Default Quotes that makes you think

Feel free to share your favorite quotes that inspires you, makes you laugh or makes you think.

Here is one for now.

"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." -- Carl Sagan

Edit:
Glad you guys liked the quote.Embedding a video of Carl Sagan giving this quote with more context.
(3:31 long)

"They (humans) give birth astride of a grave; the light gleams an instant, and then it is night once more." --- Samuel Beckett in Waiting for Godot

An excellent quote that captures the nature of the existential drama that is life.

That Sagan quote is phenomenal, by the way. Thanks for sharing.

From Good Will Hunting:

Quote:
Will: Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll take a shot. Say I'm working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, 'cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never met, never had no problem with, get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Oh, send in the Marines to secure the area" 'cause they don't give a ****. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number got called, 'cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some kid from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ***. And he comes back to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his *** got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile, he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And, of course, the oil companies used the skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them, but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. And they're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, of course, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and f---in' play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's got to walk to the f--in' job interviews, which sucks 'cause the shrapnel in his as- is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin', 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat, the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. I figure f--k it, while I'm at it why not just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president.

My favorite (makes me think...kotha kintu thik):

"Haat thakte mukhey ki?"

Another very useful one (one I can tell my elder brother...but doesn't make him think):

"Nera bell tolay ekbar e jaye...kintu tumi bar bar jao"

Finally, one of my most favorite (makes me think very hard...):

"Kutta'r lej gorom ghee diya tin maash ghoshleo shoja hoy na..."

Some of my favorites:

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." - Mohammad Ali
This quote just seems so inspirational to me.

"All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him."
- Sun Tzu, the Art of War
This is a great quote that shows great strategy and thinking. My former Literature teacher revealed this quote to me and since then I look up to this quote.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." -Gandhi
Good, inspirational quote. I like it because everyone in the world can contribute to this quote as it is not hard to do.

And finally last but not least. A fun, short quote to end this post. One that most of you know.
"Why so seruous?" -Joker

Two quotes that I am particularly partial to, the first for what it says about knowledge and understanding:
"We used to think that if we knew one, we knew two, because one and one are two. We are finding that we must learn a great deal more about and."
-- Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington

... and the second for what it says about dreams and dreamers:
"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their mind wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible."
-- T. E. Lawrence, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom

And the following are just a mix of comic witticisms and universal truths :

"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it."
-- George Bernard Shaw

"If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail."
-- Maslow

"People who claim they don't let little things bother them have never slept in a room with a single mosquito."
-- Anonymous

"While most people's opinion changes, the conviction of their correctness never does."
-- Anonymous

"Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before," Bokonon tells us. "He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way."
-- Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle

"War is God's way of teaching Americans geography."
-- Ambrose Bierce

"Democracy is the recurring suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time."
-- E. B. White

"The genius of you Americans is that you never make clear-cut stupid moves, only complicated stupid moves which make us wonder at the possibility that there may be something more to them we are missing."
-- Gamel Abdel Nasser

There are many things my father taught me here in this room. He taught me: keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

Michael Corleone, The Godfather Part II

Quote:
Universal truth is not measured in mass appeal.

and

I'm out with the black box, and I refuse to return, I spit reality instead of what you usually learn, and I refuse to be concerned with condescending advice, cuz I'm the only ______ who can change my life.

Immortal Technique, "Leaving the Past"

Quote:
...I know that societies often have killed people who have helped to change those societies. And if I can die having brought any light, having exposed any meaningful truth that will help destroy the racist cancer that is malignant in the body of America then, all of the credit is due to Allah. Only the mistakes have been mine.
