Inshallah we will win guys.

Requiring another 348 runs to win with eight wickets in hand, Bangladesh need to bat out, weather permitting, six hours for a draw. However, captain Shakib Al Hasan has said they will go for the win. "We are looking to bat all day and we are looking to win," he said.

It might sound over-ambitious, but thinking about winning might help the hosts at least save the Test. At times, batting for a draw can be as difficult, if not more, as trying to win. Whether some of the batsmen have the technical nous and the mindset to save a Test is unsure, and as the cliché goes, playing "positively" might be a better option.

It's something that opener Tamim Iqbal displayed amply, with dollops of common sense. He drove and cut at every opportunity and importantly, left a few deliveries outside off stump. Only once did he have a big swing but even then it wasn't a wild, mindless, shot. He had seen the slower one from Sreesanth but ended up swinging inside the line.

If Tamim stood for everything that was good about the Bangladeshi batting today, Shariar Nafees reflected the worst. It was a nervy innings, full of over-ambitious swipes and there was a sense of desperation and a sense of impending doom to it.

There was a man at the deep and he still went for the hook. It would have made sense if he was pulling well, but he wasn't. He chased deliveries outside off stump and went hard at some of his other shots.

It was his comeback game after his ICL exile and perhaps, the pressure showed on him. It was similar to the way he played in the first innings, and Shakib acknowledged it in the end. "He was very shaky in the middle but we are hoping that he scores runs and gains confidence. It's his comeback from ICL and he is working hard with Jamie Siddons [the coach]."

They might find some inspiration in Gautam Gambhir's thoughts though. "The pitch is very flat. If they [Bangladesh] play positively anything is possible. Let's see what happens."

Thats exactly what he has to say. If he says we will try to draw , that sends a negative message to the entire team. My take on this situation : Be a bit circumspect in the initial five-ten overs in the morning, then play positively starting with these two on the crease. There will not be a draw. Its almost impossible for us ( and for many teams ) to play out 85 overs or so on 5th day willing to draw the match. Either India wins or we make history. In order to sniff any possibility of a victory, first we need Tamim-Ash to build a hundred run partnership. Thats what they must aspire to do first. Rest will follow based on what happens there.

350 more runs on a 5th day nah...waste some overs and play for a draw. our 4th innings highest was 413 against SRL other than that its all been sub 200 i think.

I agree. A result is the most likely outcome here. Generally, I'd say playing for a draw equates to a negative mindset, however, this is different because to be able to get a draw, we'll need to make sure we stay out there and at the same time not get ourselves trapped in a situation where we get too defensive and let the bowlers toy with us. But if we do avoid a situation like that, it is likely we will be scoring at a decent rate without the loss of too many wickets and that will get us the victory. So we're really going round and round in circles.

But of course, the odds are in favor of India. Very much.

Yeah I agree. I think we should take it easy to start off with, we should try and frustrate them then try to score runs. There's no point being too defensive because we'll get out anyway. So we should try and play for the win. If wickets tumble and we're struggling badly (as expected) then hopefully Mahmudullah and Rahim can play an innings like Collingwood and see us home for the draw.

Well the only reason there's even a very remote possibility of a close finish here is because the surface is flattening out as opposed to cracking open, which is not the norm, at least not with subcontinent pitches. Had this not been the case, we'd have been toast.

Actually, this is the norm for Bangladeshi wickets, at least for last 3-4 years.

Many other international grounds have shown the same tendency in recent years.

WE will make 180 maximum - all out and nothing more. Truth hurts but it is true for our sorry nation. Both Ash and TI will out in the first 5 overs tomorrow... then batting collapse. Saqib will resist and rest is just BD book work. Good thing was we lasted (!) til the fifth day and avoided innings defeat but wait Test two will be an innings defeat.. .I have the crystal ball right infront of me.. oh wait, you dnt need a crystal ball to predict Bangladesh.

আশরাফুল ও বাংলাদেশের জন্য শ্রীলঙ্কার বিপক্ষে ওই টেস্ট অনুপ্রেরণাদায়ী হতে পারে আরেকটা কারণেও। ওই টেস্টের দ্বিতীয় ইনিংসে বাংলাদেশের সামনে মাহেলা জয়াবর্ধনের দল ৫২১ রানের টার্গেট দিলেও আশরাফুলের দলের জন্য চাপ হয়ে ওঠেনি সেটি। আশরাফুলের সেঞ্চুরির সঙ্গে সাকিব আল হাসানের ৯৬ আর মুশফিকুর রহিমের ৬১ রানে বাংলাদেশ লড়েছিল আশা জাগিয়ে। ৪১৩ রানে অলআউট হয়ে টেস্টটা শেষ পর্যন্ত ১০৭ রানে হারলেও মিরপুরের সেই স্মৃতি প্রেরণা জোগাচ্ছে চট্টগ্রাম বিভাগীয় স্টেডিয়ামে, ‘ওই টেস্টে আমি সেঞ্চুরি করেছিলাম, সাকিব-মুশফিকুরও খুব ভালো খেলেছে। আমরা চতুর্থ ইনিংসে চার শর বেশি রান করে জয়ের সম্ভাবনা জাগিয়েছিলাম। সেই স্মৃতি তো অনুপ্রেরণা হবেই।’ সাকিব আল হাসান স্মৃতি-টৃতির চেয়ে সামনে যা দেখেন সেটাতেই বিশ্বাস করেন বেশি। কাল দিন শেষের সংবাদ সম্মেলনেও জানালেন, ‘কাল (আজ) যদি আমরা সারা দিন ব্যাট করতে পারি তাহলে ম্যাচ জিতব।’ আর ‘যদি’ বাদ দিয়ে সরাসরি তাঁর কাছে জানতে চান শেষ দিনে বাংলাদেশের লক্ষ্য কী, সাকিবের উত্তর, ‘আমরা জেতার জন্যই খেলব।’ সাকিব-আশরাফুলদের মতের সঙ্গে মিলে যাচ্ছে গৌতম গম্ভীরেরও মত। দিন শেষে ভারতের এই ওপেনারও বাংলাদেশকে দিয়ে গেলেন সাফল্য লাভের একটা মন্ত্র, ‘বাংলাদেশের ব্যাটসম্যানরা যদি শেষ দিনে পজিটিভ ব্যাটিং করে, এই টেস্টে তাদেরও ভালো সম্ভাবনা থাকবে।’

কঠিন স্বপ্নটাই দেখছে সাকিবের বাংলাদেশ

বীরেন্দর শেবাগের সঙ্গে এই প্রথম সরাসরি দ্বিমত করলেন কোনো ভারতীয় ব্যাটসম্যান। দিন শেষে হাসপাতালে যাওয়ার জন্য স্টেডিয়ামের বাইরে অপেক্ষমাণ গাঢ় নীল গাড়িটিতে ওঠার আগে বলে গেলেন, ‘খুবই ভালো বল করছে তোমাদের বোলাররা। আলাদা করে কারও নাম বলব না। সবাই ভালো করছে। সবার বলই কোনো না-কোনোভাবে সমস্যায় ফেলেছে আমাদের।’
শেবাগের সঙ্গে একটা লড়াইয়ে তাহলে জিতেই গেল বাংলাদেশ! খুব ‘অর্ডিনারি’ বোলিং হলে তো আর বিশ্বসেরা টেস্ট দলের কোনো ব্যাটসম্যান এমন কথা বলেন না। প্রথম ইনিংসে ভারতের ১০ উইকেট নেওয়ার পর দ্বিতীয় ইনিংসে ৮ উইকেট। শেবাগ কাল ইনিংস ঘোষণার ‘চালাকি’টা না করলে হয়তো বাকি দুটি উইকেটও তুলে নেওয়া যেত। কী আর করা! সেটা যখন হলোই না এখন শেষ লড়াইটাতেই জিততে চায় বাংলাদেশ। ব্যাটিং ছাড়ার আগে দ্বিতীয় ইনিংসে ৮ উইকেটে ৪১৩ রান করে ৪১৪ রানের লিড নিয়েছে ভারত। ওই রানের পাহাড় টপকানোই বাংলাদেশের জন্য শেষ লড়াই। বাংলাদেশ কি পারবে এতে জিততে? অধিনায়ক সাকিবসহ গোটা দলের আশা, পারবে।
তবে চট্টগ্রাম জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়ামে কাল যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে চতুর্থ দিনটা শেষ করল বাংলাদেশ, সেখান থেকে স্বপ্ন দেখা একটু কঠিনই। চা-বিরতির পর আর ২৮ মিনিট ব্যাট করে ইনিংস ঘোষণা করেছে ভারত। এরপর ১৮ ওভার ব্যাটিং করে দিন শেষে বাংলাদেশের স্কোর ২ উইকেটে ৬৭ রান। জেতার জন্য আজ শেষ দিনে বাংলাদেশকে করতে হবে ৩৪৮ রান, ভারতের চাই ৮ উইকেট। দিন শেষে কোনটা সহজ প্রমাণিত হয়, এখন সেটাই দেখার অপেক্ষা।
কাল বাংলাদেশের ব্যাটসম্যানদের তাড়াহুড়া দেখে অবশ্য মনে হচ্ছিল প্রথমটাই বুঝি বেশি সহজ। কোচ বাজে বলে মারার মন্ত্র জঁপে দিয়েছেন। ব্যাটসম্যানদের কাছে যেন জহির খান-শ্রীশান্তদের সব বলই বাজে মনে হচ্ছিল! ইমরুল কায়েস দলকে মাত্র ৮ রানে রেখে জহির খানের বলে কট বিহাইন্ড, শাহরিয়ার নাফীস দুবার ‘জীবন’ ফিরে করতে পারলেন ২১ রান। ব্যক্তিগত ৫ ও ১৫ রানে জহির খানের বলে স্লিপে তাঁর ক্যাচ ফেলেছেন ভিভিএস লক্ষ্মণ। পরেরবার তো ক্যাচ নিতে গিয়ে ফাটিয়ে ফেলেছেন হাতই। ম্যাচ শেষে ওই হাতে সেলাই দিতেই হাসপাতালে যেতে হয়েছে তাঁকে।
ভারতের জন্য লক্ষ্মণের ইনজুরি হয়তো একটা দুঃসংবাদ, তবে বাংলাদেশের জন্য ৪৭ রানের মধ্যে ২ উইকেট হারানোও কম দুঃসংবাদ নয়। শেষ দিনে ওই দুঃসময় কাটিয়ে বাংলাদেশ কতটা এগিয়ে যেতে পারে সেটা অনেকখানিই নির্ভর করছে উইকেটে থাকা দুই অপরাজিত ব্যাটসম্যান তামিম ইকবাল ও মোহাম্মদ আশরাফুলের ওপর।
মুখে বাংলাদেশের বোলারদের যতটা সাধারণ মানে নামিয়ে আনতে চেয়েছিলেন ভারতের ভারপ্রাপ্ত অধিনায়ক, কাজে-কর্মে তাঁরা সেটা কমই পারলেন। ওপেনার গৌতম গম্ভীর টানা ১০ টেস্টে পঞ্চাশের বেশি রানের ইনিংস খেলার সঙ্গে টানা পঞ্চম টেস্টে পেলেন সেঞ্চুরি। আগের দিন নাইটওয়াচম্যান হিসেবে উইকেটে নামা অমিত মিশ্রর প্রথম টেস্ট ফিফটি কিংবা লক্ষ্মণের অপরাজিত ৬৯ রান আর যা-ই হোক ‘অর্ডিনারি’ বোলিংয়ের বিপক্ষে বিশ্বসেরা ব্যাটিংয়ের সর্বোচ্চ সামর্থ্য প্রমাণের জন্য যথেষ্ট নয়। দলের পক্ষে সর্বোচ্চ জুটি বলতে দ্বিতীয় উইকেটে গম্ভীর-মিশ্রর ৯৮ রান। জুটিটা গড়ে উঠল বাংলাদেশি ফিল্ডারদের হাত ফসকে এই দুই ব্যাটসম্যানেরই ক্যাচ পড়ার পর। ব্যক্তিগত ৫৫ রানে শর্ট লেগে সাকিবের বলে গম্ভীরের ক্যাচ ফেলেছেন ইমরুল। আর মিশ্র নিজের ৪১ রানের সময় সাকিবের বলেই বেঁচে গেছেন স্লিপে দাঁড়ানো শাহরিয়ারের হাত ফসকে। মিশ্র নতুন জীবন কাজে লাগাতে না পারলেও কাজটা ভালোভাবেই করেছেন গম্ভীর। ১১৮ বলে ক্যারিয়ারের নবম টেস্ট সেঞ্চুরি পূর্ণ করেছেন সাকিবকে লং অন দিয়ে ছক্কা মেরে। দিন শেষে সাকিবকে ওই ছক্কার জন্য ধন্যবাদ দিতেই কি ভারতীয় ড্রেসিংরুমে তাঁকে ডেকে নিয়েছিলেন গম্ভীর?
টেস্ট ক্রিকেটে প্রথম উইকেটের আনন্দ এমনিতেই বেশি। সেই উইকেটটি একজন সেঞ্চুরিয়ানের বলেই আনন্দ আরও বেড়ে যাওয়ার কথা শফিউলের। ইনিংসের ৪৮তম ওভারে তাঁর বলেই কাট করতে গিয়ে ভারতের গম্ভীর থার্ডম্যানে ক্যাচ হয়েছেন শাহরিয়ারের। শফিউলের চেয়ে কম আনন্দ নয় বাংলাদেশের আরেক পেসার রুবেল হোসেনের। প্রথম ইনিংসের সেঞ্চুরিয়ান শচীন টেন্ডুলকারকে মাত্র ১৬ রানে ফিরিয়ে দিয়ে তীব্র উচ্ছ্বাসে মেতে ছিলেন তিনি।
কুয়াশায় ঢেকে যাওয়া আগের সময় পুষিয়ে নিতে আজ খেলা শুরু হওয়ার কথা সকাল ৯টায়। আলো নিয়ে সমস্যা না থাকলে খেলা চলবে বিকেল ৫টা পর্যন্ত। এই সময়ের মধ্যে জয়ের জন্য সর্বোচ্চ ৯৮ ওভার ব্যাট করার সুযোগ পাবে বাংলাদেশ দল। তবে সকালে যেমন ঘনঘটা থাকছে কুয়াশার, তাতে পুরো ৯৮ ওভার খেলা হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা কমই। জয়ের চেয়ে এই টেস্টে বাংলাদেশের কাছে ড্র-টাই বেশি সহজ হওয়ার কথা।

You are right and still BD lost that match. BD has made more than 200 runs many times in their second innings. Lets hope the boys do not cave in to pressure from India and bat with a steady and clear mind. Take it ball by ball, over by over, and fight to stay at the crease session by session.

If we can do it against Srilanka's bowling attacks, then why can't we do it against an average bowling attacks of Indian?
