US wants govt to act against corruption


The US government wants to see the next election free and fair and the present government take seriously the problem of corruption, said a source close to the American Embassy in Dhaka.

He made the remark while talking about the issues in Bangladesh in the light of the situation in Afghanistan. It is important that the government protects all its citizens, including minorities, from extremists, the source said.

“It is important to see Bangladesh is a more prospective country resolving its economic and trade problems,” the source said, requesting anonymity.

He said, “If you think about Afghanistan, it is clear that the people of Afghanistan, specially women and girls, suffered greatly under the Taliban regime—-we don’t know why anyone would want that for Bangladesh.”

i was actually referring to the gas reserves in bangladesh. the article you've posted, however, does give them an ideal excuse to lay hands on our gas, doesn't it?

Terrorism in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries on earth, on the brink of being a failed state, and that makes it a perfect target for Al-Qaeda and its ever-expanding network of Islamic extremist organisations. Virtually unnoticed by the world at large, Bangladesh is being dragged into the global war on terrorists by becoming a sanctuary for them.

US officials say they are "looking closely" at Bangladesh as Islamic organisations proliferate amid political violence that has flared since bitterly contested parliamentary elections in October 2001. These were won by a four-party coalition headed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). It includes three religious extremist parties, which are staunch supporters of Islamic fundamentalism.

Neighbouring India, which has had turbulent relations with Bangladesh since it gained independence from Pakistan in 1971, alleges that there are 195 camps in Bangladesh where guerrillas seeking autonomy or independent statehood in north-eastern India are being trained.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's government in Bangladesh has repeatedly denied it supports anti-Indian militants or allows Islamic organisations, some of them linked to Al-Qaeda, to flourish. Given the BNP's reliance on its Islamic partners, that position is to be expected. The US and its Western allies are gradually waking up to the potentially explosive situation developing in Bangladesh, which former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League, the main opposition party, calls the "Talibanisation" of Bangladeshi society.

But I wont worry about the US just yet. Iran looks like the next BIG target...US's primary concern is Israel's well-being for the moment.

What we should worry about is Bangladesh itself, and not necessarily the US. It seems people keep seeing everything through a deep hatred of the US, which is fine up to a point. But if you saw things through your love for your own country, Bangladesh, then perhaps you would feel a deep sense of sorrow at not having any role or voice whatsoever in changing what is happening there.

Bangalis are incredibly resilient people despite being meek, subservient and generally asleep most of the time. They kicked the British out in 47, the Pakistanis out in 71, and a dictator out in '91.

"Eta karo baaper bagan na", as the saying goes. Some people will find out soon enough what that really means.

Painful days are ahead for us for sure and certainly US has nothing to do with it but Bangladesh itself.
People who don't believe the rising of Islamic extremist in Bangladesh,
open or underground are simply blind.
People are becoming their target who rise their voices against them.
No matter who he is, politician, media, newspaper, columnist, writer, poet, scholar etc who
found as talking against so called Islamic interest. It seems AL are facing the hit now,
but it will be turn on BNP soon. Good people will leave politics and Mullahs and criminals
will be all around the power. I strongly blame BNP, AL, Ershad for groomed this situation.
They are heavily responsible not being wise and concerned after watching the situation
of other so called Islamic country ( Algeria, Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan etc. )
Rather they are taking politics and power as their family business or private property.

It so sad we are becoming the victim of disaster building by ourselves not US or others.

I don't understand why there is so much ruckus. Where's the terrorism in Bangladesh? They must be thinking all those people dying from natural disasters were killed in bombs or something. Ignorant Americans.

I don't think the US would ever go to the length of attacking Bangladesh. There is no reason at all to attack the country. Bangladesh rarely comes up in the Intl media, which means, there is no plans to take out Bangladesh yet. So there is no need for our Bengali brothers to worry! Right now, you guys should consider on building up your defence! Strong Bangladesh will keep your enemies away!

Btw, a suggestion, how about Bangladesh attacks the US before the US gets into BD ?
