When 1st six can't do it, what would the 7th do?
We were very poor in batting. Use to rely on Jodi "laigga jai" batting. We use to discuss "shomman jonok porajoy" vs going out all gun blazing and fold under 180. Often team selection was criticized as why do we have 7 batsmen and not enough bowling options.
The entire SL-ENG series and today's SL batting against England proved 7th batsman can make a difference.
Tharanga's (opener now slotted at #7) 53 of 49 was the team highest and had the best strike rate.
Moin Ali's, Bairstow's partnerships in the test, time and again proved #7 is necessary.
Told you so!!! Hahaaha!!!!

If only we could retro back this SL_ENG to late 2000.

Wasn't the 7th batmen criticized in regards to our test team?

Correct. We use to always criticize the 7th batsman. This was the series where the 7th/8th wicket partnership was crucial for both sides.
So, contrary to the popular believe, 7th batsman pick can be helpful especially in English condition.

Batting to 7 is fine if it includes the keeper, batting to 8 is where it really starts to affect the bowling unless they are a genuine all rounder. What you need in tests is at least 4 test class bowlers plus at least one other who is more than handy.
