Default Earthquake

Is everything alright in BD ?

There was an earthquake here in the morning and we could feel the house shaking. There were tidal waves in the sea throughout the east coast and in sri lanka. But South East Asia seems to be very badly hit

Default Tidal Waves Kill 160 in Sri Lanka

1 minute ago World - AP Asia

By LELY T. DJUHARI, Associated Press Writer

JAKARTA, Indonesia - An extremely powerful earthquake rocked northern Indonesia Sunday, sparking massive tidal waves across the region — the apparent cause of 160 deaths in Sri Lanka. More than a dozen people were reported killed elsewhere, officials and witnesses said.

The U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites) said a magnitude-8.5 quake — one capable of massive damage — struck off the coast of the island of Sumatra at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Massive waves crashed into coastal villages over a wide area of Sri Lanka on Sunday, killing 160 people and displacing thousands of others, officials said.

The deaths occurred in the northeastern districts of Muttur and Trincomalee, which were inundated by waves as high as 20 feet, said D. Rodrigo, a Muttur district official.

No official immediately said what the cause of the waves were, but they occurred shortly after the earthquake in Indonesia.

Witnesses told Jakarta's el-Shinta radio station that nine people were killed in the northernmost province of Aceh, and several shops and small buildings had collapsed. But telephone and most communication links to the region were out and there was no immediate way to confirm the casualty and damage reports.

"The ground was shaking for a long time," resident Yayan Zamzani told the station. "It must be the strongest earthquake in the last 15 years."

Four people died in Thailand in the southern tourist resort of Phuket, said Sorat Susaeng of the Narenthorn Center of the Public Health Ministry. The center also reported that people were swept away in Phuket by a tsunami with waves surging as high as 16 feet.

Tremor not felt at Bangladesh today, may be some unusual tidal was in coastal area but not that much.

In Kolkata tremor was felt along with Andaman, Nicobar and mild quake hit Chennai. Seawater also entered in Chennai city due to tidal. Reports NDTV.

It struck India and Bangladesh, but the real damage was done to Indonesia... and the tidal wave in Sri Lanka.

Are you kidding? Magnitude 7.6 in Chittagong and no report of death of injury??
Thousands of people would be dead by now, if it's really Magnitude 7.6
Remember the earthquake in Japan caused more than 6000 lives in 1995 or 1996?
It was Magnitude 7.6,
I cant imagine how huge damage will be done if it really happens in Chittagong.

I hope no one was killed in Bangladesh. Our hearts go out to all the people killed elsewhere. My mom told me on the phone about tremors near Lalmatia in Dhaka?

The earth quake hit Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. It wrecked havoc in Sri-Lanka, India, and Indonesia. Thailand and Malaysia were also badly hit. By the grace of almighty Bangladesh escaped this diabolical earth quake just for being too far away from the epi-centre. Only minor tremors could be felt in parts of the country.

The Bangladesh government should send some aid ASAP to the heavily affected countries. It might just be a drop in the bucket, but it would nevertheless be a nice token of support.

Good idea. BAF can help with its C-130 hercules and MI-17 helos. We should stand by our neighbours with whatever we have.

I know nothing about geophysics etc, but how is it that Somalia and Kenya was affected but not BD which was much closer to the epicentre? We were very very lucky..

Yeah, this is very weird... I was also thinking that... only two deaths from Bangladesh even though it was closer to the quake then even India and Sri Lanka. There is reportedly hundreds of deaths in Somalia which is weird because it is so far off and there is countries way closer to the quake that were'nt effected.

This is a tragedy... the death toll is likely to double from disease and starvation to more then 100,000. Milions are displaced. This is the worst tragedy in a long, long time... yet there hasn't been much of coverage here in the US... they make such a big deal over 3,000 people dead in 9-11... they go on and attack a country for it... you'd expect them to donate billions of help this tragedy... I guess it doesn't concern them.
