US ambassador 'killed in Libya'

The US ambassador to Libya has died after being attacked by militiamen storming the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, reports say.
The ambassador was said to be among four US officials killed in a protest over a US-produced film that is said to insult the Prophet Muhammad.
The US state department has only confirmed the death of one official - but it has not named him.
Protesters over the film have also attacked the US embassy in Cairo.

US consulate torched over anti-Islam film
American killed in Libyan city of Benghazi and protests hit US embassy in Cairo over film deemed offensive to Muslims.
Last Modified: 12 Sep 2012 07:08

An American staff member of the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi has died following fierce clashes at the compound, Libyan security sources said.

An armed mob attacked and set fire to the building in a protest against an amateur film deemed offensive to Islam's Prophet Muhammad, after similar protests in Egypt's capital.

"One American staff member has died and a number have been injured in the clashes," Abdel-Monem Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya's Supreme Security Committee, said on Wednesday, adding that rocket-propelled grenades were fired at the building from a nearby farm.

"There are fierce clashes between the Libyan army and an armed militia outside the US consulate," he said. He also said roads had been closed off and security forces were surrounding the building.

Just hours earlier on Tuesday, thousands of Egyptian demonstrators apparently angry over the same film - a video produced by expatriate members of Egypt's Coptic community resident in the US - tore down the Stars and Stripes at the US embassy in Cairo and replaced it with a black Islamic flag.

The two incidents came on the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks in the US.

"Some have sought to justify this vicious behaviour as a response to inflammatory material posted on the internet," said a statement by Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, who also confirmed the death of the consulate employee.

"The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others," she said.

Suleiman El-Dressi, Al Jazeera's producer in Benghazi, said, "A group of people calling themselves the 'Islamic law supporters' heard the news that there will be an American movie insulting the Prophet."

"Once they heard this, they came out of their military garrison and went into the streets calling upon people to gather and go ahead to attack the American consulate in Benghazi.
Quote:
Reuters is reporting that four Americans were killed in the attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi, and that one was the U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens. The State Department has not confirmed or denied this latest report, according to France24 news. A Libyan official said the Stevens and the other three staff members were killed when someone fired rockets at them in their car, but other reports say he died from asphyxiation from smoke.

A a 14-minute trailer for the English-language film, which was posted on YouTube in July, attracted little attention until last week, when a version dubbed into Arabic was posted on the same YouTube channel and then copied and viewed tens of thousands of times more.

Although there was initial confusion about who made the film, The Wall Street Journal reported that the drama, titled “Innocence of Muslims,” was produced and directed by an Israeli-American, Sam Bacile, a California real-estate developer who called Islam “a cancer,” in an interview. Mr. Bacile told The Journal that he raised $5 million from about 100 Jewish donors and shot the two-hour movie in California last year.

Last week, an Egyptian-American Copt known for his broadsides against Muslims drew attention to the trailer in an Arabic-language blog post and an e-mail newsletter in English publicizing the latest publicity stunt of the Florida pastor Terry Jones, reviled in the Muslim world for burning copies of the Koran. Reached by telephone in Florida, a representative of Mr. Jones seemed unaware of the film, but hours later the pastor sent The Lede a statement by e-mail in which he complained of the attack on the embassy in Cairo and announced plans to screen the trailer for the film on Tuesday night. He said that it “reveals in a satirical fashion the life of Muhammad.”

The Coptic activist, Morris Sadek, did not respond to a request for an interview, but he is an ally of Mr. Jones and his blog post features a photograph of the two men at a tiny, anti-Islam protest outside the White House in June. Later, he told The Associated Press that he planned screenings of the film.

Nothing can justify the terrible killing of the US ambassador and his colleagues. Nothing could have been more counter-productive and better designed to give publicity to such Islamophobic material. This will only further harm the image of Muslims worldwide. This is a sad day for humanity.

This is absolutely disgraceful. How bad can things get for our religion? how could so many people love the prophet and yet not understand his message or the basics?

Because they know nothing about the Prophet or Islam. Only what mufti so and so tells them.

This is the same Prophet who showed concern for a lady who made it her daily business to cause him physical pain, yet his 'followers'(I refuse to say 'we' - they don't speak for me) deem it necessary to kill people because idiots seek to provoke them by drawing stupid images of him or fake spoof films about him.

The Prophet, the man in question thought it wasn't worth responding to their provocations, yet these people think they have to kill people to uphold his 'honor'

Oh and I blame the silent majority for this. Letting our faith be hijacked by these animals.

This is sad. There are always peaceful ways to protest. My condolences for the departed souls and their families.
...
They instigate, 'we' instantly react, they get yet another issue to highlight with negativity.

Why does this need to be protested? Where are the protests for pakistanis getting bombed in mosques while offering Jummah prayers?

Why can't Muslims simply ignore things...a movie made by a nobody, that 99% of the muslim world will never hear of, yet some leader decides this should be a fun thing to run with...especially with it being 9/11 and voila.

So, this movie gets the publicity it doesn't deserve...the average person once again sees muslims acting like animals, and worst of all, someone who had NOTHING to do with his is killed along with 3 other innocents.

Of course not bro. And nowhere in my post did I say that. I am talking about those who have made the movie containing things that certain people find insulting. (That being said, I have not seen the movie). And yes I agree with you too that this negativity is what we deserve if things fare out in this manner.

Very sad day. I was reading the biography of the diplomat and he was very qualified, fluent in Arabic and French and was a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English for 2+ years during the 80's. He was helping the Libyan people to a peaceful transition from Gaddafi's brutal rule to democracy. The person who was doing so much for Libyans is killed like this. Really, nothing to say here!!

OIC and individual Muslim countries should all condemn this attack. So should all Muslims.

Who are you guys calling Muslims? Those who are taking innocent lives? They can be anything but Muslims in my book. These people are evil, they have no religion. These are the people who are destroying Islam and giving Jihad a bad name.

I am pretty sure if you ask them what is the best form of Jihad, they won't be able to answer. These people never bother to open Quran with the intention to learn the true message from this powerful revelation but they are the ones doing all these evil deeds and claiming that they are doing it for the sake of Allah Azza Wajjal..

And I curse those individuals who play with these ignorant people's emotions and use them to accomplish their personal agenda what ever that may Be. And NO, by 'they' I don't mean USA or Israel or Christians. By "they" I mean those so called Muslim Munafeks who are using Islam to achieve their filthy ambition.

May Allah guide us and help us to understand that killing people or blowing up a building or airplane is not Islam. May Allah have mercy on us and give us the coolness of our eyes.

The wiki article doesn't dispute what I said. Not sure I ever said the Prophet was a pacifist and didn't deal with enemies in the time honored fashion of arabia.

All I meant was, He like all other Prophets faced a lot of hatred and they didnt feel it was necessary to respond to every provocation

Maybe you didn't say it. But I thought it was implied that he was a beacon of tolerance. I may be wrong.

"Time honored fashion" of Arabia ... interesting you say that. If Mohammed is someone we should follow in every aspect of life - that means his morality and actions should be timeless. The problem is ... many Muslims think it is. Which is why you get lynch mobs and violence every time a person, group, or ideology is painted as the "enemy of Islam."

Reading Dash's post really reaffirms my belief that all hope is lost in the world.

"Surely, mankind is at a great loss! Except for those who believe and do good, and persevere with truth and persevere with patience." How many Muslims even ponder on these few words anymore?

This is 'moderate' Bangladesh. Can't blame some uneducated village guy or a richshawpuller for these comments. These are urban, modern, aware people...

This is why we have to be vigilant, the intolerance in our national psyche is barely hidden and not far from boiling over.
