MPs quit Bangladesh ruling party

Two members of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party have resigned from their party and parliamentary positions.
The dissident MPs - Mahi Chowdhury and Abdul Mannan - say their resignation is a protest against the BNP's failure to run the country in a proper manner.

A BBC correspondent in Dhaka says that the resignation of Mr Chowdhury was predictable, given the fact that he is the son of former President Badruddoza Chowdhury.

The former president was one of the founders of the BNP but last year resigned from his position calling for a new political force to rival the two major parties.

But our correspondent says that there was real surprise over Mr Mannan's resignation.

A retired army major, he was believed to be a trusted member of the BNP ranks.

Both men have condemned the BNP for its "corruption, terrorism and nepotism as well as its failure to run the country".
