care for AC1... I thought it was kind of boring (repetitive tasks and kind of easy).
This one I bought purely 'cause I was bored. It's definitely an improvement over the previous one as far as gameplay is concerned. But, it seems to be just as easy as AC1... if not easier. The game definitely gets you hooked (you feel compelled to finish the storyline). Lots of collectibles/secrets all over the place. One of the best things was the addition of Prince of Persia / Tomb Raider style "secret chambers" that really test your platforming skills (although I hated the "advanced wall jump" move... it's extremely difficult to pull off consistently).
If you liked the first game, you would definitely like this one.
If you are like me and thought the first game was "meh", then you might still like this one. I thought it was definitely way more worth my time than the first one.

An old man in business attire sat next to me on the train today and pulled out his laptop. I thought he was gonna open up a spredsheet or something but instead started playing solitaire. Poor sod.

I haven't. I tend to avoid movie tie-ins as they have the tendency to suck. The Metacritic score suggests it's not as bad as most games of its type, so if you can pick it up for dirt cheap then by all means, do. I'd personally recommend picking up The Warriors on PS2/PSP (if you have one), based on the cult-classic of the same name. It's the best movie based game I've played to date (besides Lego Star Wars). I now have a PS3 slim (120GB) and uncharted 1+2. Seems like the packaging is just as cheap as the 360 elite... no HDMI cable... have to disconnect my 360 till I get another one.
Oh... all fanboys (360 and PS3) can suck my need not reply to this.
