DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza needs surgery on both knees and is expected to have an operation on Monday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said on Saturday.
Mortaza visited Australian orthopaedic surgeon David Young in Melbourne on Friday and was advised to have arthroscopic surgery on his knees, the BCB said in a statement.
"The surgery is likely to be performed on Monday after which an assessment will be made on the extent of the injury and the possible duration for recovery," it added.
Mortaza fell awkwardly while bowling on the third day of the first test against West Indies at St Vincent last month, limped off the field and has been sidelined since.
Shakib Al Hasan replaced him as Bangladesh captain to complete a clean sweep victory in the test and one-day series against West Indies.
Shakib will again lead the side in Zimbabwe for a five-match one-day series beginning at Bulawayo on Sunday.
Mortaza has already had four knee operations by the same surgeon who has treated several of the world's leading players including Muttiah Muralitharan and Shoaib Akhtar.

Arthroscopy (also called arthroscopic surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Arthroscopic procedures can be performed either to evaluate or to treat many orthopaedic conditions including torn floating cartilage, torn surface cartilage, ACL reconstruction, and trimming damaged cartilage.

Arthroscopy is used for joints of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, foot, and hip.

This just doesn't make sense. How can the recovery period last 8 months when the procedure is Arthroscopic Surgery? It is one of the least invasive of all knee surgeries, as it avoids opening the whole knee area up. Usually, two small incisions are made in the damaged area to insert an Arthroscope to clean up minor damages ( fluids, loose cartilages etc ). It is a small scale procedure compared to major operations involving MCL, ACL etc. A month should be enough to recover provided the rehab is extensive. 8 months means its not a simple Arthroscopic procedure. Kinda confused..

dont think so Arthroscopy is minor surgery, it doesnt open up the knee

I don't understand why they are saying he's going to be out for 8-10 months..on cricinfo they are saying that once the surgery is done then they will give a time frame of when he can come back..so lets wait and see

right on. his going to have a problem coming back to international cricket after an injury like any other player. so he will have it tough.

It is both knees, the best thing, my nephew had the same op, recovery period was 3 months, he is back to playing soccer. He did not have a team physio and trainer, so Mash is at a better advantage. By the end of the year, he will be bowling.

I am pretty sure he did not get all that money for one game, maybe it was a contract for 3 yrs.

According to his contract- $ 600 k is for one season
for 1 match=600k/ total match the team playes in a season (availabilty of the player)

But he only gets 80% of the match fees in a match where the players is available but was not selected forthe match,

since he played only one game he should get:

(($600 k/ 14)*13) * 80% +($600k/14)

N.B: dont know about the taxes
